Background
Kuroyari Juubei was born on the Shattered Shores of the Land of Lightning, in the care and custody of his kin among the Sanyari. A healthy child from the very start, he grew quickly and played roughly, ever eager to win the next challenge and learn a new thing or two. He was precisely what his family members looked for, someone who would grow to be large and strong, capable of bearing their heavy arms to serve the Sunspear with honor.
At age eight, due to his swift growth and physical aptitudes, Kuroyari was chosen to begin training. Such things do happen at an early age among their unforgiving blood. He would learn the Kuroyari style as soon as he could pick up a katana, and once he grew bigger still, the student donned heavier armor and began to favor a nodachi as his weapon of choice. Juubei was a quick learner when it came to their combat style, progressing from the rank of student to soldier by age ten.
It was around this time that Juubei, who had been seen as a worthwhile investment, was considered for a special division of the Sanyari: the Kuroyari, the Blackspear samurai. Although he wished to remain among his kin, when he was selected, Juubei felt that the only honorable act under his bushido code would be to obey. He was sent to Kumogakure to live for a time, and while there, they would ferret out and discern what ninjutsu arts he might be given to at the start.
Juubei's eventually unveiled talent was unexpected. Despite being so physical a fighter, he had the rare, innate predisposition toward medical ninjutsu. Yes, he'd mastered such things as water and tree walking, but that was secondary to this newly revealed talent. Juubei could only remain in Kumogakure for a time, but their medical shinobi taught him the basics of how he might put his talent to practical use. He was then sent home to the Sanyari, two years older and more experienced between his ninjutsu training and his continued personal training of the Kuroyari style.
It was a proud occasion for Juubei's return. He was given the honor of bowing down before Lord Tenmei, and in doing so, he became a full samurai. A suit of red armor with a cape bearing the Blackspear emblem was gifted to him, along with a fine nodachi. Lord Tenmei asked that he travel between the great villages in these troubled times, doing honorable deeds where he could and thinking carefully before choosing where he could best swear fealty. The dangers the world faces are better served by Juubei being able to go anywhere to lend honorable aid, and it also does good to the names of the Sunspear and the Blackspear.
Personality
Juubei is what one would expect of a samurai, concerned with his bushido and conducting himself honorably while a guest among foreign villages. However, he's otherwise surprisingly down to earth and easy to get along with for most people. He enjoys athletics and swordsmanship, which is no surprise, but he's also learned some surprisingly diverse jutsu in his training as a Blackspear and beyond. Perhaps this is what inspired his love of learning, for Juubei continues to befriend and study the arts practiced by actual ninja in the hidden villages.
Dishonor is absolutely against his character. He does not draw his blade against a helpless foe, strike at an opponent's back, go back on his word (unless he was deceived), or another such inappropriate deeds. A very trustworthy young man. Having been to every hidden village without offending any of them, he's also demonstrated a personality given to adaptation and tolerance. One day, he might even swear fealty, but he's yet to be persuaded by any one village.

This young man looks like he has seen his trials, though his hale and hearty frame has endured and thrived in the face of such challenges. Indeed, he's quite the big fellow at six feet and three inches. The young fellow's great stature is matched by an equally impressive physique of bulky musculature, the sort meant for brute force, rather than the tightly chiseled frame of someone lighter on their feet. His flesh is tanned, most likely from exposure to the sun, and adorned here and there with old nicks and scars which depict a legacy of hardship. The signs are there right down to the man's fingers, which are thickly callused, albeit in places where a swordsman would regularly secure his grip about his weapon.
Above the thick neck which rises between his shoulders, there is a face which still bears youth, yet also carries with it a certain early maturity. A rather wise countenance for his time, perhaps. A strong jaw forms the frame for the canvas that is his visage, with scars dashed across the otherwise young face in dramatic fashion. The most prominent is a straight line across his nose, what looks to be a blow which could've killed him if it had been any closer. The blemish draws attention to his black eyes and matching hair, the straight length of which is tied up into a functional topknot.
The young man's strength is put to good use in his attire. He wears a suit of what is clearly samurai armor, though it's made more for function than fashion. A dense, sturdy alloy has been worked into segments of heavy red plate protecting his shoulders, chest, upper back, lower sides, and thighs. There is the further addition of plated gauntlets with black lining, shin guards, and a helmet and featureless face mask whe he so chooses to wear it. A tremendous scabbard slung across his back holds a nodachi, and at his waist, there are four sheathes containing separate katana. Amongst the blades, there are also pouches and what looks to be scroll tubes, though what they contain is less obvious. Completing his ensemble is a hooded red cape is emblazoned with the emblem of a black spear.

Ninja Journal
I watch the samurai, going off in their armor to do honorable battle against foes of the innocent, and I wish that I could join them. It isn't that I don't take pride in the place of my birth, but I feel as though I could do so much more. I'm old enough now to take up a sword and participate in the fighting, but father disagrees. Wait until you're eight, he says, and he'll allow it. Eight years is young, so I suppose that's fair, but it's still a little bit away.
When my studies end for the day, I train as hard as I can to ready my body for the future. Once again, father says manhood and the body it grants will come with time, but why wait when I can start now? It's not as though I get up to any good if I go roaming the village. I enjoy engaging in the other boys' challenges - they kind of target me because I'm so big - but it always ends in a brawl. They don't behave in a way I think of as honorable, and how can I be true to my bushido by knowingly heading into those situations?
Eight years old. It's so close! To tell the truth, I've indulged in one kind of training which has left me guilty. Late at night, when father is asleep, I've taken up his nodachi and practiced swinging it. He'd probably be surprised to know that I can already lift it.
This is a day of great pride for me. At eight years of age, young for this occasion, I have been accepted as a student of the Sanyari samurai. It's the first step into becoming a samurai myself, serving Lord Tenmei, and maybe even going out into the wide world to swear fealty to a village. There's so much to do before those things happen, though!
I'll admit, being a student is an honor, but it's not glorious. We sleep in barracks, and we wake early to train hard in the basic arts of the samurai. In trade, it's expected that we students perform all sorts of menial tasks for the samurai teaching us. I clean their armor and weapons (and I'd best hope I never so much as scratch them), the barracks and the training yards. I've served at times aboard ships, and that's where we're cabin boys, basically doing all of the same things on the waves.
Given another year, things changed some. I was always an early grower, but I grew bigger still around nine years. The samurai decided that I was big enough to start the real training, and I was so proud of that. Heavy weapons and armor, and at last, I could practice with the nodachi without having to feel guilt at sneaking off with father's! The samurai speak well of me, and that makes my heart swell.
Around my tenth birthday, I was given perhaps the best gift a Sanyari could be given. It was decided that my basic training was finished, and I was to be considered a soldier, rather than a student. The samurai jested and called me "The Bull" because of how big I was at my age, but I took it as a thing of praise. The greater the size, the better one can honor our traditions of using only the most formidable armor and weapons.
There was a time amidst my continued training when I was made the student of a dedicated samurai, Kuroyari Musashi-sama, whose tutelage it was my honor to receive. He was a hard master, but it was all intended to shape me into the best samurai I could be. We traveled near and far, and even took on missions by sea. Perhaps he saw me as a gifted Sanyari, because my time with him was interrupted by a rare change in plans.
Some of the Sanyari go to Kumogakure, where they study under the ninja and learn a bit about their jutsu. It's not our focus, but these samurai augment themselves with the knowledge. I was desired among their ranks as a Blackspear, and with regret, I parted ways with my master to go and truly live among foreign peoples for the first time. The people of Kumogakure were honorable and welcoming, so I can hardly complain.
What surprised me most is what they learned about me, after judging my aptitudes and deciding what sort of jutsu to train me in. Their chakra paper told them that I had an affinity to earth, but that wasn't where they saw the greatest talent. No, they saw the rare potential of a medical jutsu user. It was unexpected, but given that we Blackspear use the jutsu we learn to augment ourselves, I saw potential in learning to care for my body and the body of comrades. I wanted to start with something most practical, so I learned natural medicine.
I even noticed a little shock on the part of the Kumogakure ninja when I managed to pick up their Scroll Mastery technique. It's not that I had asked, exactly. I'd always practiced calligraphy in order to keep my swordsmanship refined, so all it took was mimicry of the seals they were inking onto paper. They experimentally had me channel chakra into those seals, and it worked! They called me a very "diverse fellow" and sent me home with praise on my progress, hoping that I would continue to learn.
I returned home and was able to report excellent news to the Blackspear who were expecting me. They were both surprised and pleased to learn of the unusual jutsu I'd learned while among the ninja of Kumogakure. Now, I was both a devoted practitioner of Kuroyari techniques and a fairly worldly student of foreign arts. So far as they were concerned, I was ready to take the final step.
At the age of fourteen, with the body of a man older than I truly was, I bowed down before Lord Tenmei per our traditions. He named me a samurai and gifted me with two things: a suit of practical, heavy red samurai armor fashioned from our special alloy, and a fine nodachi to go with my collection of katana. However, it was Lord Tenmei's wish that I not rush to swear fealty to a hidden village. He instead bid that I travel the wide world, doing honorable deeds in the name of the Sanyari and Kuroyari, and that I take my time in choosing where I offer an oath of loyalty. Perhaps I never would, but so long as I was learning and working to honorable ends, he would be pleased.
That's been the way of it ever since. I've ventured alone to every hidden village, met all manner of peoples, and come to respect the unique qualities of each land. When I visit a hidden village, I believe they expect that my customs will be different, but I do my best to respect theirs in turn. It's only the honorable thing to do as a guest, after all. Sometimes, I even find the opportunity to learn something new from the ninja. We Kuroyari aren't ninja, of course, so these opportunities are to be valued.
I hope that my deeds do credit to my name, and that Lord Tenmei will hear of them. Perhaps he'll see fit to name me a captain, and if I should be greatly successful in deed and word, a commander. I've always been a large man, both in body and in my aspirations, and I see no reason not to reach for the zenith of status among the samurai.
