Background
Umahito Daryun was a victim of circumstance and time, having been born alongside his twin sister during the Warring States era. He and Kyo were so large, they killed their mother during labor, leaving their father and clan to raise them without the benefit of a maternal influence. However Kyo may have handled it, Daryun looked to his father and other masculine figures within the clan for guidance on how he should mold himself as he grew. He was large among Umahito, vigorous, and always eager for a scrap.
The clan was very protective of the twins, their future, but they were still hardened by the events of the age and their clan's eventually migration away from the Land of Earth. Daryun learned the basics of fighting, but the greater concern was simply with keeping he and his sister alive. They endured as the Umahito found a new way of life and new traditions, under which they were both raised as they came up.
Daryun came to maturity an honorable, stalwart, strong young man who would nevertheless prove to be a vicious fighter in battle. He had great dreams, and he believed their unreachable status was merely a challenge for him to overcome.
When he was a child, Daryun was branded upon his brow with the likeness of a horse's clad hoof, as was the mighty nin-horse foal Shabrang. Together, they were intended to train when they had grown older. Daryun's father and clan provided him with precisely that education, perceiving within him the strengths of an exceptional warrior even among their own clan. Daryun took closely and quickly to the Umahito Twin Charger Style, which required him to learn about fighting alone and in combination with his nin-horse. They developed a relationship akin to brothers in the process, which made them all the more formidable in a fight.
Gradually, it was found that Daryun's strengths were greatest with the traditional weapons of the clan - the spear and longsword, the former especially. He needed to learn nothing more, though he did insist upon learning hand to hand combat as a backup. This pursuit of greatness in battle both amused and pleased the men he had grown up admiring, and they sated his appetite for knowledge and training well. Eventually, it was decided that he had learned so much and so well that he could no longer rightly be deemed a child.
Daryun was deemed to be a warrior and began to fight alongside the nomadic clan as a whole in battle. He lived up to the prowess he demonstrated in training.
Around the date of his eighteenth birthday, Daryun's ongoing education was deemed to be complete, at least as far as the core clan was concerned. Only by going forth into the world and doing what Umahito do - mercenary work, contracts with villages, perhaps even devoted service to a Hidden Village - could he experience new things and continue to develop his skills. His twin sister, Kyo, was destined to depart around the same time. It was a bittersweet parting, for Daryun was protective of her, but he at least took solace in the fact that Umahito tradition forbade them to kill each other even if they served opposing masters.
Daryun's proud father had prepared gifts for the occasion of his son's departure: a suit of light black armor suited for horseback, a mighty spear with a bladed head (his weapon of choice), and coin for a longsword with a grip suited to his son's great hands. Clad in these arms, Daryun's more confrontational style of combat was sure to enjoy additional support. What's more, it identified him well to foes and intimidated those unaccustomed to so dark and imposing a foe as he.
As he rides forth alone, Daryun looks for a power to serve, and perhaps even to join. After all, the dream lingers in his head of becoming a general and charging ahead, leading an army behind himself into glorious battle. It is a fantastical dream of someone still a young man, but perhaps less impossible than he believes.

This imposing young man stands at roughly six feet and two inches in height, placing him a head above most people he might encounter. Worse, his physique is made to match. The youth's bones are clad in heavy muscle, far bulkier in form than would be normal for any other fellow of his height and apparent years. Drawn across it all, strained to contain the raw strength underneath, is naturally tan flesh scarred by prior violence and weathered with exposure to the elements. Thick arms descend into large hands padded with calluses, with their placement indicating fair odds that he wields some manner of weapon rather often.
A jaw just short of being square sets the tone for a countenance given to severity. In combination with his body, it makes efforts to discern his age rather difficult. A thick neck rises beneath the jawbone to support the remainder, furthering the intensely masculine visage. Though his lips are relatively full, his nose is straight and average in size. Brown eyes are wreathed in black lashes, and the lids rise upward into sharply defined epicanthic folds. The youth's eyebrows similarly rise along with the high points of his eyes, curving up a touch before they disappear. His long black hair is worn in a simple pontail, with some small lengths often left to hang loose. A brand resembling a horseshoe or hoof appears long ago seared into his brow, dead center.
It's unusual to see a shinobi wearing armor, but this one appears to be an exception to the rule. Perhaps it's a cultural quirk? The base layer consists of a black cotton tunic and pants, both lined with silver at the edges, and black riding boots. Although one can't generally see it, a shirt of chainmail fashioned from fine, meshlike links is drawn over his torso. Completing the ensemble is the real armor: layered sections of light black plate for his torso, forearms, wrists, and lower body. There is also a helmet in the mix with a noseguard and length of crimson hair hanging decoratively from the back. A length of white cloth hangs down from somewhere within this armor, reaching his knees.
Last to note are his weapons, and much like his armor, he seems to care for them better than he does himself. A long, heavy spear with a black haft is strapped to his back. Mounted to a gold cap upon the haft is a large, bladed spearhead with a decorative and lengthy tuft of crimson horse hair at its base. As well, the young man carries a longsword with a black grip sized to his large hands, its blade polished and sharpened at all times.
Relationships
Name | Relationship | Notes |
---|---|---|
Umahito Kuri | Father | Kuri was left a single father during the Era of Warring States, with twins Daryun and Kyo to bring up on his own, albeit with help from the clan. He looked to his offspring as the strength of the next generation and raised them well. Without a feminine influence in his life, Daryun looked to his father and other male warriors as an example of what a man should be. For better or worse, as far as how that turned out, Daryun idolizes his father and tries to cross paths with him when he can. |
Umahito Amako | Deceased Mother | Daryun never had the opportunity to know his mother. The Umahito are large even as infants due to their advanced musculoskeletal structure, which makes carrying one child a challenge. Twins were simply too much. Labor overcame her, and by the time both Daryun and Kyo were born, she had passed. Their father spoke of her to him on occasion, but the absence of a feminine figure in his life had profound effects, leaving him closer to men and wary of women. |
Umahito Kyo | Twin Sister | Daryun is very close to his twin sister, in that protective brother fashion. They grew up together during the Warring States era, and with only their father and clansmen to guide them, it hardened them both. These days, they realize that they may serve different masters and even cross each other to the battlefield, but he takes comfort in Umahito beliefs preventing him from being able to kill her. Daryun is also very wary of men who appear to be making passes at or pursuing his sister - to become his accepted brother-in-law would be a trial, indeed. |

Ninja Journal
My sister and I were born at the same time, under the same moon, to a woman we would never know. Father tells us that she was a strong woman, but that the burden of birthing Umahito twins was too much even for her strength. So it was that we were raised by him in times of uncertainty for the world.
They called it the Era of Warring States. People far older than ourselves, conquerors or men born to power, fought each other for territory and wealth - as well as old feuds. None of our business. Nevertheless, we Umahito were often forced to be a part of that business, so the older members of the clan protected us carefully. We were the future for our people, they said, and our survival was everything for many of them. I came to look up to many of the men of my clan - including my father, of course - as the example I should follow.
In due time, the war would end and the world changed. Lands adopted the practice of founding Hidden Villages led by Kage. As natives of the Land of Earth, our people were asked to join by the Tsuchikage, but we refused. I remember hearing the elders grumbling that they did not want the Kage diluting and otherwise meddling in their traditions. The decision was made for us to begin migrating afar, and it was an exciting time. We would see new things and find new battles elsewhere, unbound by anything.
When I was a very young baby, I was branded upon my brow with the likeness of a horse's clad hoof. So, too, was the mighty foal Shabrang. That black stallion and I were destined to share the rest of our lives together, and as I grew, we were introduced and I came to know him. It wasn't long before we were as brothers. He, like me, had a quiet disposition tilted toward wrath by the smallest of slights. We'd learn to control that temper, but without permitting our strength to falter.
Father and other members of the clan began to teach me to ride. They had doubts about how quickly I would learn, given how big I was even as a boy. However, I caught on quickly and rode with the wind, just as if Shabrang's four legs were my own. What a glorious thing it was to feel that sensation for the first time, of being at one with Shabrang, the power of our charge across the land and the whipping of the gale over my face and through my hair. At last, I understood the thrill the older warriors felt as they and their nin-horses charged into battle for what was often the last time. I wanted that for myself.
I asked to be trained, and the older members of the clan - my father and the men with whom I had cultivated brotherly or paternal relationships - were willing to begin the effort. After all, I had aged and grown such that they could no longer deem me a child. I had the strength of arm for combat and the eye for tactics on the battlefield. The courage in my heart was plain to them, and it was to be harnessed. Now was the time.
Training was a thrill for me. Now that I'd mastered riding to the extent that the other Umahito men wished, they put a weapon in my hands for the first time. A training spear. The first time I was told to charge a target upon Shabrang and strike it as I passed, I shattered the weapon to the onlookers' great and pleased laughter. This was what they wanted to see, and understanding prompted a swell of pride in my breast.
I wanted to learn of hand to hand combat, and my demands as to the wisdom of that led to training, but this wasn't where my true strength was deemed to reside. No, it was in our traditional Twin Charger Style that the other warriors felt I had the greatest potential. Whether alongside or upon Shabrang, and in some cases alone, the techniques passed down from one generation to the next were well suited to my mighty body and strength of arm. I focused there and learned much, eventually such that I was trusted with real weapons and permitted to fight alongside the rest of the core clan.
At this point, I was deemed a Genin by shinobi standards, though I wasn't to remain there for long. Raw talent coursed through my veins and drove my instincts in battle, allowing me to learn quickly how to lay our foes low upon Shabrang's back. We were now as one in battle, surprising even some of my adoptive brothers and fathers. Some years later - a modest sum, in fact - I was declared to be a greater warrior still and took on the shinobi standard of the Chuunin.
When we become true shinobi, it is a tradition of the modern Umahito is for us to venture afar in search of new glories and opportunities. It was a bittersweet thing to part ways with the nomads and with my twin, of whom I am admittedly protective, but Kyo can handle herself. Granted, I would sooner castrate any man who pursued her dishonorably, and severely judge any who wished to take her in honorable marriage.
Father was generous to me on this occasion. He gave me the great bladed spear which would become my favored weapon, and enough coin to purchase my trusted longsword. He'd also secretly had a suit of black rider's armor forged for me, and I wear it at most times to this day. Aside from being advantageous in the protective sense, it only allows my great frame to further intimidate my foes. Any advantage in a fight is a worthwhile one, and all of that aside, it has become my distinguishing appearance as a warrior.
As I ride forth in defiance of the unreachable horizon, I do so with great hopes for the future. As with any Umahito, I seek coin as a mercenary and longer term servant of any honorable and worthy lord. However, there may come a time when I do decide to settle with a village in pursuit of my true dream. If I had to choose any way to perish, it would be as a general charging at the head of an army in glorious battle. Only a Kage can furnish me that opportunity in this age.
Skills And Abilities
Name | Rank | Brief Description |
---|---|---|
Charger Whirlwind | C-Rank | A technique learned by the some of the more daring Umahito warriors, this involves charging directly into enemy forces - preferably on horseback, but not required - while skillfully spinning spear or sword all about. Assisted by their augmented perception, the Umahito is able to land many otherwise difficult strikes as he passes through the ranks of his foes and emerges on the other side. |
Dash Step | D-Rank | This defense combines speed and agility with a burst of chakra to allow the user to avoid an incoming attack. Chakra focused through the user's body increases speed and agility to allow swift moments and thus the ability to avoid tight spots. This ability can be channeled through Shabrang when Daryun is riding. |
Dazing Hoof | D-Rank | |
Hoof Kick | D-Rank | |
Momentum | E-Rank | Rather than relying upon direct power, the practitioner instead moves in a manner that brings momentum into their movements. That momentum is their strength. Often, this takes the form of a series of indirect strikes. |
Skewering Spear | C-Rank | To the casual observer, there seems to be very little to this attack. Whether by spear or sword (despite the name), the Umahito skewers his opponent violently. Although the brutality of the attack cannot be denied, its complexity is somewhat understated. A warrior of the Umahito knows vulnerable areas to strike, and acts quickly upon seeing the opportunity to run one through. The technique emphasizes making the most of the chance to skewer a vital spot, hence the force which typically drives the blow. The attack can be dealt just as readily from the ground as it can from horseback. |

Dash Step | D-Rank | This technique combines speed and agility with a burst of chakra to help evade incoming attacks. Chakra focused throughout the body enhances these qualities, and can be channeled through the Umahito's nin-horse to perform the same function. |
Umahito Senses | C-Rank | The Umahito have enhanced senses. This is owed at least in part to their somewhat conical, pointed ears. Members of the clan have an almost 180' field of vision, a keen sense of smell, and an extremely acute sense of hearing owed to the above mentioned ears. This trait is perhaps matched only by their naturally super-enhanced musculoskeletal structure, which allows for fighting with great force and speed. |

---|---|---|
Tree Walking | X-Rank | The ability to walk on sheer surfaces, such as trees, walls, mountainsides, and even upside down. |
Water Walking | X-Rank | The ability to walk on water and other liquid surfaces. |
Name | Rank | Brief Description |
---|---|---|
Twin Charger Style | X-Rank | The signature style of the Umahito clan. This style is based around the shared traits and ability to fight alongside their nin-horse companions. It involves fighting on horseback and in a Horse-style stance with long weapons such as spears and longswords, and also relies upon the Umahito enhanced senses of sight, smell, and hearing. |
Basic Taijutsu Style | X-Rank | The style of the warrior, practitioners of basic taijutsu rely upon strength of arm and swiftness of body to lay their opponents low. Whether by way of fist or weapon, they learn various taijutsu techniques which seldom rely upon chakra to function. |
Name | Rank | Brief Description |
---|---|---|
Shabrang | D-Rank | Shabrang is a mighty Clydesdale stallion, immense even among his breed. The fierce nin-horse has much experience in maneuvering in tandem with his companion, either to enable the rider to strike a blow, or to contribute alone or at the same time. He's also a swift charger despite his size. |
