With their homes and businesses located near the tip of the mainland peninsula that's traditionally and typically under the domain of the Land of Water, the Nakajima family was either named ironically or in a period when their connections to the land were at a higher tide. Sadako is the first in a long while to show the capacity for shinobi training, and while her name doesn't single her out as a genin of interest, her talent for ninjitsu and the mindset for medicine does.

While it's not fair to say that Sadako was spirited away in the night from her loving family by more distant relatives that recognized her potential, it's not exactly wrong either. It's just that Sadako was happy to go, even if it meant a long period of sailing, marching, more sailing and then topped off with some marching to break up the monotony, off to Kirigakure in the care of a cousin she'd barely met in the whole five years she'd been living a happy childhood as the daughter of a shipping clerk.

Growing up in an almost 'cosmopolitan' atmosphere with the different exotic wonders her father would deal with day in, day out, as well as bringing home gave her a certain style that helped to keep her from getting lost amidst the students from more established clans and families with more outre quirks. Very important for when you're the kind of trainee ninja that hasn't developed as quickly physically as other classmates and your real worth is in the more subtle and intellectual pursuits of the trade. Between some slight problems developing her taijutsu and genjutsu and a marked ability in focus and concentration, she managed to be a solid B+ student. Hardly a shining star but also above the 'also-ran' students.

Even before graduating, in a by the numbers fighting ceremony that had her garroting a more well-rounded almost-shinobi, she was groomed for apprenticeship to the medical corps. Cleaning up and assisting the autopsies of returned or found bodies, cataloguing the different medical supplies, and even assisting in the ceremonial tooth-filing of potential Mist swordspeople, all wonderfully dovetailed with her interest in exploring the wider world as well as carefully noting it down.

It's all so wonderful, being a ninja! Exploring hidden secrets, finding all the places you're not supposed to be, BREATHING FIRE!! and cool things like that! Lots better than being a housewife or even a sailor like Taiki! It's even intellectually stimulating too, with so much that's either unexplored or simply taken for granted - hardly up to the more measured forms of knowledge the rest of the world has turned their traditional practices into. Everything's coming up Sadako; sure, it's a little damp and cold compared to sunny beaches and warm breezes back home in that other life, but that's no reason to feel down and blue, now is it?

Appearance

Not terribly impressive when it comes to height, this young teenager isn't short for her age, but she does have a slim build even for a kunoichi that's kind of gangly. All shoulders and elbows and knees, she sort of resembles a drunk stork at times when in motion; underneath the underneath there is a certain economy of motion and natural poise, however, that just takes time to grow into.
Sadako has a fringe of rusty-red auburn hair that's styled to a thick, nontraditional curtain around her head; her bangs are bobbed in a straight line across her forehead and reach just past her slim ears otherwise with an ironed-straight stiffness. Her faintly heart-shaped face has it's sharp points to it with her narrow chin, higher and starting to show cheekbones and slim, thin-bridged nose with a lemony-milky complexion that's clear with a 'too much time inside' pallid tint. At least her eyes are nice and bright in a jade green color, and slightly magnified from the round lenses set into a steel pince-nez frame that's kind of severe looking compared to her wider, pink-lipped habitual smile.
Maybe to make up for her body shape, she's picked out a set of clothes that's stiff and formal. Primarily she wears a long, dark blue coat with thin black braiding around the shoulders that leads to the full sleeves which her thin wrists poke out of; it buttons in a diagonal across her nascent chest with dull grey horn buttons. The coat reaches past her waist and comes to a stop a few inches below her knees, where it appears that underneath she's wearing a set of loose brown trousers. Her feet, at least, carry a more traditional set of open-toed black leather sandals to protect her heels and soles.
Around her neck and compensating for the lack of collar to her coat is the dark-blue band that supports her hitai-ite with the diagonal slashes of the mist showing clean and proud right below her chin. Supported from her waist is her only other real accessory, a thick belt that supports the light brown and bulky satchel which rests just at the small of her back.

He's quiet, smart, and great at his job, and everytime there was some new item that was about to be unloaded, we'd always get to see it when he brought it home first. Too bad he wasn't really a very physical guy, even Taiki was bigger than him by the time I left home, but he never let it bother him.
Terumi Sumire	Mom	She always tells the best stories at bedtime, and had a lot more jokes to tell than dad ever did. It's just a shame we never really got to meet any of her family growing up; I suppose most of them just weren't around any more, or living out in the islands.
Nakajima Taiki	Big Brother	Taiki's great, he never had that snotty 'oh look at me I'm so big and tough and have a whole three chest hairs, I'm way too cool for my lil sis' attitude that some of my friend's brothers had. Even when I still had trouble walking in straight lines he didn't mind watching after me when he was out with his friends. He always liked the sea, maybe he's finally gotten a berth on a ship by now.

-Spelunking: With so many little islands, the potential for nooks and crannies is nearly endless in Kirigakure. It's an interest sparked back when she was still young and adorable instead of young and slightly creepy like she is now; books, maps, journals, all that and more, from far flung places and even just stories told by the sailors and clerks in her seaport village grew her interest in exploration. As far as she's aware there're precious few systematic studies and expeditions done in Kirigakure, so she's hoping to be a trendsetter, too.

-Sketching: It fits in with spelunking and exploration. What use is going to all these interesting places if you don't keep notes? Her drawing is almost entirely artless and tilts towards realism, sketches that identify rather than immortalize and classify rather than enrapture. She does like drawing plants more than anything else though. They don't move around so much and throw off her whole work at the worst possible moment.

-Cooking: Beyond the traditional diet, all the different specialties and exotic spices more common to the marketplace of her home village than other places helped her grow up with less childish pickiness than some. It's kind of a pity that she didn't have more time to learn from her mother; her culinary experimentation is slow, painful, and hazardous when it incorporates native spices that may or may not be poisonous, explosive, or both.

Timeline

Age 5: Leave home.
Age 5, 1 month: First broken bone. It's an arm!
Age 7: Finally connect with a punch in sparring. I only dislocated my wrist, too.
Age 9: I get to help after training in the dissection rooms!
Age 10: One of the other students was either flirting with me or taunting me. Either way, he stopped doing that after I wired him to his bunk and kicked it out the door.
Age 12: Graduation day! The referee said I should get my jaw put back on before getting my picture taken.
