"Don't make fun of it! Don't destroy it! Don't cheapen it! That one thing everyone has that they won't give up."
Background
Maito Kyo is a young man from a long line of martial artists, Shinobi, and all of whom have the misfortune of being unable to mold chakra into Ninjutsu or Genjutsu; or at the very least will never employ the radical powers of the elements to their full extent. The Maito’s have a saving grace though in the world of Shinobi: they are renowned Taijutsists who have the potential of unlocking the eight Chakra Gates.
Kyo, depending on your outlook, was either cursed or blessed at birth; yet the Shinobi around him would have him thinking the former. Matter of fact there wasn’t a time in Kyo’s life some Genin, Chuunin, or Jounin didn’t remind Kyo of his faults, flaws, or failures. Very few acknowledge Shinobi who cannot succeed or exceed in the use of Ninjutsu or Genjutsu; these Shionbi are little more than burdens to the Shinobi elite. Yet Kyo has proven them all wrong time and again.
The youth's life has been one of constant hardship and struggle; always having to prove himself to teammates, superiors, and the like can grow tiresome, and especially when these same individuals call themselves your ally. Few recognize the strength a specialist brings that isn’t throwing around fire, water, earth, wind, lighting, or illusions. But fewer still can deny being knocked senseless, at least in truth, when Kyo steps in the ring with them. The Taijutsist may not be a genius born with gifts many pray for or wish upon their children, but Kyo was born with a gift all the same and one most fail to recognize: determination and perseverance. Kyo has an unwavering resilience to accomplish tasks, endure hardships, and push himself beyond his limits.
Kyo’s Genin years were by and large a set of failures as he struggled to preform and meet the expectations or standards of his fellow classmates or instructors. The Academy wasn’t at all kind to Kyo, and while his teachers were patient his fellow students did little to encourage or praise the Maito for any successes or outstanding achievements he earned. Kyo fought and scraped for every inch he gained up until graduation, and where other students could afford to slack off due to inheritances, or natural born talent, the Maito had to diligently pursue the goals set before him to earn the acknowledgement of those who call themselves his peers. Unfortunately due to the standards of the Academy Kyo didn’t graduate his first time through and was held back; being forced to focus on his weaknesses until meeting the satisfaction of his professors.
The years leading up to his Chuunin exam however were fraught with an entirely set of different trials and tribulations. Kyo trained daily, and by daily I do mean daily; to the exclusion of all else but his Genin duties, as Kyo literally forsake friendships to become something better than his heyday. Hours were spent under the instruction of either his father, mother, or sister preparing him for the dangers of combat and strengthening his resolve to face down the challenges the exams would bring. Hand in hand Kyo refined his knowledge of the Strong Fist and Maito philosophies; while keeping an eye keenly on his studies of the world and the Shinobi. When his time came the individuals assembled for his team were of the same kind of pigheadedness and bigoted mentality of those that plagued him in his Academy days; and of which cost him his first exam, history seemingly repeating itself, and of which caused Kyo great strife. Yet in that failure Kyo found his inner self and took to his passions like no other until the day finally came and he stood in the arena with fist held high to the cheers and elations of the crowd for a job well done.
In this legacy Maito Kyo was able to perform his duties as not only Shinobi to Konoha but to all those who live in the Land of Fire. His story is only just the begging too and where Kyo can go from here is anyone’s guess.
Clan
The Maito Clan is largely based in the Land of Fire. They are a group of men and women who have dedicated themselves to the pursuit of martial arts and perfecting the Konoha Strong Fist so that the discipline might become a recognized technique throughout the world.
The men of the Maito clan are usually the heirs of the Konoha Strong Fist and the mantra of protecting those too weak to defend themselves or important to the Maito, but more and more women are being encouraged and have been rising in the ranks of the small Clan; taking leading roles as students and teachers of the Konoha Strong Fist.
Any Maito that is trained in how to open their Gates is forbade from ever using the power for personal gain or in harming others for petty or simple grievances; and of those who abuse the privilege of being taught how to harness such might finds themselves shortly after being punished severely (if discovered) or excommunicated from the Clan. Obviously the Maito is allowed duals of honor and respect; yet opening the Gates is expected only in the most dire of situations or in mutual tests of strengths (such as the Chuunin exams) and never simply to teach someone a lesson in humility or for selfish desires.
Maito Masters of the Konoha Strong Fist and Chakra Gates are expected to pass their secrets onto aspiring and worthy students; regardless if they are Maito or not. The Maito believe strongly in sharing wisdom, so as to better the world as a whole, and it is in this hope that their altruism, work ethics, and teachings spread far beyond the Lands of Fire.
The Clan is run by those who have shown three distinct qualities: being sound of mind, body, and soul. A Maito who has mastered all his Chakragates, perfected the Konoha Strong Fist, passed on his talents and skills onto a worthy student, and taught the Maito philosophies is seen befitting of leading the Clan. In many ways the Maito Clan can be seen as a highly dedicated martial arts school, and tarnishing the name for selfish interests is not tolerated. Humiliating others is not the Maito way. Yet the Maito are hardly passive, they understand the Shionbi world is fraught with dangers and violence that will rob innocents of their lives and materials, and in such instances the Maito believe in destroying that which seeks only to harm others, so that the good in the world might flourish and survive. The Clan is obviously not without its failings and those students who forsake the philosophies of the Maito have earned the monarchs of Warring Fists: individuals who believe purely in might makes right.
The five precepts the Maito Clan try to encompass are the following: Dedication, Patience, Perseverance, Empathy, and Sympathy.
A favorite saying of the Maito that encompasses their morals is as follows, “Knowing is not enough we must apply. Willing is not enough we must do.”
The Maito Clan’s symbol is the imagery of the Konoha lotus blossom blooming twice.

Personality
Kyo is easy going, laid back, and at times carefree. He prefers to talk things through if at all possible, and only ever resorts to his fists when the situation has become an uncontrolled mess of violence. He’s quick to listen and not one to act too rashly, as Kyo is still after all human.
Kyo tries to help when and where he can, despite his obvious disadvantages in life. He’s easy to approach too, but perhaps not the best at giving advice, as his worldly experience isn’t exactly that of a matured adult. He is still by and large a teenager. Yet shows wisdom despite his age.
In the end Kyo certainly won’t be everyone’s favorite, but he tries his best to live by the standards his forefathers have past time and again from father to son, and using their strength in the protection of others.

Appearance

![]() |
A young man, with shaggy brown hair, amber eyes, tanned skin, standing at five feet four inches, and appearing to be in his late teens enters your vision.
This young man before you, coming to a full height of five feet four inches, is the culmination of hard work and rigorous training. His body is what many would consider to be the pinnacle of athleticism, and every muscle on him is either toned or well defined. The youth’s skin is lightly tanned and almost devoid of any hair, or is trimmed neatly. His appearance suggests a healthy diet and regular exercise, and more than likely has caused a few heads to turn to take in that physique. He moves with a confident stride, appears approachable, wearing a quiet expression, and has a friendly disposition. His eyes are bright, hair shaggy, and he sports a sharp nose just above full lips. The young man’s face belies his age, making him seem younger than he really is, and is free of any facial hair.
His attire is loose fitting, dark, and practical, and when he isn’t wearing his uniform or training gear the young man can be found in black slacks, a black button up, white shirt, and red sneakers. A jade seed hangs just below his clavicle held by twine around his neck. A yin-yang pin is always on a collar, lapel, or gear.
Fresh scars plague the young man almost daily that find a bandage of some sort taped over the wound or wrapped in gauze.
Ninja Journal
Father says I’m ready to start training to become a Chuunin. I’ve only just begun to grasp the basics of the Konoha Strong Fist. I wonder if I’ll ever be able to live up to the Maito name? Can I truly become the strongest disciple the world has ever seen? I would like to prove that like the Hyuga’s Gentle Fist the Maito’s Strong Fist is just as worthy of a goal.
Kamizuru Kioko, she is beautiful, strong, and a complete mystery. She seems like such a laid back woman. I wonder if she is into guys like me? I hope she doesn’t play for the other team; that would really suck. I think building up the courage to ask her out will take me longer than actually opening any of my Chakra Gates; and that is saying something about myself. No, I can’t be hard on myself, I have to believe in my abilities.
But between me and you she has some really nice…(the characters become gibberish after this point and what seems to be blood stains the pages).
Countless hours training, countless days spent, and countless failures. I wonder if I’ll ever open these Gates like my Family or really be just the black stain on the Shinobi world. Why am I ridiculed for not being able to perform certain disciplines? Should I in turn deride them for being substandard martial artists? No, that is not the Maito way. I must persevere if I am to unlock the potential of my Clan.
Back to training. I’ll do 1000 pushups, and if I can’t do 1000 pushups I’ll run twenty miles, and if I can’t run twenty miles I’ll do 500 sit ups.
I finally did it: became a Chuunin. It wasn’t easy and the opponents I faced in the exams seemed to have it out for me. I suspect they didn’t like the fact a Shinobi with no talent for Ninjutsu out witted them in combat with just Taijutsu. I hope the Maito clan can stand proud as I feel an overwhelming sense of accomplishment proving anyone who has slighted me wrong.
Perseverance, patience, determination, empathy, and sympathy have all served me well. I just hope if I'm placed in charge of any Genin I lead them correctly. I think I'm more anxious about failing anyone I may lead than actually elated about advancing to Chuunin. I guess the saying is true: be careful what you wish for.
Relationships
Name | Relationship | Notes |
---|---|---|
Maito Mototsugu | Father | Head of the Maito, Jounin to Konohagakure, and a level headed man who tries his damnedest to do right by family and Clan. He's a boisterous, hotblooded, terse, loud, loveable, and a stubborn individual. When Mototsugu has time to train Kyo he literally puts his son through hell; most parents in the village assume Mototsugu is in actuality abusing his child, but the reality is that Kyo's father is just putting him through a form of intense and extreme training. |
Maito Saori | Mother | Mother to Kyo, she runs the day to day affairs in the absence of Mototsugu, and is a master of the Konoha Stong Fist. She is a warm woman who is strict and fair in her dealings with the Clan and outsiders, but a tad harsher on Kyo, as she consistently pushes him to be better. |
Maito Honoka | Sister | Elder sister, next in line to lead the Clan, and who is also a Jounin of Konohagakure. She is often depicted as conservative and withdrawn, but still emulates the Maito philosophies nonetheless. Honoka exemplifies more the rationale and work ethics of the Clan than their penchant for empathy. |

Kamizuru Kioko | Crush & Fellow Class Man | Kioko has been a huge crush of Kyo's ever since the Academy, and that attraction hasn't diminished through the years. He hasn't openly confessed his interest, but the fire that burns for her is as strong as ever. The real question remains: why? |
Sarutobi Akinori | Fellow Class Man | A fellow student through the Academy and one who passed onto Chuunin roughly the same time Kyo did. Kyo doesn't known the man personally, but he really hates how much Akinori smokes, eats, and drinks; seeing his lifestyle as unhealthy and self-serving. He respects the man's heritage but not the man himself. |
Inuzuka Takeo | Fellow Class Man | Kyo respects Takeo for having the courage to have a tailed beast sealed within him, but is highly cautious around the fellow class man and Chuunin, as he fears such awesome power and how in the wrong hands such might can be miss used or abused. |
Uzumaki Tsukino | Fellow Chuunin | Tsukion is an oddity in Kyo's eyes, and doesn't know really why the Uzumaki made arrangements for the woman to be accepted as a Konoha Shinobi. Rumors say she and the Hokage are an item. |
Uzumaki Haruka | Fellow Chuunin | Haruka is cold and off putting and Kyo can't figure her out. She's extremely beautiful, but a bit out of his reach or so Kyo thinks. Their relationship simply is one of business as they do not know one another. |
Inuzuka Kaido | Fellow Chuunin | Kyo respects the Inuzuka clan, perhaps because they are the ones to kick the least amount of mud on him for having next to no talent with Ninjutsu; or he just admires their style of Taijutsu. In turn he respects Kaido's ability to analyze situations and formulate strategies based on exploited weaknesses Kaido perceives. |
Akiyama Kenta | Fellow Class Man | Kyo has always held a silent respect for Kenta; despite his frail frame the man pushes himself to be better even if he'll never have a strong grasp of Taijutsu. Kyo also secretly admires Kenta's abilities and aptitude to heal instead of harm. He is however creeped out by Kenta's hobbies and interests. |

KONOHA STRONG FIST | Taijutsu | The Gouken, or 'Strong Fist', style has been accepted as the official Taijutsu style of the Konoha Ninja Academy. The basics of the style are taught as the foundation on which Konoha Students learn the art of hand to hand combat. In being a characteristic fighting style, the purpose of it is to cause external damage and break bones. It is the exact opposite of Gentle Fist which is used mainly by the Hyuga Clan. This style of fighting involves smashing your opponent, combining speed and power to achieve devastating results against the human body. With the infusion of the practitioner's spirits into their techniques, they can create new avenues and more ways to overwhelm their opponents. |
FIRE RELEASE | Ninjutsu | A school dedicated to the manipulation, creation, and harnessing of flame incarnate. |
Kyo shines, rightly so, in the practical arts of hand to hand combat, physical feats that defy the mind, and acrobatics that make many envious. Yet his strengths do come at a price: a social life. Kyo spends hours a day training regularly that it has left him with little time to do much else but his assigned duties. Granted his passions are the martial arts and perfecting his Taijutsu is always a worthy pursuit; even if that expense costs him friends. |
Kyo’s failings lie in the application and molding of chakra and the inability to form the necessary seals to employ the fantastic and deadly arts of Ninjutsu or Genjutsu; not for a lack of trying mind you. Kyo has desperately, even to date, tried using the many releases taught and known, but at best has only been able to create below-average effects that don’t augment his own prowess in some way. Yet his weaknesses are not Kyo’s only defining characteristics, and even if he’ll be little more than a Genin in respects to Ninjutsu that won’t stop him from trying again and again. Sometimes in life goals aren’t meant to be reached, and simply exist to drive us on to be better than we were. |
