Hizumu Sanda was born on the high-seas and seemed to meet with more adventure each step of the way. Whether for good or for bad, Sanda ended up a relatively strong-willed individual that sometimes lets her insecurities show via violence.

Background

+ The Pirate's Life

Since she was born, Hizumu Sanda was a child of the sea. Her parents, both Hizumu due to abilities rather than blood, were not affiliated with the hidden villages and clans that were warring on the shore. They were pirates, actually. "Honorable pirates, though," they liked to argue! "Nothing like those rough and tumble idiots that claim to be pirates when they only like to rape and pillage >:|" And so Sanda grew up on the high seas, rarely touching foot to solid ground except for occasional supply runs. The girl one day found herself and her parents stuck in a storm. They were warned by the weather, but they were unhappy to head back so soon after they had set off from restocking. Foolishly, they pressed on into the storm!

Some might think that the ending is a terrible one, and they are very much correct! The storm was vicious and lightning-filled, and Sanda couldn't help but wonder if the gods themselves were seeking to kill her. Lightning shattered her parents' boat in multiple places, and one stray streak happened to explode the very wood she was standing atop. Sanda, found herself tumbling overboard and into the sea, coming up to giant waves that tossed her around mercilessly. When everything finally calmed down, Sanda was alone in the ocean with only a few planks of wood in sight. The boat? It was gone. But as luck would have it, Sanda was not so far from shore. The ocean carried her to a beach, and the five year old was found unconscious one sunny afternoon.

+ Slave Away

Sanda was found by … More pirates, as odd as it may sound. Recently, they had just burned down a village and taken a few prisoners. They actually thought Sanda was one of those villagers, and she ended up a slave for a year on that ship. It was rough work that involved pain, sweat, and blood in no small amount. The girl would be whipped often for not working as hard as a full-grown man despite her small stature, and occasionally the pirates - at least the particular disgusting ones that were more than a little lonely - would do unpleasant things with her late in the night. Sanda was only able to escape three years later, when another slave was brought upon the ship. A cook.

The cook was quite taken by the young girl. He had a daughter of his own, actually, and he felt that Sanda was a sort of replacement for the one he lost to these nasty lot of pirates. When he could, he'd sneak her an extra piece of bread or maybe a larger helping of the gruel he was made to cook for the crew. One day, he took a chance when the captain was asleep. The cook was bringing up some food to the captain's quarters, and he noticed a key that was meant for the door of the slaves' chambers. He grabbed it carefully, hardly daring to breathe as he attempted to snatch it from the captain's belt. The luck of the gods was with that cook, it seems, because the captain didn't stir.

The cook left the captain's quarters as quickly and silently as he could, checking that no one saw his suspicious actions. And he was forced to wait. He waited until it was evening, and he unlocked the door to the slaves' chambers. Sanda was able to escape quietly, stealing one of the lifeboats while the other slaves rebelled loudly. It was with that din that she slipped away from the pirates that held her for those three years, though she never saw the cook afterwards. Sometimes Sanda wonders what happened to him. Did he escape? Did he die? Was he able to return home? The girl may never know…

+ A True Pirate

For the next few days, Sanda was alone. It was a first for her, actually, and she didn't like it at all. She sought out company, hunting for land and ship while paddling the wooden boat ever-west. Surely she would find land if she only traveled west. Sanda was chanced upon another boat full of more pirates. These ones were a bit kinder to the lass. When they found her, she was unconscious and withering away for lack of food and water. They brought her back from near-death, and she came to join their crew for the next two years of her life. With them, she enjoyed the life of a pirate. The one that involves pillaging and attacking merchant ships for their goods. She came to learn the waters well, managing to learn maps and figures. She was set to become the captain's first mate when disaster struck yet again.

According to a bit of information that her crew acquired, there was a ship containing chakra metal that was sailing to the Land of Lightning from the Land of Wind. Sanda had outlined a plan to take out the merchant ship as it was going into port. The attack would have to be timed so that no one from the shores could see it. She thought she planned it perfectly despite the youthful age of 10. And the captain trusted her… why? Well, mostly because he wanted to test her mettle, and she had proven to be bright thus far. Sadly, the Intel was incomplete. The merchant ship had hired shinobi to guard it, which meant that the pirates stood no chance. Sanda was sent overboard by the captain himself so that she would survive a potential slaughtering.

Sanda swam away from the boat and towards the shore. She had a bit of help from a buoy that the captain shoved in her hands before he pushed her away, which meant that she survived the journey without exhausting herself completely. Once again, Sanda was alone on the shore, and this time no one came to pick her up.

+ Washed Up

So now Sanda is alone. Truly alone. The young girl laid upon the beach for a day before she realized something about the land: it was cold. She had no fire, nor did she have fire-making abilities, so she picked herself up and started to walk. The walk warmed her, actually… So she continued to walk until she couldn't feel her feet. Notably, her feet had no shoes to cover them, as she had kicked them off when she entered the water. Easier to swim that way… Sanda walked and walked, likely leaving some bloody footprints in her wake the longer she traveled.

Eventually, though, she stumbled upon a small village hidden in a rocky valley. They were located near a small lake that provided water. The lake was kept fresh by snowmelt from the upper regions of the mountains that protected the very town. Sanda collapsed about five miles from this village, where she could see it and feel as if she could never reach it. She was found by a traveling merchant and brought back to the village. Sanda was filthy, and many of the townsfolk were wary of her. At least up until she had a bath and was properly cleaned. They noted the scars that were on her back and the burn-mark that she had on the back of her hand, and they decided they would attempt to help her and give her a home. After several days of sleep, Sanda awoke in a strange house. She was sleeping in a soft fluffy hammock that did not sway with the ocean's waves. She was in a room far too large to be anything but the captain's quarters, and when she looked outside, she only saw land that was green and brown.

Naturally, Sanda was confused. The young girl stayed in this strange hammock that the people called a 'bed', and she didn't speak to anyone. They let her go to the local school and learn, but she didn't show up at all. Sanda was a very strange person to the villagers, and they didn't really know how to handle the girl. She ended up being left alone. The children of the village didn't play with her, the adults let her do what she liked, and Sanda had no idea what she was expected to do. No one was truly in a position to care for the girl, so she one day she up and left.

+ From Raiun ...

Sanda had heard the villagers talk about another village that was supposedly not too far off. Ten miles or so. She decided to make her way there. It took only a day's worth of travel to complete the journey, and Sanda found herself keeping to the streets of Raiun City much like an urchin. She learned quickly the ways of 'gangs' and bandits, as well as how to fend for herself. Occasionally, she noticed people with strange headbands on them. 'They look quite stern,' she thought. And so she went up to one in particular and asked him who he was.

"I am a shinobi from Kumogakure," the man told her. 'What is a shinobi?' she asked, knowing Kumogakure only as a stronghold from the maps her captain had let her read. "A ninja. We protect the Land of Lightning and its citizens. We do any and all tasks to make sure things run smoothly. Of course, we work for a small price. So we aren't bad off, either." Then the man paused, wondering why he was talking to this street rat. She looked, by this point, quite ragged and skinny. The man considered Sanda for the longest time, it seemed, and eventually he said to her, "Tell you what. I'll show you a bit of the life I lead. You seem interested in it."

Sanda blinked at the news and said, 'But… I don't have any money…' And a bile rose up in her throat as she thought of other means to pay for the chance. She looked upon the shinobi with fear, now, and she was tempted to run. She did run, actually, but the shinobi was quick to grab her.

'No need for payment. I have a small place back near Kumo. It's outside the village.' And so Hizumu Kaoru brought Sanda to his home. The man taught her the basics of ninjutsu, Genjutsu, and Taijutsu that every student in the academy knew. Clone Jutsu, Replacement Technique, Henge, and basic Escape methods on top of stealth and basic Genjutsu perception. Sanda, much like the knowledge sponge she tended to be, soaked in this new life with enthusiasm. She also learned that her interests fell under Genjutsu and Ninjutsu.

Sanda continued to be mentored by Kaoru, slowly learning Tree and Water walking. She learned her elemental affinity and found that she could even use storm manipulation, much to Kaoru's surprise. "It's as if I was granted a daughter!" he laughed, despite only being with her since she was twelve. When Kaoru was sent on missions, Sanda was left alone. During those times, she learned basic house tending skills like cooking and cleaning, and she became proficient in both arts.

It is today that Hizumu Sanda will stand before the Kumogakure administration. Kaoru taught her quite a lot, and he suggested to the Raikage and his Head Ninja that Sanda be permitted the rank of Chuunin. After a meticulous testing, Sanda was granted the rank of Chuunin. She was, of course, to be watched. But now she fought for Kumogakure, much like Hizumu Kaoru (with whom she still lives with today).

Personality

Sanda can be … Well, the best way to describe it is 'Tsundere'. She can be quite violent instead of showing her true emotions, which has its ups and downs. Let it be known that Sanda really doesn't like showing those feelings, and she's easily embarrassed when they are revealed. While Sanda usually prefers acting tough, she does enjoy cute animals… They end up getting a lot of pets/scritches/treats when they're around Sanda. In a way, they're a bit like her weakness…

Appearance

Hizumu Sanda is a teenager with charcoal-grey/black hair and sea foam-green eyes. The teen keeps her hair short, never falling past her chin. It's often tied back with a red cloth or bandana. Sanda has an air about her that screams 'nervous'. The teen seems uncertain when 'strange' things happen. It is only when she finds herself on a boat that her demeanor might change. But even then, there is still a hint of fear.

Her clothes consist of a red top and a black jacket that keeps wind and rain from freezing her skin. Her right hand has a distinct marking on it, and the skin is shiny and a bit reddened from the old scar. The girl's pants are black and seem to billow sometimes, much like the modern-day cargo pants with the multitude of pockets. Acting as a belt, the Kumogakure hitai-ate is displayed proudly.

Relationships

'Family'

The Hizumu Clan, as sea-farers, don't really have many blood ties. In fact, it's completely possible that most of the relations are not related at all by blood. As such, Sanda considers family to be less about the blood and more about the relation that was built.

+ Show Entry #01: A Ninja's Life for Me

I entered the world of Shinobi, per Kaoru's bidding. He was so happy that I told him I would do it… He even suggested I be Chuunin. Baka… He shouldn't have done that. I'm not Chuunin material. Maybe if I act like a clueless dolt, they'll demote me. I heard there were strong Genin; heck, even our Head Ninja is young and powerful. What's wrong with being old and weak? Well, no matter. The test is soon, so I'll be able to prove quickly what I can do.

Later

Those shinobi tricked me! They put me in a life or death situation, and they saw my full capabilities! Well, I was granted the rank of Chuunin, of course. I'm not too please… I would have preferred to be a genin. Student is out of the question since Kaoru taught me everything they know… *sigh* Well, gods grant me luck.

+ Show Entry #02: A Tour

So soon after gifted the mark of the Cloud, I found myself escorted by a very … Hyper … Individual. Hebisuuhai Sakuya. She showed me the inn where most residents without homes stay. Well, I showed her where I normally live, which is a bit south of Kumo and across the bridge. And once I showed her that, she seemed to be a bit surprised I had a new place to stay… Well, I'll keep up the act, I suppose. It's hard to keep track of that, and I'm sure my true self will flare up eventually. I'll be fine… I've been through worse. Later, we went to the training center. The Raikage was there, and he was training his student. Sakuya seemed more interested in the Raikage than she seemed in leading me around, so it was awkward… At least in my view. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised since Hiei is pretty good-looking for most. I just don't get what the fuss is…

+ Show Entry #03: The Almost-Failed Mission

My first mission was almost a disaster. I think the saving grace, at least for me, is that I wasn't leading it as my first mission. I was simply a part of it. We were making our way through to the city when bandits attacked us. Little did we know, those bandits decided to set up a little surprise for us. This, of course, was unexpected… We ended up falling into a huge underground tunnel network that seemed to be meant for traveling to the capital. We followed them, with others keeping the way blocked, and managed to make it safely so we could deliver something important to the Daimyo… But that was almost a disaster… I'm glad it all ended well, though.

Life in Kumogakure is a bit strange. It's a bit like being a pirate, but there is no danger that happens everyday. Storms that are incoming, for one… And then there's the usual being looted by other pirates, though thankfully that didn't happen as much. Trying to plot who to take next… Kumogakure doesn't have that. They have organized missions that go from assassination to pet-sitting. It's all a bit strange, really… And a big adjustment. I suppose one of the better things about it is that I can trust people a bit easier… Or at least, the people I know seem more trustworthy. Like Arashi and Reza and Kaoru. I remember the last captain I served under always said that I trusted too easily… But he didn't really say anything past that. I wonder… if it's a bad thing or a good thing. Probably a bit of both, I suppose.
