Background
Uzumaki Masaru was born sixty years ago, though he'd not look the part even in the present day; he deceptively resembles a young man more than anything. As a youth in Uzushiogakure, he was rather the firebrand, always defiant of the rules despite being a quick learner. The young man had a genuine gift for Fuinjutsu, and it was that gift his instructors and family took greatest pride in. For the sake of fostering that talent, they tolerated his mischief and adventures out into the wilderness when no missions were waiting. The first hints not only concerning the roots of his seal knowledge, but of his traveler's tendencies.
There eventually came a time when Masaru earned the rank of Chuunin, time and training then permitting him to leave the village for legitimate reasons. He threw a travel pack over his shoulder and ventured out into the wide world with eager enthusiasm, bearing dreams of delving into the darkness of forgotten places and meeting peoples who never visit the Land of Whirlpools. The young man could've rightly been called an adventurer, were he not also fulfilling a Chuunin's obligations, and he lived that lifestyle for some years.
It was much to Masaru's relief when he bore witness to the founding of the Hidden Villages, a stopgap against so many centuries of war. For the first time, there was a sort of silence he'd not heard since leaving home. Still the occasional clash, to be sure, but bloodshed was lessened as the shinobi organized themselves and began to lay down laws for their own conduct. Masaru started visiting the villages - those he found welcoming - and familiarized himself with the clans while sharing of himself in return.
History's due course led him to a preference for Konohagakure, the very same village his kin would held a certain closeness with in part due to their Senju cousins. He invested years there, learning what the shinobi of the Leaf knew of the surrounding world and studying their arts without necessarily removing the mystique of his own. Sometimes, it was best that his friendliness be of a restrained sort, and their guessing was admittedly more fun for him. Nevertheless, the time spent with Konoha's denizens led to trust and information to fuel Masaru's adventures and travels, to say nothing of his missions.
Eventually, Masaru would return home to the Land of Whirlpools after having visited the major Hidden Villages. There, he trained the young with knowledge he had taken in. For Uzumaki, training takes on different terms, given the many years they have to spare. Many students were with Masaru for quite a long time and he remains close to them to this day. In the moment, though, he had become too comfortable as a budding elder and was beginning to adopt their glacial thinking pattern. In order to avert this, he looked outward to the world and to its needs. Resuming his travels would doubtless keep the fire of his youth kindled.
Masaru didn't escape Uzushiogakure before duty called him to become a member of the council, which thought that he might infuse some useful perspective into their ranks, even though he was quite on the young end. He didn't have to search long for reasons to leave, though. Foreigners had been under attack by a series of threats in recent times. The Recluse, the Silence, so many others - some quite skilled in the use of seals. This was a calling, to be sure. Who could better advise their allies in such matters than him? At the same time, he'd gain more of that perspective the council wanted and send it back home. Taking up his travel pack once more, Masaru set out to Konohagakure first, where he plans to warm ties with his homeland and offer his aid as advisor and warrior both.
Personality
[[collapsible show="+ Reveal: Personality" hide="- Hide: Personality"]]
Uzumaki Masaru has fire in his heart, let there be no doubt about that. The passionate ways of Uzumaki youth seem to have blossomed within him and never let go with the passage of this. Perhaps this is due to his deliberate efforts to not isolate himself away in Uzushiogakure, but rather, to get out and explore the world. An invitation to visit a new culture or to explore ruins long forgotten are temptations he can hardly resist, and he's earned a number of scars over the decade for his trouble. Nevertheless, that passion for life and living in the moment drives him onward. He can be adventurous and downright raucous, he likes a party, and his casually romantic endeavors cross the borders of lands and (if rumors be true) genders.
Living in the moment is a strong aspect of his philosophy surrounding life, in fact. He believes, given the insight of living so long without aging equally, that people go about their lives in the wrong way. It's important to Masaru that he forgets yesterday's troubles and doesn't worry about tomorrow's concerns. Living in the moment, in the exact here and now, offers him a world full of detail to explore. What has been is done, and what will be will be. It's in the now that one can make the most difference, and in the now that one can see so many things other people never slow down enough to take notice of.

Most people would find this young man to be rather lithe of build for his relatively tall stature, about five foot eleven, yet he carries himself with good health and vigor. His skin is an unblemished tan hue, a plane drawn taut across his lean musculature. One would be pressed to say that he looks in any way athletic, yet calluses upon his digits do imply some manner of laborious activity. In fact, the toughened flesh is stained with a faintly black hue, perhaps ink or some other such substance. That he keeps his nails cut short makes this all the more obvious.
Above the slender neck, an angular jawbone frames his facial features. A straight nose is the centerpiece for a face given to lingering in languid calm, lips drawn slightly upward at their peaks. His dark eyes pair well with his darkly tanned skin color, yet both are somewhat at odds with the hue of his hair. Indeed, his mane easily reaches the small of his back, and is typically bound into a hefty rope of a braid. The hair is so red as to be crimson, an atypical color in most places outside of the Land of Whirlpools. Judging his age would perhaps seem oddly difficult, save that he must be somewhere in his twenties. Early, or midway, perhaps?
He attires himself in what would be formal dress, if he were so inclined as to keep it that way. His kimono-like robes are white and adorned along the edges with carefully painted patterns. He leaves them to hang open at the chest, revealing the bandaging wrapped about the lower half of his torso. Generously tailored pants of the same white hue descend until tucked into bandages around his ankles and feet, which are slipped in turn into plain wooden geta. Black gloves are drawn over his hands, with white cloth wraps located just above. He carries a katana against one hip, a kunai on the other, and a scroll satchel strapped across his back. Notably, his robes are decorated quite prominently with a whirlpool-like symbol in black thread. A similar symbol has been engraved into the hitai ate upon his brow, attached to a black bandana.

Senju Daisuke | Hokage | Masaru has traveled to many lands, but he's spent most of his time abroad in the Land of Fire and among the people of the Hidden Leaf. He's known Senju Daisuke since he was a boy and is rather fond of him. It would be inappropriate of him to play the elder brother role, particularly with Daisuke having grown to become the Hokage, but he still tries to pay the man a visit whenever he can get around to Konohagakure. Never forgets to bring a bottle of good, expensive booze along for the reunion, either! |
Iwata Michiko | Kumogakure Head Ninja | As the years have gone by, Masaru's watched Michiko grow up into a fine young woman of principles and strength. Given what he's heard abroad and on his most recent visits, he thinks her a credit to her village in all that she does as Head Ninja. They haven't gotten to know each other too personally, but they're certainly on diplomatically friendly terms. Masaru's efforts to befriend the people of Kumogakure did turn out well, after all. |

Ninja Journal
I don't often think of my youth. It seems to long ago now. Heh! In fact, it genuinely was long ago, if I'm forced to admit it. I can safely say that I was blessed with a good childhood and family in the Land of Whirlpools. I repaid their care by behaving like a true firebrand, always defiant of the rules despite being a quick learner. My parents understood. It was the Uzumaki way to live with passion, particularly in one's youth.
That's not to say there wasn't a price to come with that tolerance. My parents, father in particular, were of the opinion that someone so bright and (to their observation) talented should direct his talent to society's benefit as well as his own. That would be how I began the study of seals in my boyhood years, and as time went on, the early roots of our own Fuinjutsu. I also studied the sword, and I do enjoy that, but I knew that Fuinjutsu was my passion from the moment I drew my first seal. Some people are born to fight, some to nurture, some to sculpt. I was born to work with seals, both researching and utilizing them.
Outsiders often don't realize that we Uzumaki age normally until later in our lives. I went through all of the ordinary phases, but in the midst of them, I attended the Academy in Uzushiogakure and learned the way of the shinobi. I've never been one for violence, though I do recognize that there are times when it's the appropriate application. What initially attracted me to the career was the prospect of adventure, of excitement, and of opportunities to see the world. It happens that I'd get all of that and more. By my late teens or early twenties, around when my aging slowed to a crawl, I'd ventured to every land and fascinated myself with the lives of foreign peoples. I learned to live in the moment, appreciating the many facets of each one. What's the rush with so much time ahead?
My years as a Genin were interesting. Under the guidance of wise shinobi and in the company of my fellows, I ventured far and wide on a variety of missions. The theoretical things I learned at the Academy were put to practical use, and I saw just how far I had to go. That wasn't discouraging to me. To the contrary, it was very much an encouraging realization that my many years would be full of learning and new experiences. No shame in taking one's time to intimately understand different points of interest.
The really interesting time in my younger life was when I passed my trials and was recognized as a Chuunin. The fire in my heart and the freedom it yearned for finally had room to grow. I was sent abroad on missions, and this time around, it generally wasn't under the supervision of an elder shinobi. In fact, on more than one occasion, I had Genin under me during these journeys. That was pretty fun, showing them the sights and a bit of useful knowledge. They helped me to see how much I enjoyed teaching as much as I did learning, and really, it's a valuable passion. How much better off would the Uzumaki be if we learned much and passed it along as a rule?
I devoted myself to learning everything I could about the world from that point forward. If there was a mission abroad appropriate to my skills, no time was wasted in seizing it. I'd met more foreigners by the time I was thirty than many of my relations had in their entire lives! So many good friends made in so many places I'd once never heard of, and oh, how I was pleased to hear the silence in the wake of warfare after the founding of the Hidden Villages. At long last, the divisions and laws laid down brought about a manner of peace. It wasn't perfect, but I was happy to see it come to pass and to witness the new growth throughout the lands, like winter seeds budding in spring.
Outsiders dread growing older. I suppose we Uzumaki aren't any different, only we have a great deal more time afforded to us. This is a privilege of the blood, yes, but I don't believe that ages need burden either us or outsiders. Over time, I've developed a philosophy about life. Let yesterday be, and stop worrying about tomorrow. We can't change the past and the future is always in motion. Instead, focus on the present. You realize how much more life you can and should live when you understand just how many things are happening around you in one single, fleeting moment. Most people never slow down enough to experience it, but I think slow aging's helped me to slow down my perceptions. Oh, every second in this world's full of incredible and powerful forces.
Maybe it's thinking like that which has kept me so young even as the number of years grows ever higher? Perhaps I'm just eternally immature? I really couldn't say! The fact is, I'm beyond pleased to still feel young, to still have that passionate fire burning in my breast. Every day, I wake with a zest for life and the want to experience it. As I've become a recognized Fuinjutsuist, I've been trusted more and more with solo missions abroad, and I can't really deny that I've gotten up to my fair share of mischief during them. Adventures, travels decidedly off of the charted route. Yes, even foreign lovers, albeit casual. When I pass on the knowledge of my life, the young people are probably going to be a little dumbfounded, but maybe they'll also see how much value there is in taking time to embrace the unexpected and unknown.
I was … more than a little surprised when the Council of Elders took notice of my exploits for reasons other than being pissed at me over them. In fact, they wanted me to accept the title of Elder and join their ranks! It was an honor to be thought of so highly, of course, but I resisted at first. I didn't want to be burdened with the responsibilities I had seen those old men deal with day in, day out. That's when they reassured me of their reasons. I knew I was a little young on the spectrum to be called an Elder, but just old enough for them to take me in with hopes that I could infuse their ranks with new life. I understood foreigners and things they had never ventured abroad to study, and they wanted someone with that mindset present on the Council. If they were opening their minds to learning, then I was willing to give the Elder thing a chance. I accepted.
The task of serving as an Elder wasn't nearly so dreadful as I'd anticipated it might be. True to their word, the Council consulted me on foreign affairs and mysteries I might have explored during my adventures. They seemed to place value in my knowledge and opinions, and so they found a place of tolerance for me despite so many of them being so much older than I. What I had to offer them wasn't years, it was the experiences and spirit of one determined to remain young at heart.
We were troubled when we began to hear of a string of peculiar conflicts being waged in the great lands. Powers like the Recluse and the Silence, some of them utilizing Seal Mastery to incredible effect. There were even fears that one of our own had defected in order to teach these malevolent orders. Worse yet, fears that one of our own might not simply be teaching. It was to our great relief that the powers that be won the day, and revealed in the end that no Uzumaki were involved in the techniques wielded by any of the vanquished powers. I still felt that we should've done more to help them counteract the threat. Our knowledge might've served as a vital foil and saved a great many lives.
To that end, I've convinced the Council to let me resume my travels. I'll remain an Elder and a representative abroad of that body, retaining what authority I have. It's my sincere hope that I'll have opportunities to assist benevolent powers in the event that threats like those I've spoken of ever rear their heads again. In the interim, I can serve as an advisor, a guide, and a simple friend. The Council wants perspective, and I'm now back in a situation where I can venture between the lands, keeping myself abreast of the world's affairs and hopefully warming relations between them and Uzushiogakure where they've cooled. It's exciting, and I can't quite wait to finish my journey to my first destination. You can't blame me. I'm only sixty, after all!
Skills And Abilities
Name | Rank | Brief Description |
---|---|---|
Capture Barrier Seal | D-Rank | An offensive variant of the defensive Seal Barrier technique. The target is captured within a dome of solid chakra easily penetrated from the outside but not from within. |
Chakra Leech Tag | D-Rank | This tag is a cleverly designed technique which drains chakra from a target while at the same time igniting a damaging backlash of power upon the victim. |
Frozen Sealing Technique | D-Rank | This seal freezes its victim in place on contact. It can be applied by striking the mark onto the opponent, or by placing it on a surface where the target might touch. |
Moonlight Cut | D-Rank | A technique of the chakra-based Cloud Style kenjutsu form. A reflection of light off of the blade, amplified with chakra, causes the glare to momentarily blind the opponent while the user executes a crescent shaped slash. By night, it's said that the victim might even seem to see the moon rising behind the sword's wielder as they strike. |
Calm Moment Seal | C-Rank | This work of Fuinjutsu is too complex to be utilized by any other than an Uzumaki. The seal is created with a quick gesture before slamming one's hand to the ground, the point from which a diamond-shaped design spreads outward. Eventually, it reaches a critical stage and a blast of pure chakra surges upward. However, the calm before the proverbial storm gives one or possibly more victims a chance to reconsider staying nearby before being struck. |
Radiant Piercing Chains | C-Rank | This technique summons forth a multitude of golden chakra chains from the Uzumaki's body, each tipped in the likeness of a brilliant spearhead. They spiral through the air, homing in on and eventually piercing their target before dissipating. The powerful energy of this Fuinjutsu is so named for how deeply and viciously it bites into the opponent's body. |
Great Chains Destruction | A-Rank | This immensely powerful work of Uzumaki Fuinjutsu causes a massive plethora of golden chains to to surge forth from the user's body. They spread out at high speed and slam into the target area with such force that even the terrain is obliterated with little effort. This leaves little hope for an opponent, once struck, to escape without having suffered equally devastating harm. |

---|---|---|
Detection Seal | D-Rank | Carefully deployed in a variety of forms, this seal provides an excellent ward against stealthy attackers and intruders. It may inform of such an advance via any number of ways, depending upon the kanji used. |
Seal Barrier | D-Rank | This seal creates a tangible barrier which protects the user from many forms of attack. Typically, it takes the shape of a dome or a wall. With sufficient force, it can be shattered, but nevertheless remains a useful buffering tool. |
Uzumaki Seal Wall | C-Rank | The superior Fuinjutsu version of the Seal Barrier technique, it becomes only more potent in an Uzumaki's hands. It produces a thick, tangible energy field which protects the user from almost any attack. The field is so resilient that even attacks which get through are weakened by the time they reach the user. |
Striking Chains Evasion | B-Rank | A masterful defensive technique created as a work of Uzumaki Fuinjutsu. The golden chakra chains summoned forth from the body intercept oncoming attacks with immense fortitude, capable of warding off virtually element employed in a technique. |

Water Walking | X-Rank | The ability to walk on water and other liquid surfaces. |

---|---|---|
Cloud Style Kenjutsu | X-Rank | Mastery of the blade is combined with chakra to produce unusual maneuvers bordering on Ninjutsu. Deceiving the enemy by concealing the user's true intent or movements is a common theme, though this isn't an assassin's style. Surprise and trickery are merely used in clever fashion to both lethal and non-lethal effect. |
Scroll Mastery | X-Rank | This field of jutsu allows more complex and larger scale seal techniques to be stored for later use. This mostly involves storing objects. However, scrolls also have many other uses. Their applications in combat are many, and someone with this knowledge is even needed to fashion a summoning contract. |
Uzumaki Fuinjutsu | X-Rank | This style represents the Uzumaki clan's heightened abilities where it concerns Seal Mastery. They can do the same thing as regular seal users, only to a greater extent and with more power. The Uzumaki can accomplish feats using seals which outsiders are quite simply incapable of harnessing. |

Uzumaki Seal Matrix I | C-Rank | This transformation is learned by Uzumaki as a means of focusing their chakra toward empowering their Fuinjutsu. A complex matrix of glowing blue symbols appears upon the skin as the technique comes into being, channeling chakra more efficiently so as to push the boundaries of Uzumaki power yet further. |
