Hyuga Hitomi is the disappointing middle child of Ryouga and Yue. Where her sister was a genius prodigy and her brother is a fiercely motivated young man, Hitomi has never truly excelled at anything, her only gift has seemingly been the ability to be completely overlooked in all things. With the death of her sister, the duty of obtaining revenge has fallen on her shoulders.

Hitomi has always been at the middle of the class, perhaps even more towards the bottom than that, honestly. Consistently outperformed by her older sister Harumi and threatened by her overbearing younger brother Eri, Hitomi faded into the background. The transition to the Village did little to change that. The Hyuga Clan has had to work hard to earn its position within Konohagakure, and they didn't have the time nor inclination to mollycoddle a girl whose older sister was, in all ways, superior.

Hitomi was happy to stay in this class throughout her academy experience. Weak in ninjutsu and genjutsu, the young girl was at least passable in taijutsu. Her instructors were largely infuriated by her tendency to let others show off. It is rare that a ninja's ability to pass unnoticed is a negative, but for Hitomi, it truly was. When the time came to write up her reports, her instructors usually failed to come up with more than a few words…

And then Harumi was killed in battle against an unknown foe. The entire team disappeared, and there have been no leads.

Suddenly, life became a question of expectations. Her parents pushed her forwards and frankly bullied the Academy staff to get the barely-qualified girl through to the status of Genin. Talk at the dinner table has turned to revenge; of restoring honor to the family and her Clan.

But has anyone asked Hitomi how she feels about shouldering this burden? No. Hitomi is of the Main Branch. It is her responsibility to seek out and redress the balance of honor. The girl is too scared of disappointing her Clan to object, and terrified of the prospect of anyone who is capable of murdering a ninja as powerful as her sister was; let alone an entire team! Who knows what monsters lurk out there?

But it is the duty of the Main Family to bear their burdens stoically and with dignity, to act as leaders and shapers of the future. Hitomi's dream of a quiet, unremarkable life in the shadow of her sister is shattered… and she finds herself more and more looking to the memory of the past to guide her in the future. Maybe, if she works really hard, she will be able to cast her own shadow, and hide in that until she becomes the child the Clan so clearly wanted.

If there was one word to sum up Hitomi, it would be 'meek'.

Hitomi does not believe in herself, or her abilities, because she knows that compared to her sister, she is incredibly weak. Objectively speaking, she is in fact pretty good for a Genin in her taijutsu… even if she is quite deficient in her other skills.

She is far more determined than she gives herself credit for, however. The young girl has always lived in the shadow of her sister, and she's never been envious of that; she admired her sister for her strength and intelligence. She loved her, and so long as Harumi was there, she knew that her own deficiencies would never be truly important.

Now that Harumi is dead, those responsibilities weigh very heavily on Hitomi. But despite how much she fears her own inability to live up to those expectations, she has no intention of doing anything other than her best. She judges herself very harshly for her own fears and doubts, yet those very fears may be her greatest strength, because she does not have the absolute confidence in herself or the arrogance in the superiority of her own skills which did, in fact, lead to her sister's downfall.

Her tendency to second-guess herself, and her determination not to let down those who have to rely on her, makes her a very tactical thinker. Only time will tell whether this is recipe enough to make a great ninja.

Appearance

Hitomi stands at just under five foot tall, a thin, pale young girl of probably twelve years. There's no prizes for guessing her heritage, however; she has the black hair and grey eyes so common amongst the Hyuga Clan.

She wears her hair short, her forehead protector wrapped tight and in its proper place now that she has earned it. She favors unremarkable clothing, a soft brown sweatshirt with a dark green scarf, and baggy, lighter green pants. Her feet are supported with a pair of soft shoes, and the girl's clothing does a lot to help hide the fact that there's really not an awful lot of muscle mass to her; in truth, a strong breeze might be enough to blow her away.

Ninja Journal

+ Show 09/12/10 - Entry #01: My Taijutsu Is Strong.

Akinori-sama gave me a speech today about how I should have faith in myself and believe that I will overcome Harumi in time. I do not know if I believe him, but it is true that I want so badly to do my duty. I have decided to keep a journal of my progress so that I can track it. Akinori-sama says that it is important to set goals and achieve them. So my big goal is to discover what happened to Harumi, and obtain justice… but before I can get there, I must be stronger than Harumi was, and before I do that… there are so many little goals which must be reached before then!

I completed my first mission a few days ago. We were protecting the road between Sunagakure and Konohagakure. I don't know much about Sunagakure, but it is hidden in a desert I think? As we got closer along the road it seemed to get warmer, but that might have been my imagination.

Satori-sama led Jin-sama, Toshio-san, Riye-chan and myself in disguise as merchants. I did not do very well with my henge, but Satori-sama wrapped a shawl around my face so it was alright in the end.

When we were attacked I realized that there would be a lot of them in the forest and some might get away. The mission was to arrest them, so I made it look like I ran away and then stealthily flanked them to cut off their retreat.

It was a good plan. The others were easily able to deal with the bandits - I think they were mostly farmers, and that made me sad because I suspect that they are just desperate people trying to survive with all the chaos that has happened recently. But that does not excuse their crimes, even if it is enough to explain them.

I caught the leader as he tried to flee, and he attempted to hit me with a kunai and a shuriken. His taijutsu was weak, though, and my Gentle Fist was enough to incapacitate him in just a few seconds.

I think Satomi-sama was impressed, even if she didn't say so. It was hard to drag his body back to the others, though. Who knew men weighed so much? I was very tired when we got home, but I tried to hide it from my parents.

When they asked how it went, I said that I fought the strongest man there and won in three strokes.

Eri said that he could do the same in just one.

Mother said that I performed 'as expected'. Father did not say anything.

I feel good about how the mission went.

+ Show 10/5/10 - Entry #02: I Am Bad At Diary.

I have not been keeping this diary as up-to-date as I probably should. I intended to write an entry every day that something happened, but I am not good at words and I am afraid that someone might find this diary and think that I am dull.

Most of my days progress in the same way. I go up to Hokage Mountain to train in the early morning or late at night when nobody else is likely to interrupt me. I'm embarrassed about how terrible my stance still is compared to others in my family. I may be able to deal with bandits, but I have a long way to go before I can best other ninja.

I completed my second mission, but it did not go very well. I was supposed to find Meow-Chan before she was eaten by zombies outside the village. Finding her was easy, but she was in a very tall tree. I am not good at climbing trees. Uchiha Ryo was nearby, and I later found out he is a Chuunin. At the time, I thought he was another Genin, because he is so young, and now he probably thinks I am incurably rude for being so relaxed around him.

He is very bald. I'm not sure if he shaves his head because he likes how it looks, or if it is some sort of illness or injury … Uchiha use fire a lot, so maybe he burned his hair off in some sort of fireball accident? I found it very hard not to stare at him. It is weird.

He is very strong, though. He used the Sharingan to capture the cat, and passed her off to me. The cat's taijutsu was strong enough to make me bleed. Yasuki-san was also there - he is a Yamanaka, and he seemed pleasant enough. I think he wanted to help, but Ryo-san was able to take care of it very quickly and we agreed it was better to get back to the village before we were devoured by monsters.

I've also met a strange ninja from Amegakure. Nara Honosuke is not aligned with Konohagaure like his clansmen, and he has a talking toad.

We discussed duty and why shinobi war. And he seemed to imply that if I give up I will die. I don't know if I like him yet, I still think the little villages would be better served if they were absorbed into the Great Villages, but he seems to like his independence. Apparently, being a Chuunin in Amegakure is actually a really big deal. Other places do things in very strange ways.
