Uchuu Mana and Uchuu Kana are twin sisters who have been instructed in the ways of the ninja by their parents. That was out of necessity due to the times of war preceding the Hidden Villages being built, and out of their two shinobi parents, only their mother survived to see stability brought to the Land of Wind. Their mother retired from shinobi life to care for her daughters, and part of the way she earned the money for that was to work as a waitress and bartender at one of Sunagakure's various bars set aside for the task.
Mana and Kana grew up in that environment, civilians and ninja alike spending their days working and trying to dodge the heat as much as was viable in the desert, and then spending the humid desert nights carousing, drinking, gambling, and taking in various other entertainments. One of those entertainments was song, dance, and musical instruments. The beauty of the dancers as they moved rhythmically to the sound of the music, entranced Mana and Kana. The enjoyment the dancers seemed to get from losing themselves in the sound and bringing light and life to a Village that was struggling to get up and running in the wake of bandit forces, rumors of an undead monster, wars and the need for Sunagakure's intelligence-gathering by many clients, and the countless other problems ranging from the dramatic to the mundane… All of this made the twins want to lose themselves as well, to be the center of attention and make people happy with their own happiness. One of the dancers they'd admired was eventually caught conducting espionage against Sunagakure, and was arrested. Mana was shattered by that development, but Kana was intrigued. The idea that someone like that could be right under their noses, engaging in spying, sabotage, and other exciting acts like that had a certain appeal.
The tragedy of their favorite dancer getting taken away like that had very different impacts on the attitudes of Mana and Kana later in life. Mana was determined never to betray those she cared about. Kana was determined to become a lady spy like that dancer, and to never get caught. As the years progressed and they continue to secretly obtain training, the First Kazekage made sure they were contacted about joining the shinobi forces of Sunagakure, but they declined the offer. Then the offer was made in a different tone, that if they were going to continue acting as ninja without allegiance within Sunagakure's walls, they should establish terms by which they retained friendly relations.
From that point on, Mana and Kana became unofficial contracted kunoichi of the Hidden Sand, and their missions to spy and assassinate not only in the Land of Wind but beyond its borders began.
Years passed, and while Mana and Kana's primary focus remained their career as entertainers, they also gradually picked up lessons in shinobi arts, and recently Mana has begun to study Genjutsu as well. However, direct combo is still not their forte presently, and as a result their proficiency with Ninjutsu, Hand Seals, and raw physical strength and stamina are lower than another kunoichi of their level. If not for their shared life force and body mass when they combine using their Kekkei Genkai, they'd be even more fragile and vulnerable.
But they have been successful due to their skill at infiltration, manipulation, and subtlety. They are adept at fooling and distracting, spinning convincing-sounding stories and then making sure to create or plant evidence that backs them up incase someone goes looking. They are not the strongest pair of kunoichi, but they are among the clever, the swift, and the skilled, and have plenty of room to grow.
That potential is part of what drew a woman named Reikoku to them. As much as Kana enjoys the high-stakes life of a lady spy, both she and Mana have begun to think about their future, and what they'll do when they become too old to dance. Dancers remain popular only so long as they are attractive after all, and it becomes increasingly difficult to remain attractive as one ages. A retirement plan was needed, and the longer they remained in the spy game, the higher the chances of getting caught… Something that Kana was determined would never happen to her.
Reikoku approached them and made them an offer. Unlike the one from Sousa, they had a choice this time. And that in and of itself earned interest from the twins.
Reikoku wants to ensure peace, and to do that requires information and the removal of war mongers. Since Mana and Kana were doing so well gathering intelligence for Sunagakure and other clients, she only wanted to them to do the same for her without changing her allegiances. Whatever she told others, she wanted to know as well, with an eye towards anything that could lead to stabilizing political situations, defusing military build-ups, and identifying people with malicious intentions towards Sunagakure or the other Villages.
Mana continued to be against betrayal of those she cared about. And even if she had been coerced into service, Sunagakure was her home. As a result, she made sure to specify in-detail what kind of information she would pass
along, where she drew the line, and that she would not do anything that endangered the Hidden Sand. Reikoku agreed, and now the twins serve as double-agents of sorts (or perhaps triple-agents, if one takes into account
they are also looking out for themselves). They are earning lots of money, helping to make the world safer and setting up for retirement to a civilian life style, and still getting the excitement of spy games and espionage.
And the best part of all? They're doing all this together.
Mana and Kana may seem interchangeable to those who do not know them, but even their attire and mannerisms can be radically different when they aren't playing up the "identical twins" angle by finishing each other's sentences or talking simultaneously or wearing matching outfits, etc. They can certainly be mischievous in that regard, but it's mostly because people expect that kind of thing.
But Kana prefers blade usage and getting in close to cut up her targets, while Mana prefers using Genjutsu to trick and fool her foes so that they don't realize what's going on. Kana has a bit of a vindictive streak and Mana is quick to forgive - except when someone hurts or threatens her sister.
One sees herself as a mysterious dark kunoichi who fights with style, and the other sees herself more as a dancer who just happens to also be skilled at ninja arts. But for both, their core connecting principles are their love and protectiveness of each other, and their passion for dance and music. Their view of Sunagakure is it's an exciting Village to live in for intrigues, and they're glad to help them out, but they aren't ready to be tied down to a Village's authority and lose the freedom to decide how their own lives go.
Mana and Kana are identical twins. Dark skinned, with long silver hair and purple-red eyes, they are a mix of slender and curved, figures fit for dancers. They are not overly tall, and are just right in terms of over-all proportions to be healthy and fairly athletic. Wardrobe varies depending on what they're up to, ranging from dancer's attire to kunoichi garb (Mana's having a birds-and-dancer motif, and Kana's having a bat or vampire-like feel to it).
Decided he didn't want unregistered ninja in his Village with unestablished loyalties, made them an offer they couldn't refuse, and they've been doing freelance work for Sunagakure ever since. Other clients are kept tabs on for Sunagakure's intelligence, and no efforts which might damage Sunagakure are permitted.
A new employer with interesting ideals. But the twins can't live on ideals, so they're also being paid. They'll provide intelligence, with strict limitations, in regard to Sunagakure, but nothing that could damage the Village, nothing confidential, only stuff that anyone could find out if they were in the right place at the right time. If anything becomes fishy, they'll report it to Sousa… Or Itami, though they've yet to establish an arrangement with the Second Kazekage like they had with the First.
The Second Kazekage! Mana and Kana have yet to form any sort of contract or agreement with Lady Second like they had with Lord First, and are trying to keep it that way. As much as they are interested in helping out Sunagakure, they're still tied down by the luggage of Sousa's old "deal you can not refuse", and are just kind of waiting for him to kick the bucket. Only they've heard he's immune to death or something?? Basically, while they wouldn't mind taking jobs from Itami, because she seems like a nice lady who wants the best for the Village, they also have quite enough secret covert shadow contracts with spooky authority figures and they'd reallllllly like to avoid getting threatened or suckered into another one.
The twins had a fun evening hanging out with her at the Sand Storm Bar. Between the three of them, a lot of guys used up their paychecks getting them free drinks for nothing. She's an interesting lady, in Mana's opinion, though Kana's is that she could stand to improve her alcohol tolerance a bit.
