Background

The twins were born during a storm in the Land of Water, fitting for their tragic history.
Hotaru was orphaned at a very young age. He's a member of the hidden mist village but his roots are in the land of wind with the rest of his family. Before the villages were formed, his family was wanderers hailing from the land of wind where many powerful puppeteers hailed from. Hotaru's parents were two very powerful puppeteers using their skills to help villages they passed through. They reached the land of water when his mother had twins Hotaru and Junko. At that time, the villages were forming and Sunagakure demanded that both Hotaru's parents return to their birthplace to help form the new puppet corps within Sungakure. Three times, once a year, Sunagakure approached them, requesting that they return to their roots and to the village. However, liking their freedom, they refused each year. Shortly after after they sent the message to sunagakure, Hotaru's father left to gather supplies in a nearby village. His father's corpse was returned to the family doorstep the next day. A note was attached to the body from the Sunagakure ninja saying 'We will not be denied.' So his mother did what any ninja would do, seek revenge for the death of her husband. Seven days later, their mother left the children in the care of a nearby villagers that she trusted. Then she told her children about how much she loved them before heading off to face the Sunagakure ninja who killed her husband. Her body was found 3 days later. It was decided that the twins were to be taken to the village hidden in the mist to be trained as ninja to honor their fallen parents. When they were old enough they used scrolls and puppet making tools left by their parents to make puppets of their own. But, both had different reasons. Hotaru's reason is to cheat death. He's seen twice now what happens when death takes someone he loves or when one stumbles blinded by rage into death. Hotaru does not wish to join them or to see anyone else he cares about die. You leave the ones you love and to him, that is a final insult to that love. He wants to find immortality though any means. So no one he knows has to die. To that end he's studying medical jutsu hoping to find a cure to death. He first thought that puppets were the way to go, puppets never fade if properly taken care of. They could last forever. But they're not alive. So make a poor substitute for a person. His only reason now to keep his puppets is to keep that final link with his parents.

Personality

Hotaru has Junko to rely upon, but the death of his parents were traumatizing and left him shaken and broken in many ways. Hotaru's personality is darker than most. He has been left numbed to the emotions of the world which leaves him hard and cynical. He views the world as black and white, some people are nice, most are not however. He keeps himself closed off to friendships or people. The few exceptions would be Junko, his twin, and anyone else on his ninja team. Most of all are his puppets, he treats his puppets like family. Of a very short list, he loves his puppets most of all. They are his coping mechanism for all the pain he has in his heart. He actually claims they 'understand him' when most can't or won't try to.

Appearance

Hotaru is a genin of kirigakure in his early teens. With flat gray hair it hangs past the ears looking like it could use a cut. He has a short pale face with piercing glacial blue eyes that always dig into the person he's looking at. Always with the hard stares. Almost always there is a bandage attached to his face someplace. It's either a gauze square or simple band aide, but always on one cheek or another, like he just got out of a fight. His body is slim and skinny, like his sister but more fleshed out and not slim to the point of unhealthy. There's very little body fat on him and looks like he's average for anything physical.

Hotaru is usually wearing a black long jacket with oversized sleeves that are always rolled up showing bandaged forearms and hands leaving the fingers visible. The jacket is open showing a white faded and sometimes dirty shirt that is always tucked in the front of a pair of gray slim hakama. On the pants is his mist ninja ID plate stitched on the hip, sometimes covered by the coat, sometimes not. The pants stop at the knees by a pair of dull purple toe-less shoes. A half metal choker hangs slightly cocked around his neck. Around his left shoulder and tucked under his right armpit is a bandoleer sling holding a large bag of ninja supplies hanging on his back.

Skills And Abilities

Hotaru is well versed as a medical ninja, though he lacks experience in the subject so has very few skills in this area.

Hotaru has inherited his parents use of puppets in his ninjutsu. His first puppet, Rokurokubi, is based off of a daemon of the same name. In addition to the normal tricks and weapons a puppet would carry, Rokurokubi also carries a huge double bladed scythe for close quarters fighting.

When not in use, Rokurokubi is stored away in a coffin that Hotaru carries around on his back.
