Background
Kazuma was born the bastard child of an Uchiha mother and an unknown father. At the time of his birth, his mother was a young, promising konoichi. She had served the clan honorably, running missions quickly and efficiently. While on an extended mission on the border of the Land of Fire, Asuna met and fell in love with the son of a peasant farmer. A month later, he was dead, a victim of the rogue ninja Asuna and her team had been dispatched to stop. Asuna returned home with the rogue ninja in custody and a newly-conceived child in her womb.
The clan elders, who had praised Asuna for her skill, turned cold eyes on her when her pregnancy began to show. Unmarried and too young, Uchiha Asuna became the subject of not an insignificant amount of clan gossip. Though the hidden villages were coming together, the Uchiha kept their affairs to themselves. (While Uchiha may well know the circumstances of Kazuma's birth, no one outside the clan would know.) Though her parents stood by her, Asuna suffered the cold glares and whispered judgments of her clan bitterly. She managed, however, to bear that bitterness with a fierce dignity.
When the child, Kazuma, was born frail, some of the clan elders thought that it was a touch of poetic justice, a sad but inevitable end to a morality play. Doctors told the young mother that the baby was simply too weak, that he wouldn't live past his first night. As that news spread through the clan, hearts softened; the Uchiha cared for their own even if they could be a hard people. The clan elders gathered, and they came to Asuna, still in bed with her newborn child. While they did not forgive Asuna her wrongs, they formally recognized Uchiha Kazuma as a member of the clan.
Kazuma, of course, survived his first night. He survived his second night, and the night after that. Though physically frail, Kazuma was a survivor. The medic ninja assured Asuna that Kazuma would never be hale enough to be a ninja. Again, Kazuma proved them wrong. Though thin and never as physically strong as the other kids his age, Kazuma succeeded at the Academy. Notably clever and tenacious, Kazuma was otherwise a seemingly unremarkable student. Owing to his physical limitations, he invested little in his taijutsu studies in favor of other pursuits. He graduated with respectable scores and a reputation for breaking the rules when it suited his purposes.
Throughout it all, Kazuma's mother was the greatest presence in his life. She loved him and he loved her in turn. When an infant, Asuna raised Kazuma with the help of her parents, but she soon moved into her own apartment and raised him herself. Though his mother resumed her duties as a ninja of the village, running missions and teaching at the Academy, she was always there to support Kazuma, to teach him, and he was always there to support her. She always hid her own bitterness toward the Uchiha from Kazuma, teaching him to honor his clan.
Personality
Kazuma's way is to win at all costs. Kazuma may, at times, wear a joker's smile because he genuinely enjoys what he does, but he never approaches anything with less than a complete and total commitment. There are no small missions for Kazuma: be it raking a villager's leaves or assassinating a foreign daimyo, Kazuma would do whatever was necessary to complete the mission. He doesn't take anything lightly.
All of this is often masked by a countenance that can switch from jovial to contemplative in a moment. Kazuma spends a great deal of time in his head, and he doesn't bother to wait for the rest of the world to catch up. He is a study in the harmony of opposed and opposing forces; it can be hard to get a read on him. He can lecture a fellow genin on the importance of tradition even as he breaks any rule that gets in the way of him completing his mission.
Kazuma respects authority, but he believes that respect is earned, not given; this often looks a lot like disrespect to people. Once someone has earned Kazuma's respect or loyalty, it is earned until death. Kazuma's first allegiance is to the Uchiha, and his second allegiance is to Konoha.
Appearance
Kazuma stands just above average height with a slender, long-limbed build that's just short of being gaunt. He has the raven hair and dark eyes that are so common among the Uchiha. He keeps his hair relatively short but makes no other attempt to tame it, and his eyes are steady and penetrating. His slightly tan skin is smooth with the barest hint of a grayish tint.
A dark-gray, long-sleeved shirt and black, baggy pants are worn under a black, sleeveless robe that's cinched with a cloth belt at the waist. A dark-gray breechcloth reaches down to his knees in the front and back. Pouches for ninja tools rest against his right thigh and left calf. His blood-red forehead protector is cocked to the side: with the leaf over his left ear and the long tails draped over his right shoulder.
