"Not every decision is so black and white. Sometimes there is a lot of grey."
His past was a lie. There is no guide to ensure the actions of the present. He alone will decide his future.
This is the story of a young boy who chose to join the shinobi life a little later than most. In his quest for survival he found a special ability that was hidden from him. In his quest for acceptance he found a life outside the boundaries set by the rest of the world. Now the question is what will he do with both of the things he's found?
Background
Pre Genin
Though Kanbei does not remember most of his early childhood, his father had always been quick to tell him that he was born in the grasslands of Kusagakure. His people were that of the Shikoku, a master smithing clan that originated from the Country now known as Kirigakure. His father even joked that the blades of the Seven Swordsmen were actually crafted by members who had left the Shikoku clan.
At the age of eight years old, Kanbei and his father Gerharu migrated, in a hurry from their home, to the recently formed country of Kumogakure. Geharu had enough ryo to build a small forge and the two made a life there. Things were not easy early on. Many of the children made fun of Kanbei for his crimson-red hair and overly pale skin. His father was also facing some issues. Geharu trained as a shinobi but was not trusted do to his questionable origin.
After a few years things calmed down and both were accepted into the village society. Kanbei did not attend the shinobi academy as others his age would have. It was a personal choice for Geharu. Instead, he showed the boy how to work the forge. Despite being a shinobi, Geharu spent most of his time in the forge. Thats where the true money was. A growing village needed weapons. More kunai were sold in a month than fish pulled from the sea. The village easily supported multiple forges. It was the start of a wealthy life style.
Gerharu started making long trips when Kanbei turned eleven years old. He made a total of six trips that year. Each time he left, he would leave behind a small crystal figurine of a large cat. For some reason these trips meant the forge no longer burned so hot. The irons had all been left to cool. Gerharu no longer seemed interested in smithing. Unfortunately Kanbei would not find out why. Shortly after turning twelve, Kanbei's father did not return home. All the boy had left of his father was a potrait with him and a white tiger.
This left Kanbei to fend for himself. There was plenty of money for him to live off of for a while, but he grew bored and lonely. The boy tried to work the forge, but his weapons were of substandard quality. He knew he could not sell them. After a few years, it occured to him that he could join the shinobi. There he would be able to learn more about the weapons and what he had been doing wrong. He hated failure. It was a trait picked up from his father.
Once he enrolled in the academy, he was easily one of the oldest students. There was some humility in watching kids half of his age perform jutsu he had issues with. Those children were not nice about it either. Often hot headed, the teachers had to seperate Kanbei from others on occassion. It was hard to compete with the Saito, Reizei and Yotsuki. Their clans all had something that made them special. Kanbei had nothing obvious to look forward to. At times it seemed like a lost cause, but Kanbei's hatred of failure caused him to continue on.
To his benefit, Kanbei's hard work paid off. After a single year, he graduated. Despite being average all around, Kanbei's teachers all noticed he seemed to be a natural with chakra control. He was easily able to manipulate earth through the Earthen Rain jutsu. Besides the hot headed nature of the boy, the teachers were not surprised by his lone wolf syndrome.
Post Graduation
A short time after graduating to Genin, Kanbei found he was able to manipulate crystals. Not only could he manipulate them but he could form them from thin air. At first he only practiced this form of jutsu in private. The secret was hard to keep. It would not be long before he was openly practicing his jutsu in the public training facility. There were multiple reactions to his style of jutsu and the force at which he used it. He received praise from Yotsuki Hiei for his "brutal" mentality when he showed him the Crystal Funeral Jutsu. On the opposite side he received heavy criticism from Katayama Hiroyasu for training with live jutsu.
Despite the actions of Yotsuki Hiei to make Kanbei feel welcome, there was an ever increasing unease to the boy's feelings. He felt secluded from the rest of the village. The only place that he seemed to thrive was at the gym. To be there though was to risk public beratement from Hiroyasu.
In one instance, Kanbei made an attempt to ask a cute girl for a spar. She informed him that she did not spar, then seemed to become rather cold towards him. So Kanbei went out on a ledge and made her a rose formed from crystal. It was the one ability he had that was unique. The girl handed it to another girl in front of him. He was not sure why it was so hard to make simple friends.
In his eyes, those that hailed from the three great clans of Kumogakure seemed to grow stronger very quickly. They also seemed to form a circle socially. Not many weeks past before feelings of being an outcast formed. During this time, Kanbei funded an expedition to the Kyuusen Crater. The goal was to find a new type of ore for his blacksmiths shop. The expedition would not find ore. Instead they found strange crystals that seemed to resonate with Kanbei's Shoton.
The Rogue Years
Feeling alone in the world, Kanbei decided one day to take the crystals he had found and move on. There was an entire world at his finger tips. He did not need the village anymore. They certainly had no need of him. All he needed was to go see the world. So he left on an expedition with the intent to never return. By the time the the authorities realized that he had not returned, he was quite a ways from where they would send the search party.
In the first few days on his own, he ran into a famous medical specialist. On a long shot request, he negotiated for the medic to perform a surgery on him that would implant the crystals into his body. The medic made the deal even better by making a few other alterations to his chakra network. Mainly the alteration of the signature he gave off to sensor nin. After that the two parted ways.
Kanbei spent a few months in the neutral zone. He was ever vigilant of his surroundings though. When it became obvious that there was a higher risk of running into Kumo shinobi operating there, he decided to relocate to the Land of Wind. The vast amount of desolate land made it the perfect place to escape. Eventually he settled in the capital city of Rakuen due to its seclusion even from the rest of the country. It was a hidden oasis in a land very few wanted to travel to. Now in his new home, he adopted the name Seishukuni Ginrei. He used the clan name to avoid any suspicion if anyone found out he could use Shoton. The name also made it possible to gain employment as a bartender at the world famous Akasaka Kikunoi.
Given the nature of the Akasaka Kikunoi, part of Ginrei's position was to procure goods of both legal and illegal nature for the high class clientele of the establishment. This he excelled at. The only thing better than his skill at getting people what they wanted, was what they paid him large sums of money to do it. The money bought the finest suits and an assortment of very expensive tattoos. He was living the good life for a while.
Though his earlier experimentation with unlocking the crystal implants had proven extremely powerful, it had also proven to have a very dangerous side effect. The more he used the crystals, the more his chakra would be corrupted. Though the effects seemed to be temporary, they were chaotic enough to land Ginrei in trouble on more than one occasion. At first it was a simple low life beating his unconscious date. Given Ginrei's temper, he activated the crystals. The chaotic chakra began to flow through to his brain. It was the equivalent of a black out. The next morning the papers reported the findings of a massacre. Pieces of at least one body had been found. They was not enough to identify how many bodies there had been or who the pieces belonged to. A few weeks down the road another massacre. The trend continued for a short time. The official body count varied by whom was telling the horror story of what they thought was happening. The truth was that no one knew the exact count. They only knew there was something killing people and it was on the loose.
Returning Home
As the heat began to rise in Rakuen, the strangest thing happened. A shinobi from Kumogakure, named Rise, walked into the Akasaka Kikunoi. She did not recognize Ginrei. The two talked for a bit. She had asked about information on a guy named Shikoku Kanbei. It seemed his old friend Yotsuki Hiei had replaced Reizei Ogo as the Raikage of the village.
Ginrei had been giving it some serious thought over the next few days. It was only a matter of time before someone figured him out. Who knows how long it would be before he left a witness. If the authorities found him out it would be bad. There was little doubt they would enlist the local shinobi village to capture him. Then he would be facing execution more than likely. If it was the black market gangs he so often worked with, things would likely escalate. He would also need to find new sources to procure things they readily had available. The picture seemed pretty clear. The time had come to return home.
The trip was not as bad as he had remembered. Before he knew it Ginrei was standing at the gates of the village. There was some uncertainty about how his return would be taken. He requested the guards send for the Raikage. There was a bit of surprise when the Raikage appeared and was over joyed to see him again. It was two friends who had not seen each other in over four years. There was a feeling there that Ginrei never felt before. It had never felt so good to be wrong. He left believing no one had cared. Here was a friend who welcomed him back with open arms. For a crime that he should have been locked up for, he was given a probationary period.
Old Problems
Ginrei took things easy for a while. He really did not need the trouble of getting into trouble while on a probationary period. The extra time was used getting the forge back up in working order. The future did not appear real bright for Ginrei. He was still a Genin… possibly the world oldest Genin and that really did not pay a great deal. The fact he was a Genin also did not seem to be changing in the near future. It simply made sense to put more effort into the forge.
Once the forge was ready to go, Ginrei decided to put more effort into socializing. Hiei was often busy with his Raikage duties. He also had a family now. That left Ginrei back where he had started. The only thing that really changed was that Hiroyasu was no where to be found. That was good enough for Ginrei.
After a year or two being returned to the village, Ginrei decided to take part in his first spar.He wanted to measure where he was at compared to others. Though he wanted to go to the training center, the place seemed like it had been cursed by Hiroyasu. The arena was the next best choice.
In the arena, Ginrei found a girl by the name of Naruko practicing her overall speed. Once she noticed him, she asked he wanted to spar. The two of them exchanged blows but it became obvious she was a bit better than he was. With the first dark crystal activated, the match only slightly improved. A few rounds later and all three crystals were activated. Ginrei looked a bit like a fool screaming at no one in particular. He managed to capture Naruko in the crystal prison, then sent a giant, crystal dragon crashing down upon her. Luckily for the girl Rise was there to defend her. The battle did not stop there. Ginrei began to target both Naruko and Rise. It was not until he was hit with a genjutsu that the ramage ended. That night he was placed in the hospital without the option to leave. The next day, the head medic, Amani examined the issue and prescribed some medication.
Personality
Most people in the village who have seen Kanbei would call him a lone wolf. In a sense it is due to how he was raised. As a role model, his father never really seemed to hold an interest in other people. This is not to say Kanbei only cares for himself. That's not true. Deep down the teen is lonely and lacks the social skills to solve the issue. This was the main driving force behind him joining the Kumogakure Academy.
Because Kanbei lacks certain social skills, he is often quick to become combative or even show his temper. To him this is more masculine then showing other emotions. Combined with his competitive nature, his temper often is problematic. The fact that he is different from most in the village did not help. Children are cruel and make fun of things they do not understand. Things like red hair or a missing father.
As for the competitive nature of Kanbei's, it is driven by the younger children at the academy of the higher clans from Kumogakure. The clans that have special jutsu, Kekkei Genkai, or special duties to wave around in the face of others. Compared to students ranging from ages ten to twelve, being a fourteen year old only added to their torment. Beneath the surface, Kanbei dreams of being special like that.
Kanbei's father was not an emotional type. Things were going to happen and there was no use crying about it. That was his belief. Now that did not stop him from chucking a hammer across the forge, in anger, when a piece of hot iron broke. This anger is something Kanbei has inherited. When he finally realized his father was not coming back, he fought back the tears of pain. Instead he broke a couple of chairs. Fortunately he is working on his temper.
Appearance
Here is a teenage boy. He appears to be less than halfway through his teen years. Short, fiery, red hair falls down to ear length. Most of the time it covers the majority of a Kumogakure forehead protector. Just below the forehead protector, two calm blue eyes take in the world around them. The features of the boy's face seem pretty average. Thin red lips finish off the face.
The boy's build is fairly muscular. His height is around 5'6" and he is likely tipping the scales at 115lbs. The attire he wears is made up of a gray shihakusho with a white under kimono. The garments are loose fitting like that of most Kumogakure swordsmen. They do little to hide the overall stature of the teen. A sheathed blade is seen at the side of the teen.

Kiyotani Eri | Friend | This one is trouble and she knows it. She's extremely pretty. Unfortunately she views me as a younger brother instead of returning my feelings. Maybe one day this will change. |
Kuroyari Nakaken | Ally | Every time I see this guy he is trying to go above and beyond the expected duty. If everyone is walking, he is jogging. If you are on a mission that could take a few hours, he packs food for a few weeks. I understand being prepared but this level of over achieving is nuts. I am thinking about asking him if he would like a job at the forge. With his dedication, we could both make some serious cash. |
Reizei Ogosokamaru | Friend | This guy is from one of Kumo's top three clans. He is one of the Reizei but does not seem to act like it. He's always treated me with respect. I am not sure of his past or what makes him different from the others. |
Uzumaki Akechi | Ally | For the most part Akechi is all about himself. He announces himself in a yell any time he enters an establishment. I am not sure how he ever became a shinobi. Then again not all of him is bad. Every once in a while he offers words of encouragement. Just do not expect them often. |

Ninja Journal
I find myself running. I am running through a dark cave towards a light at the entrance to the cave. The light shimmers off of glass like structures that line the walls. The reflections of light make it difficult for me to see the actual entrance. It is confusing me, but I must leave. I have been here too long….
Finally a right turn leads me out of the cave, but I only travel a few more feet before stopping. I am on the edge of a cliff overlooking a a wasteland. My eyes only look down for a moment as the dark clouds start to part. There is a bright light. Then it is as if I am taking from my body and watching the event unfold from someone else's eyes.
The clouds form into five or six large cats. There are multiple breeds. They look down at me. They have spotted me. I am so young. I look no more than six or seven years old now. The light from behind the cats shine's down on my red hair, almost highlighting it over the darkness below. The tiger in the center than starts to speak.
I then wake up in a cold sweat. I spend my time wondering what it was the tiger was about to say? How is it all connected? I think I have been spending too much time looking at the small crystal figurines that my father left behind. It is unfortunate. I have spent the last year pondering their origin. I have heard rumor only such craftsmanship could come from Missetsu. Then other people claim the village is just a myth made up by people who have no true home.
Oh well, at least I graduate the academy today and become an actual Genin. It is time for my life to go somewhere. I do not care if it is just relighting the forge and becoming a weaponsmith. I do not ask for the world, just a little piece of life.
The leader of the mission was a teenager named Uzumaki Akechi. He is perhaps the world's most annoying shinobi. Then there was Kuroyari Nakaken. He is perhaps the world's oldest Genin. But as I understand it, he's actually a samurai trying to learn shinobi techniques, so I can give the guy some slack. I am not exactly the youngest kid to ever graduate either. The mission was simple. Walk to the other side of town and collect a cake, then deliver it.
Everything was going well until we got to the baker's hut. Up to that point the only things that really stood out were that Akechi loved the sound of his own voice and Nakaken was way too dedicated to which ever cause he was on. Like we walked and he jogged circles around us as we did so. We came to a river and while Akechi berated me for now knowing how to walk across water, Nakaken carried me. That is something we never speak of again. He also offered to carry Akechi.
At the hut, the baker himself seemed a little rude. Kind of like get your cake and get out, losers. To me it was already degrading enough to be a cake delivery boy. Of course as we left the hut we got attacked. I managed to drop one thug. In my defense, I was given the cake to hold. It's a little hard to make signs and protect a cake. In the end Akechi ended up crushing the cake. He blamed me. Luckily the customer, his sister seemed not to care as she ate it. At least I got paid.
I have been getting to know some of the others around my age. Most of them are a bit older but it is not like a ten year gap… except Nakaken. I've already mentioned Akechi. Thats two people that my initial thoughts seem to be correct on. After that mission, Akechi found me out at a restaurant. Not only did he have to announce himself, but at the end he left and blatantly stuck me with the bill. Yeah, most annoying shinobi in the world.
Then you have Reizei Ogosakamaru. Though he is one of the Reizei clan, he does not seem to look down on me. He actually spotted and approached me at the training center. I usually avoid it due to the leader clans showing off their skills. He was pretty cool though. We talked a bit before parting ways. I get the feeling he genuinely cares about the village and helping shinobi get better.
The only other person that I have really been around is Kiyotani Eri. She is a looker and she knows it. I do not mind that she does not like to get her hands dirty. Sometimes it seems kind of worth doing her dirty work to see her smile. She has been really nice to me too, although sometimes I think it is just her nature. Like the other day she came around as I was practicing near the waterfall. I was in the mist and moving on the slippery surface. I noticed her and lost my footing. Well she came over and made fun of me a little bit. She also retrieved my sword for me. To thank her, I pulled her in when she offered me a hand. She smiled before pretending to be upset. I didnt fall for it. I think she's going to be trouble for me in the future.
This morning I was sent on another mission. Eri was leading this one. Nakaken and Akechi were also along. The deal was some painter wanted us to escort him out into the woods so that he could paint in safety. Well that was what the mission was suppose to be. As we got out there, we began to get hints that maybe there was not a specific spot that he wanted to go to. The entire time the guy seemed to berate me. He noticed somehow I was not a Chuunin like the others. That made me paranoid. Did I really give off that kind of vibe? The rest of the group was pretty supportive of me, even Akechi. That was a huge surprise. He's never nice. Like you could break your ankle and he'd be the type to point and laugh. Yet he told me I do a good job and to be proud of myself.
Eventually we walked up on some wolves and the client decided to start painting. He was way too happy that we were finally attacked. It was like he expected it, or at least hoped for it. One of the wolves bit me in the ankle. That really hurt. I tried punching him and using my earth style but he was too quick for me. Nakaken however was dropping wolves like they were semi bad habits and his goal for the day was to eliminate a single bad habit. Akechi took out one I think. Needless to say when the client finally informed us we had actually been bait for an attack, Eri was none too please. She ordered we take him into custody and turn him over to the Kumo police force. I am not sure why they would care about it though. Possibly because he lied and did not pay for the proper rank mission maybe?
I felt like a failure. Especially after everyone told me I belonged there and that I should be proud. I did not even hit one of the wolves and Eri had to help me walk home. At least that was a benefit. She wears a very nice perfume…

Theme Songs
This Calling by All that Remains
I secretly crave, crave that scent again
Still feel it pressing on me now
Now with the onset, my flesh is weakening
I steel my nerves for temptations at hand again
[Chorus:]
And I hear this calling still you don't seem so far at all
And I hear this calling
No secrets, deception for these would tear this down
I'll note the past spare the pain
Words match my deeds with brutal honesty
Never forget these choices were made by me
And I hear this calling still you don't seem so far at all
And I hear this calling out
Not falling victim to the fire that burns inside of me
Though I am fearful I will not prevent this tragedy
My strengths been tested I wear the scars that prove
Still I believe that this calling will see me through
And I hear this calling still you don't seem so far at all
And I hear this calling out
My strengths been tested I wear the scars that prove
Still I believe that this calling will see me through.
To Kanbei the calling is that of being a master shinobi. He has chosen this path to become a hero. Because he believes in the calling, he feels the destination is never truly that far away. That is even if his body sometimes cannot handle the physical pressure it takes.
Through his choices he forges his own destiny. He refuses to fall victim to his fears of death. He refuses to die a tragedy. Each scar that he gains is proof of his will. His will to cross the finish line and achieve his goal.
The Way of Your World by Destrophy
It's all been done before and
No one can listen to anyone's answers
They're drifting farther everyday
And they say
We hold our hands to block the sun
We blame the light for what we've done
We look away so We'll forget what We've become
First take what you want
Then you throw it away
This is the way of their world
Don't know what you've got
Until it's taken away
This is the way of your
world
When the night falls you know who you are
And you cast reflections as the mirror gathers rust
It's so safe and lonely with you
Lovers ripping in two
Grind away till nothing's left
There's nothing left inside
First take what you want
Then you throw it away
This is the way of their world
Don't know what you've got
Until it's taken away
This is the way of your world
Your lives will fade before their time
And you'll never say goodbye
The end of all the things you know
And all of what you can be
It's fading fast before you
This is how Kanbei feels about a majority of the people in the world. Peace only seems to be the point where greed is temporarily forgotten. When greed or desire sneak back in war returns so people can take what they want and later throw it away. Might makes right.
As shinobi most blame their actions on the way of the world. It is like the scape goat of the light allowing them to see what they have done. Then they turn their backs in an attempt to forget it. At least in the night, their flaws are hidden. Money buys power.
Both of these parts are negatives based upon each other. They will tear the world apart until there is nothing left to say good bye to.
