A genin from Sunagakure with a barely functional right arm, Kazuhito is known primarily for being terrible at taijutsu, conversation, and staying calm.

Background

Kazuhito has lived in Sunagakure for only about 3 years, since he was recruited from another village in the Land of Wind. Since that time, he has shown tremendous promise in Genjutsu, but is weak in Taijutsu and has accomplished little in the field.

Aida Kazuhito was born the son of a wandering mercenary by the name of Aida Gorou, a cruel and hard man who rarely saw his family outside of peroidically returning to provide money. He was carefully sheltered by his mother. When he was nine, his father returned to his mother, unable to find continuing mercenary work against the competition of the increasingly well-organized shinobi from the hidden villages, and seeking to settle down. However, Gorou had difficulty wherever they tried to settle, as he would often get drunk, start fights, and be politely (or not so politely) asked to leave town.

After the family was close to starving, Gorou finally stopped drinking and managed to live peacefully for a few months in a backwater village in the Land of Wind. Still, work was hard, and Gorou was desperate for a better life. An opportunity came when a team of Shinobi from Sunagakure visted the village, and the leader of the group noticed that Kazuhito had the ability to become a talented Shinobi. They invited Kazuhito to train at thier academy, an opportunity Gorou happily accepted if it meant the three of them could relocate to the village hidden in the sand.

Kazuhito was admitted into the academy at the age of 11. His social skills were weak and he had never spent much time with children his own age. Desperate to make friends, but unsure of how to do it, he accepted a dare from a handful of the other students to sneak out of the village and brave the desert. The young children successfully slipped past the guards, who were more vigilant about people getting in than out, but while outside the wall, he struggled to keep up with the other, faster students. Soon, he was being left behind. Too ashamed to call out and too ignored to be noticed, he soon realized he was lost in the desert. He begin to cry in panic, startling a nearby scorpion into stinging him on his right arm.

He was found only hours later, but the damage had been done. Half-dead from dehydration and poison, he spent days in the hospital. Although the poison was extracted in time to save his life, it left him with a sickly gray skin-tone and a permanently damaged right arm that he keeps banaged to this day to hide it's blackened, shriveled appearance. Although he can use the arm, it is very weak and usually hangs limply by his side. When making hand seals, he does not bring his hands in front of him, as do most shinobi, but brings his left hand to his right and makes seals at his side.

His experiences in the academy only worsened upon his returned. The students who had ventured out with him had been punished, a punishment he had not shared as he had been recovering in the hospital. They resented him, blaming Kazuhito for the severity of his punishment. Meanwhile, he became very anxious, his speech often decaying into rambling blather. He wanted desperately to leave the academy, but his father, worried they would no longer be welcome in the village, would not hear of it.

Many of his lessons proceeded with difficulty, especially those centered around taijutsu. He was always frail, but his new anxieties made it difficult for him to focus properly to train, and soon he grew to despise those lessons. However, many of his teachers took note of his apparent intelligence as shown on written tests, and became obvious he had an aptitude for genjutsu.

Even with his weaknesses in physical combat, he was allowed to graduate the academy on his strong knowledge of genjutsu. As a Genin, though, others found him difficult to work with and unnerving. Even as his mastery of genjutsu increased, his poor social skills, utter ineptitude in physical combat, and tendency to crack under pressure left him as mere Genin until now, at the age of 14. He faces tremendous pressure from his father to prove his worth to the village sooon.

Personality

Kazuhito is awkward in social situations, often stammering or changing thoughts in mid-sentence. He has a tremendous lack of confidence, and is convinced he will never be of any value of his village. He is also embarrassed to train in physical combat in public, and often has to be forced to do so. He tends to appreciative toward anyone who shows him kindness.

Appearance

Kazuhito is a short, frail, grey-skinned boy who looks younger than he is.

The boy before you is short and slight, perhaps no more than 5'3" and less than 100 lbs. His face suggests he might be as young as 11, but his eyes are sunken and his face gaunt, high exposed cheekbones that on another might look attractive, but on him only create a skeletal look to his face, marked by long shadows that shift with the light. His nose is thin and bird-like, slightly hooked on the end and stretching out unusually far in front of his face. His hair his black and his irises the same, indistinguishable from his pupils, but his skin tone is otherwise surprisingly light, almost gray in complextion.

His clothing his mostly a light shade of grey, loose-fitting and flowing with wide leggings that mesh together to look almost like robes except when he runs or otherwise takes long strides. Breaking up the dullness of his otherwise colorless appearance are two orange sashes, one running diagonally down across his chest from his left shoulder, and the other knotted around his waist, with extra fabric trailing next to his right leg, down to his knee. Wrapped around his forhead, on black cloth, is a forehead protector bearing the symbol of Sunagakure.

His garb is sleeveless, exposing his arms, as thin as the rest of him, ending in hands with longer than average fingers. His left arm is exposed to the open air, revealing more of his smooth, grey skin, and immaculately kept nails painted the same shade of orange as his sashes, but his right hand is wrapped entirely in bandages and seems shriveled. Close observation reveals that it rarely moves.

Timeline

• 1 A.F. Aida Gorou, Kazuhito's father, begins to live with Kazuhito and his mother after years spent largely away from home as a mercenary.
• 4 A.F. Kazuhito's Shinobi aptitude is discovered. He is invited to train at the Sunagakure academy. His father accepts the offer with little input from Kazuhito himself. Kazuhito's arm is permanently damaged as a result of being lost in the desert and scorpion venom. Kazuhito graduates with excellent marks on written exercises but poor performance on physical tests.

February 1st

Journal,

I must confess, I am not quite sure where I should start. So much has been happening over the past few days. I think the likely culprit is the exams that are being held in the village. With so many visitors arriving, things are quite unsettled.

However, this change of starting a journal appears unrelated to the influx of outsiders. Previously, I had conversations with a particular bush down at the gardens. I had some very illuminating discussions. Of course I realize they weren’t really conversations as such, but even that imitation of a conversational partner helped me to think and to arrive at conclusions. Otherwise, it seems, my mind spins in circles and gets nowhere.

In any case, some days ago (the exact date eludes me) I was spotted by Kuroki Korouke of the village council. He was not pleased. I inferred that it was because he thought what I was doing was shameful, but now that I think back on it, that explanation fails to account for the entirety his behavior. He asked me details about my conversation, which was unpleasant because the whole idea behind talking to a bush is that they do not judge you regardless of what topic you speak on. And then he asked for a report on someone I had just met, who did not strike me as terribly important to begin with, but of course I obeyed. I even attempted to get a sketch of the person in question but my efforts were embarrassing and counter productive.

The worst part was that he ordered me to stop talking to inanimate objects! I can understand if he simply wanted me to be more discrete, but that was not what he asked. I suppose it is my own fault. Had I been more discrete in the first place, he would have had no cause to give me such an order. So now I am left to write. I will endeavor to keep this journal secret, so that it too is not taken from me.

February 17th

It is difficult for me to even write about this. Some time ago, I encountered a pair of twin girls identifying themselves as Jun and Nao. They seem very excitable and much more comfortable with physical contact than I am. In any case, I saw them again, this time, of all places, in the administration dome of Sunagakure. One of them came over to talk to me, the one that I thought was Jun. After talking to me for several minutes, and letting me refer to her by the name of her sister, I discovered that I had, in fact, had them backwards. That was embarrassing enough. I confess I was upset that she hadn't corrected me at once, but my behavior after that was still worse.

I cried. Not only in front of Jun and Nao, but of Watanabe Itami of the village council. It was mortifying. I wanted to believe that the girls liked me, and in hindsight, it seems that was the case all along. I just felt, for lack of a better word, teased. In any case, the girls left, and it seemed they believed that they were too much for me. I can hardly blame them.

But Watanabe said something interesting that has been on my mind since the incident: she said there was no need to abandon my emotions, which I confess I had always viewed as a weakness but, and I paraphrase here because I can not recall her exact words, that that did not mean I should not learn to confront situations that make me uncomfortable. I believe her immediate point was that, even if it was difficult, I should still do my best to interact with the twins. I tend to agree. I certainly enjoy their presence, even if it is stressful at times.
