Zaruji was born in the Land of Fire. His parents always wanted more for him so when the Village Hidden in the Leaf was formed, they took advantage and moved, leaving their old farmhouse behind and everything in the life that Zaruji knew would change.
He was very capable and showed great promise when he trained with the Senju Clan, who took him in and under the preface of unity, trained him even though he was not a Senju. When the Academy was first built, Zaruji was already signed up for the first class. So when he did an evaluation exam, he passed with flying colors. His aptitude for learning was very high, and his chakra control was above that of most others. He achieved the rank of Genin at a little of an early age of eleven. When he graduated from the Academy. That is when he had also met one of his best friends, Senju Kanatar.
For the next couple years, along with rigorous training for himself and missions with his team, Zaruji learned the skills that were a necessity for a Chuunin. Water walking and Tree walking. Along the way he also learned he had an affinity for Earth Style Ninjutsu. He added that to his training regimen and even got a few Earth Ninjutsu under his belt, and that became his main arsenal when it came to combat.
Something else of note, Zaruji showed great promise in the sensory department. It wasn't until two years after he became a Genin that it was realized by his former team leader that Zaruji had the ability to sense chakra to a good extent. Zaruji had only slightly realized it was a passive trait, but at that time, he honed it and it became another second nature to him sensing chakra, even up to a chuunin level of sensory perception.The sensory abilities Zaruji had learned for himself helped him greatly in the next couple years. As the race with a good friend of his, Senju Kanatar, got heated and they both closed in on attaining the rank, Zaruji spent a lot of his time training his earth ninjutsu and his sensory jutsu. So in case it came down to combat, his friend could not hide from him for very long!
It wasn't very long before both of them had attained Chuunin through the examinations. Their team made it through the first round successfully, making stellar grades. Even though Zaruji was very willing to continue on, he suffered an unexpected injury right before the brink of success. With that major setback, he limped his way to the finish line and could not finish. From his abilities as a useful part of a team, and the knowledge that comes from such abilities, Zaruji was promoted to the rank of Chuunin even without their team making it to the final round. And now, Zaruji has departed from the traditional team as a fully fledged Chuunin to begin a life on his own as a Shinobi, either to lead a team, be a member of a new team, or something totally unexpected. Only time will tell.

Personality

Zaruji is very geared towards duty and loyalty towards the village. One of his favorite past times is carving wood figurines. Around his apartment, one could find all sorts of small figures, very well crafted and smooth surfaced. Least favorite food is seafood, for he is very allergic to shellfish. But give him a nice strip of ribs slathered in barbecue sauce, and he's in heaven.
Conversation with him is usually one-worded answers unless it's about duty, in which case someone might get a few more words out of him, but not much.

Appearance

Zaruji wears the standard Konohagakure green chuunin vest over blue coveralls. He has white forearm and shin protectors with black sandals.
His physical attributes include White-grey hair, silver-grey eyes, and a lean build. The black mask over his lower face covers his nose, mouth, cheeks, chin, jaw, and neck. So really the only things showing are his eyebrows and eyes and temples, since his forehead protector covers his forehead, which is itself turned to his left, leaving the tied ends hanging by his right ear.

The story behind his mask is simple. When he and his parents moved to Konohagakure while it was first formed by Hashiramako and news spread throughout the Land of Fire, he donned the mask and kept it on at all times, never choosing to reveal his face below the bridge of his nose and eyes. Noone knows why, other than him, and he doesn't talk about it, keeping to himself especially around people who specifically ask about it or threaten to take it off of him. He finds himself keeping company with those who don't ask about it more often than not.

The first day of school in the academy. It was nothing like anything Zaruji had ever seen. He absolutely loved it. Structured classes and schedules. A learning curve that he was the cusp of. Well, other than one other student. That Senju that was also one of the brighter ones. Well, they two were probably the best two. Might as well either make friends with him and make this easy on myself, or make an enemy and end up hating myself for not just introducing myself. I hope he doesn't make fun of my mask, too.
Zaruji's life at school wasn't the easiest. He got the occasional picking by other students about his mask, and his lack of ability in any specific area other than ninjutsu was also given a few jibes. When it came to the test, he passed with flying colors. He was never the loud or very voiced student, but still voiced his thoughts on occasion. When he spoke the first time, several of the other students believed it was another student who asked the question, and not Zaruji.

It's the last day of school, but the journey has just started. I'm so glad me and Kanatar both got onto the same team. At least we work well together. A lot of these other students- well, genin now- don't understand that we are starting today the possibility of going on missions that could kill us. Yeah, not so much today, but further down the road, we could, and someday will… die.
After the graduation, Z and his parents went to get food, though he did not eat. After they encouraged him to take off the mask, he politely excused himself and took his meal with him so he could eat in private. After that, his parents never again asked about his mask, but had the solemn wish to see his face once more before the possibility of never seeing him again. He promised them that if he ever died while on a mission or during duty, that he would have an open casket and would not wear his mask.

Upon entering the Chuunin exams with the other two in his team, Zaruji was very solemn. Even though he hadn't ever been known to play such as the other youth his age did, it felt like he was moving to a more adult stage in his life. And even the lack of childhood hit him that he hadn't ever played outside to a great extent, and that training had taken up much of his time past his woodcarving.
During the exams, Z ended up getting injured beyond ability to complete the exams, no matter if he had scrolls or not. His teammates forwent the third round, and upon finding him, returned him to safety. Loyalty like that, he found out, is hard to come by. Though they did not make it to the third round of the exams, their teamwork and efforts led village leadership to believe in them strongly enough that they were still promoted to the rank of Chuunin, and after that point, they all went their separate ways to either lead a team, be an individual unit that could be assigned to a team at a moments notice, or other endeavors fit for a Chuunin within Konohagakure.

During the war, Zaruji was best suited as a tracker and sentry for maintaining a continuous watch during waking hours alongside other sensory shinobi to alert others when a foreign force was approaching, and alerted the guard sentries of any chakra levels entering or exiting the basecamp unless otherwise informed they had groups moving in and out of the area, and given specific times of when that would be happening, and report all activity to the Jounin in charge of the watch.
He didn't see much action, or any at all for that matter. Though it was a boring job, Zaruji did it to the best of his abilities. Even continuing a round-the-clock operation by himself for a twenty-six hour period while others were supporting the combat troops during a large battle at that encampment to be on the lookout for enemy reinforcements. After which he was relieved of his post by the oncoming fresh reinforcements direct from Konoha, he was taken from the front lines to help with paperwork for the duration of the war, which wasn't long afterward. His dutiful efforts also got him an offer for a weekend pass which he respectfully declined, saying '..the war is far too important, and I know what I trained for, and it wasn't a vacation while others are fighting.' So for the next couple weeks he was an assistant clerk for a supply depot sending out resupply units to front line combat areas. After the war, he took a week long vacation to go make sure his family was alright. After which he returned to training, not wanting to let himself 'get behind' as he calls it.
