Background

Hoshigaki Onchou has spent her entire life training and fighting. While one of the younger among the Hoshigaki consigned to the prison island where Kaguya Mitsuo showed up to 'test' the Clan in combat, she has known little else. She spent 3 years on the Hoshigaki home island with her parents, and then another 15 in the training hell set up by Kaguya Mitsuo, and has only recently emerged to join Kirigakure as a shinobi as the Hoshigaki Clan pledged their allegiance.

While their existence had largely been kept secret, a reserve force that had been meant to emerge much sooner, but did not until news of the First Mizukage's disappearance reached them, a fully-militarized, ready-to-fight ninja Clan was not a resource to be scoffed at. The Hidden Mist accepted these reinforcements, and Onchou has spent the past couple months being quietly integrated, proving herself in battle, and gradually learning how to live in the outside world.

However, one of her earliest battles was with poison-using enemies, afflicting Onchou's eyes with a toxin that rendered them extremely sensitive to light. It might be possible to eventually cure her, though her eyes seem to have absorbed a lot of the toxin before she could be treated, but for now she has to wear black-out goggles almost all the time to avoid being blinded. The poisoning of her eyes provides no benefit whatsoever. Even starlight and moonlight are too bright for her. As a result, her physical resilience, her vision, and her ability to concentrate have been reduced via these toxins and the suffering that has resulted. This limits her stamina as well as her defense against Genjutsu, and her ability to form hand seals also due to being distracted by the pain.

However, the training she endured since she was 4 years old has kept her in relatively good shape even after her hospitalization, and she is already prepared to return to duty and continue fighting on behalf of the Village she had adopted as her home. While it is a strange place, and she still feels and is treated like an outsider despite having been promoted to Chuunin thanks to her efforts in stopping the poisoners from harming the farming communities around the outlying islands of the Land of Water, Onchou believes this can be a place where she belongs someday.

As long as nothing extreme happens to alienate her from the Village of course… But hey, it's just a place full of crazy, violent people. How could anything EXTREME happen?

Onchou's parents are still alive, though her father is missing an arm from one of the more brutal training sessions. They are active shinobi, working out in the field, but they see their daughter relatively frequently between missions. Onchou has a sister and three brothers, though she used to have more.

Personality

Onchou values her family, but she values even more the opportunity to prove that all she has endured has been worth it, and that she is a true warrior of the Hidden Mist like everyone else.

She also has her eye on a certain sword, and becoming skilled enough to wield it. Samehada should compliment her capabilities well, and allow her to better serve her new home. As well, no longer having to live in fear of the First Mizukage makes Onchou feel free for the first time in many years. And with that freedom comes the desire to gain power of her own, so that no tyrant can ever overwhelm her through sheer force ever again.

Though the ghost story of Hoshigaki Aoihada is passed around, of how she simply took Chakra from her opponents to become stronger, and was one of the last ones standing against Mitsuo when he called his invasion done, lingers in Onchou's mind. The possibility of learning that same power is there, she believes. And learning to use an opponent's own strength against them would be a fitting way to retain her freedom while also retaining her position as a Kirigakure ninja.

Onchou is a disarmingly friendly kunoichi, who speaks more like a man than a woman. She's extremely casual, as a way of expressing herself after over a decade of stifling conformity. She still remembers how to be respectful and formal towards her superiors just fine, but when the situation doesn't call for it, she prefers a laid-back approach to communication.

It takes a lot to anger her. Injury, insult, grunt work, struggle and frustration, none of these make her lash out. As a result, she can be somewhat hard to read for those opponents who rely on psychological warfare. Even when she's bloody and barely standing, she still seems to be treating it like a game. She isn't. But that's the impression given. And that, in itself, is a form of counter-psychological warfare.

Appearance

Onchou is a very tall and lanky woman with short, spikey red hair. She is almost constantly grinning, showing off a mouth full of triangular, shark-like teeth set in black gums. She has black-out goggles on, seemingly blinding her, but she appears to be able to see just fine despite them. Common attire is standard Kirigakure Chuunin gear, with a mesh shirt underneath, though a black mantle bearing the mark of the Hoshigaki Clan may be worn as well.

When armed, in addition to basic ninja tools she also carries at least one thin, straight blade, often sheathed at her lower back.
