Frail, easily frightened, and a known pacifist; Kokuro does not seem like she would belong in a place as hostile as Kirigakure. Still she has found a way to survive despite her many flaws, and dreams of one day being able to help the whole village in what ways she excels in. This might still be a long ways away though while she's still a fresh Genin, but it is the first step in her journey and she is not one to give up what she believes in very easily.

Background

+ Childhood

Born on an otherwise uneventful spring day in Kirigakure, Kokuro was the daughter of Maeko and Daichi of the Shimizu clan. She was a quiet child and rarely cried like some infants do, and as she grew older she much preferred to gesturing out whatever she needed rather than talking. Like all children do though she eventually gained a voice that was soft spoken much like a whisper. She was not very curious, and actually feared anything new she came in contact with. Whenever she felt afraid she ran to her mother or father to hide behind them for comfort. They did not chastise her much and figured it was just a phase that would pass away with age. When she was about seven years old she accompanied her mother on her trips to work as both a medic and house maid. She helped with the work when she could, and quietly observed when she could. not Unfortunately this exposed Kokuro to not only some extensive injuries that the shinobi acquired, but also to how her clan could heal them with their blood. This was like a double edged sword to Kokuro. On one hand it was a way for her to help the people around her, but on the other it created a deep seeded fear that one day there would not be any blood left for her to give which would lead to her own demise. She never spoke of the fear to anyone and kept it bottled where it began to fester into nightmares of her blood getting taken from her by force. Sometimes the people who tried were normal with a menacing feel about them, while other times they were people mangled by varying injuries from battle.

+ Academy

Kokuro had to find out whether or not her fear was not just all in her head. When her mother was gone to retrieve some medicine to help numb of the some pain a patient was having, she made a small cut on her hand and let its drippings fall down on a small cut. Her mother came in to see it, but stayed quiet to observe whether or not her daughter inherited her ability. She could not help but smile to herself when she saw that the wound did indeed close, and kneeled down to give Kokuro a hug. It was not long after that she was enrolled into Kirigakure's academy, and had to stray away from the duties she was used to. She knew of some of the children from around the village, but never had the time actually to befriend or get to know any of them in particular. This only further discouraged her from trying to talk to them, since she thought that the point of the academy was to focus on studies. She tried her hardest to pay attention to most lessons, but she feared that the other students would get injured trying to learn some of them. She found the use of one's fists to be very barbaric and shunned it to the dismay of her teachers. She did however focus much of her time into some more defensive techniques to avoid harm, and continued to study the human body to find ways to better heal it someday. To get more hands on practice, whenever a student injured themselves practicing she would be there to help them get over the wounds. The teachers often punished her for it though, saying that this time is a time to learn to overcome pain and expel weakness. They thought that their students would not be able to learn to do that with someone healing anything that was not necessary. During her time as a student her mother and father gradually started to withdraw from offering Kokuro comfort on recommendation from her teachers. It was in hopes that she would become less meek, fearful, and withdrawn from the others. This only made her more distraught and worsened her nightmares to the point that she became nothing short of a lost cause to most.

+ Graduation Test

Eventually there came the day where the students were deposited in small groups to survive several days in the Blood Marsh. Everyone participating was blindfolded on the trek there to ensure that no one tried to wander back on their own before the test was over. Kokuro felt more fear than even she would like to admit on the way there. There were so many things that could hurt them in the desolate wilderness. Tree branches could give way under people's weight, someone could sink in where the Marsh's muck was deepest, and who knows what animals or even people could make their home there. Her group very openly expressed their disappointment that Kokuro was with them. She was dead weight to them, she would not even choose to fight even if her life depended on it. They did not try to hide their debate of whether or not to abandon her, which brought a dull ache in Kokuro's chest. There was one student who was older than the others who stood up for her though, asking whether or not they forgot that Kokuro was the one who helped many of them recover from injuries. The rest of the group was dumb struck, but fell silent since they could not dispute that fact. The older student named Ichiro smiled very warmly at her, and while the others went away to survey the area he told her to keep her chin up and hang in there. He had family members that were a lot like her in the fact that they disliked fighting and chose to help in other ways. During those several days, the injuries were abound. The insects that fed off them brought about sickness to some, there were two animal attacks, and some injuries from trying to survive while in the difficult terrain. Still, despite the things the other students said about her, Kokuro helped do what she could to get each of them through it. When their group was found, everyone was ok and all f them passed their first exam.

+ Days as a Genin so far

After she graduated there was not much that was changed for Kokuro. She preferred to stay near the injured and sick to improve her skills. She even helped clean other people's homes so her family could afford many of the necessities they needed. What she did not give to her family she saved to buy a small harp from a trader. She practiced in hopes that focusing on her music would help to relieve some of the anxieties she faced and ease some of the nightmares. Unfortunately her family remained disconnected from her to keep her from reverting to her needy ways. Plus with her new baby brother Daijiro in their life there was not much time they could spare for her since she could take care of herself. She has yet to find a team of her own to work with, but this doesn't stop her from trying to participate in many missions. She has many hesitations about fighting still, but she will accompany people on a potentially hostile mission to make sure people do not get hurt. Even if she could not take away all their pain from her inexperience, there was still the chance that she could stabilize them so they could be taken safely back to the village.

Personality

Throughout her life Kokuro has been distant, introverted, and fearful. Despite this, she tried to be kind to anyone who would give her the time of day. Unfortunately, this led to people misinterpreting her kindness for something that was fake and only true at a face value. She is pessimistic about almost any scenario she has the chance to think over, often leading to her making known what the worse thing that could happen would be. This can lead to some annoyances when she accompanies people on missions. She favors fish above any other food, and dislikes honey and milk by themselves. She has trouble getting over the fact that these are just two of many things that are secreted by animals and harvested. Her love of the harp is known by anyone who really gets to know her, but even her closest friends would have trouble guessing that she writes her own melodies for it and sings to her songs when she is alone. She has many fears come and go at times, but two that have stayed with her since her childhood is her fear of being used for her blood and losing anyone she takes care of. To keep one from happening she must act on the other, which leads to many internal conflicts that often are ignored out of fear of pestering those around her. She feels they are her burden to bear alone, but still it is likely the cause of her nightly terrors she experiences. Thankfully the restorative properties of her blood keep her lack of sleep from weighing her down physically, and leads to it being hard to guess her problem from a glance. Still, her dull expression does give some of the tiredness she suppresses away. When she is forced to fight, which is often a very last resort, she tries to apologize to anyone she injures even if she doesn't hit them.

Appearance

This girl stands just a few inches short of four and a half feet tall, and her frail form looks like it could be knocked over by a strong gust of wind. Her long, black hair looks like it'd extend past her shoulders but currently she has it put up in a loose and messy top knot. Many of her locks that have escaped the thin string fall down and frame the sides of her face. Any hair that would've hindered her line of sight have been cut into roughly cut but functional bangs. Her eyes are a pale shade of blue that could better be compared to gray, and complement her childlike features well. She bears pale skin that doesn't seem to have any apparent flaws to it. The faded brown dress she wears has seen better days, and though it may have once extended past her knees, it now comes short with a tattered and ripped skirt. The collar has been sewn with brown fur, and a pelt has been tied around the waist with a thin string of twine and ribbon that has been tied around the back into a bow. The ends of the bow trail down her lower back and brush the ground. Old bandages have been wrapped snugly around both of her calves and old sandals expose the tops of her feet.

Her Kirigakure forehead protector is usually kept tied somewhere around her waist when she is in a more relaxed state, but tied on her forehead during official business and missions.

Family

Maeko	Mother	Perhaps the closest love Kokuro has known in her life. For as long as she can remember she always wanted to be by her side. Now that Kokuro is growing older though, it feels like that love has been cut off. She would still do anything for her mother, but she knows it will likely never return to what it once was.
Daichi	Father	Kokuro was never as close to her father as she was with her mother. Maybe it was because he was never as accepting of her constant need for reassurance and comfort. The same coldness is felt from him now that she is older, and she speaks to him even less than what little time they had spoken together before.
Daijiro	Baby Brother	He was born shortly after Kokuro became a Genin, and ended up being what severed what little connection to her mother and father she still had. All of their time became invested in taking care of him and raising him to be everything Kokuro turned out not to be. Still she doesn't hold this against her brother, and still stops by every now and then to help take care of him when her mother has to depart for work. She hopes that one day he can find success where she has failed to so far.
Kiji	Cousin	Though they have only just recently met, Kokuro looks up and admires Kiji greatly. She knows so many important people, she can fight, and she wants to be a medic like Kokuro aspires to be. Kokuro looks forward to getting to work with her to better herself in many skills, even ones she's uncomfortable with like combat. She also looks forward to getting to spend time with her first friend in ages, for as long as Kiji will let her tag along with her.

+ Journal Entry #1 - Upcoming First Day at the Academy (7/27/14)

I am really glad mother was not upset with what I tried to do behind her back. She actually seemed a little bit happy for some reason. They made me wait in the sitting area while they talked for a little while. It had to be at least a couple of hours judging by how the sun set behind the clouds. They did come back out though and told me they had some very good news. They decided to enroll me in Kirigakure's academy for students. They did sit with me and explain that it would be a difficult trial, but in the end I would be stronger and serve the village just like many in my family have done before me. I am not sure whether to be excited or dreadful about this decision. On one hand I will be able to help the village like I've always wanted, but on another I will be forced to see and do things worse than what is already in my dreams. They will want me to be able to incapacitate an enemy, or even kill them, no questions asked if that was my duty. I do not think I've ever hurt anyone in my life. I might have pushed a kid when I was younger occasionally, but those were just accidents. Mother and father do not seem to see any problem though, and keep saying they will teach me everything I need to know. I just hope they are right, I do not want to fail them.

I feel this song best fits Kokuro's personal beliefs and personality. She is often one to want to give her all for the sake of others, and wants to help them come back from places of darkness they never thought they could leave.

Kokuro does not like to fight, and she will not pretend otherwise. There is a time where every shinobi must raise their hand though, and I think this would fit her for when she had to.
