Background
Mitsuhara Matsuri is an orphan of the Kirryu Clan, who doesnt know her true heritage. She was taken in by a matron who owned a brothel/geisha house, and used the funds from such to support war orphans. Those that weren't adopted grew up and found their own ways in life. But a surprising number of them stuck around into adulthood, working in the 'entertainment business' or as protectors for those who had looked after them (and for new orphans who were rescued).
Unfortunately, this town, where Matsuri made her home and where she worked, was not spared the endless violence of the Clan Wars. Because someone had been tipped off that some of the customers were ninja, an attack was staged, and the whole town came under attack. Many were killed, or kidnapped. Matsuri herself, who had been studying Medical Ninjutsu in order to help attend to the children at the orphanage and the workers at the brothel, was tortured, had both of her arms cut off for daring to heal enemies of the attacking Clan, and was left for dead.
She watched the only home she had ever known burn to the ground, and grim fates befall those around her. But she did not die
Matsuri was skilled enough with Medical Ninjutsu to reattach her own arms using only her Chakra control and her teeth to wield a needle and sutures. It took months before they were fully healed and usable again, and during that time, she tried to both get away from that place, and track down anyone who had escaped. As the years passed, Matsuri gradually gave up the search. The Clan Wars may have been over, but war orphans were as prevalent as ever. She decided she was going to set up her own inn: Her own safe haven for displaced children and wanderers in need of sanctuary.
And she would not make the mistake of having it open and accessible to everyone. Instead, she would learn Genjutsu, Fuinjutsu, and Ninjutsu that would let her control who could find the place, who could leave, and to prevent any more danger from being brought to her doorstep. As she has spent all this time looking for the perfect place, building the inn, and recovering from injuries, her jutsu repetoire and combat abilities are not very good. What she has learned has mainly been to keep herself safe, by detecting danger before it finds her, and being able to heal injuries.
But she hopes to eventually gain the power to protect as many wayward souls as she can. Preferably not through violence, but through sending those inclined towards violence away from the innocent.
Personality
Matsuri is a compassionate individual, especially protective of women and children, but generally dislikes seeing anyone hurt. She avoids violent conflict whenever possible, preferring words, or even fleeing, and fighting only in self defense. When defending others, however, she may go further than that. While she is not much of a fighter, she is willing to put herself between a hostile individual and their target and take the blows herself that were intended for others.
While she has an interest in medicine, she cultivated this in order to help others, and is not much of a scientist or medical researcher. She prefers traditional medicine and simple methods when there isn't a need for something else. Relying on her own abilities instead of what she can do as a normal person isn't her way. To others, this may seem strange… After all, why bother developing jutsu and Chakra control and other powers if one isn't going to use them? Matsuri's view is that she develops these in the hope that she does not HAVE to use them, but that if the time ever comes when she has no other choice, that she is prepared.
This serves another purpose, in ensuring people underestimate her. If they don't consider her a threat, then she draws less attention and trouble. And if she ever DOES need to deal with trouble, no one expects her to be capable of anything significant until it's too late.
Appearance
Matsuri is a mature woman with long, sleek black hair that has a slight sheen in the light. She's very pale, with narrow, purple-hued eyes, and thick eyelashes. She frequently wears lipstick and eyeshadow, and has a demon-like mask ornament in her hair. Carrying a smoking pipe is not uncommon either, though she doesn't seem to smoke any form of tobacco. While her wardrobe varies, she typically wears a dark-colored kimono that drapes dangerously low in front, and barely hangs onto her shoulders. A burgundy obi with an odd spiralling clasp, like a lotus flower, is cinched about her mid-section, making her figure appear even more extreme than it actually is.
At times she may seem to coast or glide across the floor rather than walking upon it… But that's just an optical illusion caused by how long her kimono is. Probably.

One of the most precious things in my life is my daughter. My other children are also very, very special to me. I can not put one above another. But I love Anzu very much, and want to protect her from everything that could hurt her. |

Civil Servant |
A man who agreed readily to the idea of an orphanage. Enough that his willingness was almost worrying. Perhaps I just had the wrong idea about politicians. Or maybe he's not like the others. But now he wants to take my Anzu away, to teach her to protect herself, as well as to protect him. And it might actually be the better option. Because I can't guard her as I'd like to against ninja enemies… Or her own past. I'm not sure I trust him. But I may have to rely on him for now. |

Ninja Journal
I went to see the Great Todoroki Shrine Race. It was exciting though I could see very little of it personally. I was mainly there to see if there were any orphans in need of a safe home with food and medical care, as well as to hopefully obtain a meeting with the Daimyou of the Land of Tea. I wanted to propose the construction of an orphanage. I was expecting to have to convince him. Maybe even to have to resort to… Feminine wiles. But he was surprisingly receptive. Almost suspiciously so. I wonder if I am fortunate to have chosen him, or whether I chose someone whose motives I should have scrutinized more closely.
Either way, it appears he is willing to make this place and give a safe place for orphans to live… And that is why I went there originally. I'll just have to hope he is as good as his word.
A peaceful night at Inn ~The Mist~ was interrupted by hostilities from some of our patrons. Kumogakure ninja in the area for some reason or another assaulted my daughter. Anzu almost lost her cool and fought back out of fear, but thankfully Shuuren-dono stepped in to stop them. I'm glad he did so. I don't know what might have happened to Anzu if she'd actually lashed out. She has great hidden potential, but little training. Against real ninja, I think she would have only made herself enough of a threat to get her… Badly hurt.
We're going to speak to Shuuren-dono later tonight, after everyone else is in bed.
Shuuren-dono had some surprising and disturbing things to say about my daughter's background, her birth family, and the situation he is in. But he also promised that he'd protect her, and teach her how to protect herself. I can't shake the suspicions I had about him in the past. It seems like everything he's offering is exactly what we need. There has to be some other ulterior motive in mind here. There has to be. Because all of my past experiences in life have taught me you can't trust strangers. If it's too good to be true, it probably is.
…But this is what we need right now. Can I afford to turn away his generosity and risk her being hurt when those Cloud Ninja come back? Can I afford to let my daughter go off with someone I barely know just because he says he can help her?
I'm not sure what to do. But I want to trust in Anzu's choice, whatever it may be.
It's been weeks since Anzu left. Her absence is sorely felt. We couldn't part without tears. I hope she's doing alright. From the messages I've received it seems she's getting along well with her training. She's growing stronger and it even seems as though she's recovering some of her memories. But if her past is what the Cloud and Shuuren-dono say it is, I'm not sure that's a good thing. At least it might give a hint of who her biological family are.
I just hope that finding that out doesn't mean she'll be leaving me for good. No matter what, I'm still her mother.
At least the other children are here. Without them, I don't know what I'd do.

Awake The Snake Pt. 2 |
November 15, 2016 |
"Shuuren-dono has detailed what he knows of Anzu and her past. That she killed a Genin of Kumogakure, for reasons unknown, and is considered a Missing Ninja of that Village. She may also be a member of the Hebisuuhai Clan. He wants to take her away to train her and help her recover her memories. She may be safer with him. But even so… Sending my daughter away with someone I barely know just feels irresponsible and dangerous. Is this really for the best? Perhaps I should let Anzu decide." |

Awake the Snake Pt. 3 |
December 9, 2016 |
"Anzu has made her choice, albeit with difficulty. She wants to know what her past is, and to become strong enough to defend herself. There's no guarantee that those Cloud Ninja won't come back, and it's unlikely they'll have stopped chasing after her in the future, when I might not be around. Besides, I think at her fullest potential, she is stronger than I am. I still have the rest of our family to look after too, so it's not like I'm lonely… But I'll miss her so much." |
