Fuma Asami is a mercenary ninja trying to become a royal guard to the Emperor in the Land of Jade, while keeping her family together.
Background
Fuma Asami is a shinobi of the Fuma Clan. While the Fuma typically serve as mercenaries who roam about, fighting where there's pay to be had and opportunities to test their skills, Asami's parents wished to find a more stable place to do both of these things, after experiencing the horrors of the Clan Wars. Asami and her little brother was lucky to make it out of those times alive. She spent the first 7 years of her life fighting through them. Still, as Fuma, they did not necessarily want a quiet life, or to seek "peace".
They wanted glory, recognition, power, wealth… And more than that, to be able to prove their skills were the greatest among shinobi, without being "geniuses" or having Kekkei Genkai. These were all things that were less likely to be earned by "independent contractors" like their family, with the Villages taking over the "business" of war for the most part. The family thus traveled to the Land of Jade, beyond and adjacent to the frozen Land of Iron, where the samurai dwelled. The Land of Jade was the closest country to the Southern Lands, whose culture, people, and problems were different from those of the continent where ninja held the greatest sway, without actually being part of it. There, it was said that an immortal emperor ruled (though the emperor's immortality was considered to be spiritual, rather than literal. There have been many emperors), permitting the various Daimyou to continue their business in governing their lands as long as they did not make it necessary for the Emperor or his armies of samurai to step in. They were neutral, and the Emperor was content to leave it that way.
However, any of sufficient talent could potentially find a place in his court, even ninja. Further, skilled body guards were always something the Emperor was on the look-out for. He essentially collected powerful or prestigious warriors to guard him, not just as protection but as a status symbol. Asami, her brother Taro, and her parents thus went in search of this mythical land, assured that their talents would win them the recognition they felt they deserved. It was not as easy to reach as it was to hear rumors of however.
There was misfortune waiting for them.
Asami's family faced many trials, including having to trek through the snow-covered Land of Iron, dodging samurai patrols, and simply surviving the seemingly constant winter. They trained as they went, took jobs wherever they could, but few of the countless villages and hamlets required military services with the samurai roaming the land and enforcing law. They were many times tempted to try to take on the few threats such as bandits that could be handled with ninja skills as work and demand compensation afterwards, but they controlled their aggressive tendencies, and didn't draw attention.
Many of their jobs consisted primarily of physical labor and various menial tasks, while they made sure to keep their shinobi skills sharp by training in secret, away from others. More than once they were almost caught, however, and it was obvious that it was only a matter of time before misfortune befell them if they kept "village hopping" from one settlement to another on their way out of the country. However, the environment was too brutal to do otherwise. The massive country of samurai was simply too much for even them to traverse without shelter.
And so, the eventuality occurred. Asami's father had to expose his skills to defend his family during an inspection by samurai who were looking for assassins who had made an attempt upon the Emperor (showing just how close they were to the Land of Jade). He bought them time and allowed the three to slip away. The trio fled and fled, covering as much distance as possible, not stopping for anything. But Taro became exhausted (though Asami too was quite worn out), and when they finally had to stop, Taro also fell ill.
For months the family sheltered in the wilderness, emerging only to obtain food wherever they could, by hunting, by foraging, by theft… As the season became warmer, and Asami's brother recovered, they set out with renewed hope. They had had quite long enough to ponder over the missing member of their family, to worry about him, to go through hope and despair over and over as they imagined him finding them. They had set up secret markings in the woods that only a ninja would notice and only a Fuma could decypher, but had heard nothing from him…
It seemed clear that if their father was still alive, he wasn't going to find them in their cave. It was time to move on, one way or another.
Asami, her mother, and her brother all made it to the Land of Jade. It was green, and rich, and beautiful, and majestic. It was like a dream come true after all the years it had taken to reach it. Farmlands, rolling hills, vast plains, enormous and ornate structures, monuments and cherry blossoms… Everything was perfect. Except that one of those they'd originally set out with was no longer with them.
That sobered them from their euphoric joy, and they resumed their journey. They still had a long way to go.
They had to meld into their surroundings, to learn the cultural nuances and the way the people lived, to memorize their customs and their manner of dress, and their speech patterns. The first few months were spent mostly in observation. It seemed that even the peasant workers wore fine clothing of silk, and opulence among the nobles was truly staggering. Being able to live like that was even more appealing now than it had been when they'd begun their journey.
Eventually, they made it to the capitol, where a tournament was to be held, and where the champion would receive a prize. It was rumored that the Emperor himself would be observing for anyone who might be qualified to join his royal guard. Allowing them to protect him simply on the basis of skill alone would be foolish, of course, so they'd have to do more than simply win to prove their loyalty and trustworthiness. But it was still an excellent chance to showcase their skills.
Assuming forged identities for now, Asami, her mother, and Taro all joined the tournament individually, to maximize their chances of at least one of them winning. The possibility existed they'd wind up fighting each other, of course, but they were willing to go that far. Or so they told themselves. At least as long they didn't actually have to kill any of their family.
The tournament proceeded as planned, with Asami's mother, Setsuna, easily defeating her opponents, and even Asami and Taro managing to progress with minimal difficulty. But there were still many foes they had never seen the fighting styles of before, and the skill level continued to increase as their position within the tournament did as well. Setsuna took the time to evaluate the remaining opposition during one of the breaks, and determined that there were very dangerous people among them, and that it would be better if Asami and Taro forfeited.
Both Asami and Taro were reluctant, to say the least. Taro was outraged, and had far more trust in his abilities than was really warranted. But Asami, like her mother, had a unique sensitivity to danger and the Chakra of others, and she could feel the threat as well. If they continued through the tournament, misfortune would befall them. The pall of danger that had hung around that town where Asami's father had last been seen had been unnoticeable to Asami herself then, though Setsuna was aware and had warned her husband to no avail.
But now Asami could feel it too, thanks to all of her training and experience. And she didn't plan to lose any more of her family through carelessness. She drugged her own brother under the guise of comforting him after her mother's stern refusal to permit her children to continue through the tournament.
Taro talked of entering anyway and defying their mother. He felt he was an adult now, so he didn't have to listen anymore (or so he reasoned). But he went off to slumber, using his older sister as a pillow as she assured him she would wake him before his match.
She didn't.
Their mother won the tournament, but the opposition she faced was considerable. The Fuma family were not the only shinobi who had slipped into the competition, and there were powerful ex-samurai and martial arts masters as well. They had made the right choice. Even after Taro managed to stumble out into the fighting ring, tearing himself out of his tranquilized daze, and tried to fight while he could barely control his body. Taro managed to win his fight through his greater battle experience and the power of Chakra, primarily, and even then he endured serious injury and nearly lost his life.
He was furious with their mother from that point forward, believing that Setsuna had forced Asami to drug him. He trusted his sister more than his own mother. Asami's claims to the contrary fell upon deaf ears. But the prize was won, and the family would live well for a long time to come. Until the next tournament, or the next opportunity to make themselves appealing enough to the Emperor to join his royal guard. From this point forward, they would be watched. So they'd have to be on their best behavior.
Taro, however, had other plans. Feeling betrayed and rebellious, he left his mother behind and Asami too when she wouldn't come with him. He wished Asami well, and hoped that one day she'd see how Setsuna was holding her back, and come find him.
It's been over a year since then. Another tournament is rumored to be coming in the near future, and the ground work has been laid to make this the pivotal competition that will get Asami's family into the palace, as well as the recognition they deserve.
But Asami has learned that her brother has been seen in the Land of Iron, and that he has been attacking and ambushing samurai outposts and patrols. She doesn't know why he's doing this, but she's determined to bring him back before he does something that will get him killed or ruin things for all of them. And along the way, she wants to prepare herself for the tournament… Even if it means returning to the shinobi countries and doing freelance work there as well.
Personality
Asami has great pride in her skills as a Fuma ninja, but she also has a relatively cool head, and greater sensitivity to the emotions of other than her brother. She is able to think and plan calmly, to put aside personal feelings, and do what must be done. That said, she also cares deeply about her family, and will sacrifice much for them. She will use any means to protect them, even if it means starting use Ninjutsu more heavily than she currently is. She will sacrifice her pride if it's for the sake of those she loves.
Asami tends to come across as reservered, subdued, and respectful, though she can also show a bit of Fuma arrogance and aggression in battle. But she still keeps alert even while engaging in boasting, often using the stereotype of Fuma being prideful against enemies by allowing them to think that she is the same, or that she is overconfident, when she is really analyzing everything.
Despite her seriousness, Asami can be both playful and gentle, especially with children. It isn't that she doesn't have a sense of humor, but she doesn't relax easily. She has to be comfortable around someone to lower her defenses.
Appearance
Asami is a young woman with brown hair often put up in a ponytail, held in place through chopsticks, hair ties, or bronze pins. She has bright blue eyes, and small brown eyebrows like dabs of paint over them. A beige bodysuit covers her, with a stylish (if very abbreviated) black dogi top, with red trim along the edges, and a broad obi cinched about her middle-section. Stylized crimson designs of chrysanthemums adorn the garment.
Various straps are cinched at various locations on her limbs, to have places to put additional weaponry or tool pouches, and she has overlapping armored plate vambraces on both arms, and shin guards of similar nature on her legs, overtop of her boots. She carries a wakizashi and a katana in a sheath at the small of her back, so that they're easier to draw in close quarters.
A large Fuma Shuriken is often strapped between her shoulder blades.

I think you're going down a dangerous road, little brother. I hope that you can see that on your own. But even if you don't, I'll be there to show you and bring you back. |
Setsuna |

I respect you, and I think you have much more wisdom than our father did. But I also think you are perhaps too driven to achieve success for our family sometimes. But maybe that's what's necessary to preserve us. We are Fuma after all. If we did not push others aside, we would be at the back of the line. |

Fuma Momomo |
Ally |
We've worked together on a few missions. She has potential, I think, but she's so scatter-brained and unorganized and just… TOTALLY lacking in direction, that I don't know if that's why Himeko has stopped trying to train her or if Himeko not training her right is why she's like this. On the one hand, that's bad for her as a ninja. On the other, I admire her innocence and enthusiasm. And I'm a little bit envious of it. I can see how having an actual childhood would have been fun. |
Nagamura Shuuren |
Patron |
The patron of the Fuma Clan, though I imagine he has his own ends he's pursuing in aiding us. He established a place for the Fuma to gather and live, even if transiently, for as long or as short as we like, within his Village. He has asked little of us in return, though my brother has been going out on missions for him, I assume. I'm not sure what Taro is doing, but I'm not seeing him very often… But then, I'm doing plenty of missions of my own, so I have no room to complain. All in all, he seems to be more of a benefit to us than the opposite right now. I'll wait and see whether there's signs of that changing, as I imagine the rest of the Clan is too. |

A pure-blood descendant of the Fuma Clan. She thinks that means something. Maybe it does to some people. But not to me. Still, no reason to be rude to the "princess" of the Fuma Clan. Even if she isn't the nicest person herself. |

I was taught to have pride in my skills. That being able to prove myself better than the shinobi who rely upon gimmicks like magic eyes and such was what mattered most to the Fuma. But sometimes, I wonder if any of that really matters. Because when I fight for real, it's not my pride I'm fighting for. It's the joy of giving my life meaning through defeating my foes. Maybe that's a form of pride. |
