Background

When Katen Yamamoto was three years old he threw a tantrum in the streets of Iwagakure. It was one of many of the tantrums he threw when he was younger, and the cause of it has been forgotten, but the consequences were great. By chance, a nearby sensor-nin detected the slight emissions of chakra coming from young Yamamoto. The emissions were slight, yet still more than what a normal villager should be capable of, especially a child. Yamamoto was immediately tested and it was determined he would enter the academy and then the Explosion Corps of Iwagakure, for his chakra nature was of the Explosion nature, a kekkei genkai found among various families of the Land of Earth.
In his years in the academy Yamamoto rebelled against his predestined fate. He hated being told what he was going to be and what he was going to do. He often broke school supplies and would vandalize academy property. But the people of Iwagakure are stubborn, and no amount of bad behavior would be rewarded with expulsion from his fate. Upon "graduating" from the academy, Yamamoto was placed in a dormitory of the Iwagakure Explosion Corps.
In the Iwagakure Explosion Corps Katen Yamamoto was a genin only in title. He was not sent on missions because he was not trusted to follow orders. Even when he decided to try and make better of himself and follow the rules his trainers would suspect it a ruse. Begrudgingly, Yamamoto resigned himself to his fate and decided that if he had to be a member of the Explosion Corps that he would take pride in himself. Yamamoto spent over a year of hard physical training to harden his body to make it safe for him to be near explosions and speed enhancing ninjutsu training to help him close on his enemies. During this time he did his best to suppress his natural rebelliousness and follow orders. After more than a year Yamamoto was allowed to go on missions. When asked about his change of heart, his saying became, "By embracing my fate I've discovered freedom."
Yamamoto's proudest mission began as a simple D-rank mission. He and his team were to search the mountains overlooking a river for an old woman's dog which had gone missing. The dog had gotten lost in the past and the area was close to Iwagakure, so there was little thought of danger. It was discovered that the dog had been killed by a band of thugs to silence it. These thugs had heard of a shipment of valuables coming across the river via a bridge down the slopes from the mountain from where they were camping and had filled a cart with blasting powder and aimed it down a track towards the bridge that they might destroy the bridge to cut off the escape of the shipment as they cornered and robbed it.
Yamamoto's team had arrived just in time to see the shipment coming across the bridge below and engage the thugs on the mountain above. A second group of thugs hid in the bushes below ready to spring their trap. As they fought one of the thugs pushed the cart full of blasting powder down the mountain. None of Yamamoto's team-mates were in a position to stop the cart or hit it with a ranged attack to stop it from crashing into the caravan below and exploding, likely causing the death of numerous merchants. Yamamoto, being a close-ranged fighter, would not be the ideal choice for stopping such a thing, but without a second thought he body flickered to the cart and hit it with a kick charged with exploding chakra. He did so just in the nick of time, igniting the blasting powder and blowing the cart apart before it could leave the bushes and destroy the bridge. Unfortunately Yamamoto was in the center of the explosion.
The second group of thugs were also in the nearby bushes, but were not nearly so close to the exploding cart as Yamamoto. Most of them were knocked out and a few of them suffered serious injuries. Yamamoto was blown by the concussive force over the road, and when his team-mates arrived they saw that his clothes had been much damaged but Yamamoto himself had managed to use his training in Iron Body Taijutsu to shield himself from the brunt of the damage. He was injured, but not dead, and still healthy enough to say, "So that's what it feels like I'm glad I'm on our side." His team-mate said, "I thought Iron Body Style was supposed to save you from close-range explosions." Yamamoto replied, "Relatively."
After the mission stopping the attack on the merchants Yamamoto was allowed to challenge for Chuunin Rank. He succeeded. While others expected him to return to his regiment at the Explosion Corps, Yamamoto began to spend most of his time traveling and wandering around the Land of Earth. Years of rebelling against what he was told he would be, and then years of working to fit into what others wanted him to be had exhausted his pride and spirit. His village elders recognized this and he was given a special mission that only a few Iwagakure nin receive: He was to travel around the continent and sell Iwagakure contracts to those in need. Of course this was a formality, as the requests would still need to be delivered to Iwagakure, but Yamamoto saw it as an opportunity to help those in need and an opportunity to travel the world in search of his true self. The unstated mission, of course, is for him to keep tabs on the areas and levels of activity of other ninja villages, but what better way to test a market than to have someone out selling to the market?

Because he is honest and straightforward and he is not elitist; he will work with samurai, ninja, or peasants. He is simple and hard working and good for a wide variety of uses. His strength is his dependability. His weakness is his lack of focus.
Yamamoto is boisterous, funloving, friendly, and willing to share not only his own experiences but the experiences of others. He is most honest when talking about the things he loves and he is the least honest when selling things or competing with others.
Kemari being Yamamoto's favorite game is a telling quality. Kemari is non-competitive, cooperative, and physically active.
Appearance
A young man in his late teens with ochre coloured skin. He is tall and muscular. His eyes are opal. He wears a dark red vest open in the front and dark red pants which are baggy, but brown wrappings cover the shins and calfs of the pants and keep them tight to the skin. Brown tabi cover the feet. Around his waist a thick bright yellow sash is tied to leave a pair of foot long tails hanging, and a matching yellow bandana tied in a skull cap covers his hair and bears an Iwagakure forehead protector. From the edges of his bandana spills thick shoulder-length black hair.
