Can't we all just get along?
Background
Yamanaka Nori was born to a relatively large family. He is number 6 of 8. As a result, he is constantly in someone's shadow. Luckily for him, he wasn't born to the Nara, but unluckily, the Yamanaka are just as fond of putting their siblings under their control to get them into trouble. Just think of the fights Nori had growing up: "Nori hit me," "Yeah, but Osamu was in control of me so it doesn't count."
Nori's father, Minori, and mother Ryo are farmers whose produce goes to the local markets in Konohagakure. Nori spent much of his younger years tilling the land, planting, harvesting, and selling food at the markets. All of the siblings had chores, but a Yamanaka doing a chore is slightly different. You have a trouble horse that won't plow properly, take it over with a Mind-Body Switch and move on. Need to send a letter back to the house, grab a wild bird and you're done! Having trouble with a stray cow running away from the herd, say no more Nori is on it.
While Nori appreciated being a farmer; the simple life has its perks, he wanted to take after some of his older siblings that became ninja. His oldest brother and sister have stayed to help their aging parents. The next oldest brother went off to join the medical corps. His twin sisters became fighting nin. Then there was Nori who is looking to become a member of the intelligence division. Finally his younger brother and sister are still too young to choose their path and help out on the farm.
Nori is particularly gifted with using the mind-body technique and has learned how to use it from a young age. He is particularly fond of taking over animals. He has a strict code to be good to the animals, to make sure he gives them something in return for allowing him to take over (food or other), and never staying in the animal more than a few hours most. Nori is also very stealthy. Growing up in a large family requires you to learn how to get away with things without getting caught. He one time used the family technique only to wake up in a dress and wig. His sisters still do not let that one down.
Nori went to the academy and trained for becoming a Genin. As part of graduating, he was sent to gather information on a local mining operation that was in the process of closing. The mine was important to the village, so they needed to know why a previously prosperous mine was suddenly closing. Nori, using a rat, found out that the owner was losing the profits by gambling it all away. Thus, Nori became a Genin.
Nori is currently calling home a small earthen hut in the middle of the Toshiba Forest.
Personality
Nori is kind hearted, very interested in playing games, and very much a prankster. Still, Nori knows when to be serious because danger lurks around every corner on a farm.
Nori is a strategist, a tactician, and a very empathic person. He excels at getting into the minds of others, both literally and metaphorically. He prefers to learn about the motives of his enemy combatants and try to come to a mutual understanding instead of pummeling them. When it comes to fighting, he tries to minimize physical damage.
Nori is a spiritual boy and is often seen conversing with the animals and plant-life. He has performed exorcism rituals on people he thinks might have oni possessing them. He often worries about the local spirits and their well being, to the point where he has declared himself the self-appointed Lama of Fuuma Basin's Abandoned Temple.
He is fiercely loyal, although it takes him time to gain trust around people he doesn't know. Still, once he has come to trust someone, he would die for them to protect them. To Nori, death is just another part of life; something that shouldn't be worried about. Coming from a farm, where death is a part of daily life, it is an understandable position.
When it comes to training and learning, he soaks it up like a sponge because he is getting attention from an adult. With as many kids as his parents have, he is a little attention starved at times.
Appearance
Konohagakure Desc
Yamanaka Nori is a short, skinny boy. He wears a set of baggy black pants that do not fit him very well. The baggy black pants end at a pair of stubby toes, which are usually left bare. Nori's top is a simple brown under-shirt (most likely made from cotton) with a rust-colored long-coat (made from wool). The inside of the long-coat looks to be camouflaged, but that might just be tar and mud caked on.
He constantly has a brown burlap sack strapped to his back that is about the size of his torso. Nori's face is long with prominent cheek bones that frame his features. His sandy, blonde hair is long and tied behind his back in a pony-tail. The boy has brown eyes and stout lips. He wears the head-band of the Leaf on his forehead.
Traveling Desc
Nori looks like a typical street urchin. He wears a heavy layer of dirt and filth over his body, which can be easily seen due to the lack of shirt he wears. The boy is scrawny, exhibiting very few muscles. His pants are nothing more than rags sewn together with different colored thread. He wears no shoes. He is wearing a head wrapping, and his hair is apparently tucked up inside it; the blonde only barely showing through, and when it does…it too is dirty. Nori's face is long with prominent cheek bones. The boy has brown eyes and stout lips. If it is colder outside, he will wear a long jacket made of sewn together rags that smells rather awful.
Relationships
Uchiha Naru | Team Leader/Mentor | What is there to say about Naru other than that she is like an onion. The more layers you peel back, the more you question about her. Nori has known her to be kind to he and his family, helpful in pushing him to succeed and learn, and terrifying in combat. Nori is concerned for her though after they discussed a certain darker aspect of her life. |
---|---|---|
Nara Satomi | Chuunin Advisor | Where Naru doesn't mind showing the harsh realities of the shinobi life, Satomi is a little more on the gentler side. She has always been there for Nori when he is feeling down or when he needs a pick me up. Nori also likes to prank Satomi for reasons unknown. |
Satonezu Ataru | Roommate & Teammate | Nori has lived with Ataru, helped him in his mafia dealings, and chided him mercilessly over his 'special' weapon. Nori likes Ataru alot and even calls him Ataru-chan after having lived together for a winter. While Ataru is the brawn, Nori likes to think of himself as the brains. Nori feels for and understands Ataru's need for justice and would help him find it. |
Sosuke | Teammate | Sosuke of the Gansao. Ever since Nori first met Sosuke and pranked him, the two have grown closer. They are teammates and have a good understanding of eachother's capabilities and personalities. Nori respects Sosuke but feels he is far too hard on himself. |
Yotsuki Hiei | Friend | A Kumogakure shinobi that Nori has grown to like. Hiei is like Ataru in that he is the brawn, but to Hiei's brawn is Hiroyasu's brain. Hiei can be very quiet when he is in a bad mood, but he is otherwise fun to be around. He and Nori have a special hi-five greeting. |
Katayama Hiroyasu | Friend | Perhaps Hiroyasu and Nori are too similar for their own good. Both are country-raised survivalists. Both are strategists, naturalists, and spiritualists. Both are more adept at support roles than fighting. They are very much alike and for that reason, Nori respects him alot. |
Old Man Windmill | Bitter old man | Nori's older twin sisters pulled several pranks on the old man that owns the windmills in Konohagakure. As a result, the old man refuses to let Nori use the windmills for Nori's home-grown grain. Nori doesn't like him very much. |

Ninja Journal
Dear Mother & Father,
I will not send this to you. It would be too dangerous. So, why am I writing this then? Well, we were told by the outpost commander here that it might be a good idea to write to our families for support. I know that Osamu and Kazue would be drafted if they were found. Knowing that you, Mother and Father, could not stand that, you've probably gone into hiding. I have an idea of where you are right now, but I won't write it just in case someone finds this. I just wanted you to know that I love you and miss you.
Satoshi, our dearly-loved mednin brother, is safe and sound in Konohagakure's hospital, and most likely will be staying there. Natsumi and Natsuoko are still too young for the draft, but not by much. They are out in the field, as am I, but where I look like I am 8, they have already gone through puberty and look like adults. If they are caught, it will be trouble. Luckily, they always have eachother's backs.
I'm preparing myself for war. I have a large stash of food set aside for the winter already, but seeing how people are rationing already, I think I will need food set aside for more than just the winter. I hope you managed to get your crops harvested already. I hear they've burnt some farms. They should have ransacked them before burning them if they were smart, but we are not dealing with rational foes. I have ideas of how to hopefully stop this, but I need to talk to the Hokage-sempai.
I have a lot of friends here, so while I miss home and my family, I am doing very well. I hope this conflict doesn't postpone the Chuunin Exams.
Love,
Nori
Hashiramako-sempai,
I doubt you've heard of me as I am just a lowly 11 year old Genin who hasn't even been out of the Academy for a year. I am Yamanaka Nori, and while I know it is not my place to advise you, I humbly request that you give me an opportunity to speak my mind concerning the use of lethal force against the True Force Movement villagers. As a son of villagers in Kadomai, and a sibling to villagers, and friends with villagers, and the posessor of a young idealism that hasn't been beaten out of me yet by the deaths of those I love…I think I have an interesting perspective on why the TFM villagers have come to this point in time and why lethal force will make matters worse.
The shinobi of Konohagakure are pledged to protect the villagers from threats both foreign and domestic, even if that means protecting them against themselves. It is said that the TFM holds 40% of the villagers in its sway. If we kill them now, we run the risk of martyring them and turning that 40% into 100. We need the villagers, and they need us. It is a symbiotic relationship. If we turn them against us, where will our missions come from? Where will our food come from? Where will our goods, weapons, and supplies come from? The villagers produce tha vast majority of our consumables. Without them, we will have to do all of that work ourselves. This means less time for training, less time for patrolling, less time for intelligence gathering. We will weaken our ability to protect ourselves by parting ways with the villagers.
The villagers obviously need us. If we leave them alone, the other shinobi villages will sweep in and take over, and…they will not show mercy. At least if the villagers surrender now, we will treat them with fair quarter. What I suggest is that we only use lethal force if is required, but otherwise we capture the villagers.
Once we have the villagers captured, we should then talk with them. Find out why they want us gone. Reason with them. In combat, a single villager is but a fly to a trained shinobi. Even in mass numbers, villagers are little more than a wasp, so why should we kill them when it takes very little effort to do so? A better measure of our skill is to take them alive and find out why they were trying to kill us in the first place.
My best guess is: collateral damage. Accidents happen. In combat, it is easy to use too much force. Suddenly, someone's farm land has been re-arranged by an earth user and can no longer be farmed, or someone's child or significant other was caught in the crossfire and hurt or killed. The boundaries drawn between Lands and Hidden villages has made trade to the other lands harder, making villager life more difficult. The draw of the large markets in Konohagakure have taken vendors away from their smaller villages, including mednin, farmers, and smiths, making life more difficult for those small villages. I could go on and on, but you get the point. While we provide more security, in many ways we make life harder too.
So, what I would suggest is that we put the head of the TFM on your council. We work with them rather than against them, just like you did when you asked the other clans, including the Yamanaka, to form the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Let the TFM be the next clan to join us. Let's make this Land stronger, not weaker. Death will only weaken us. Life, even if restrained for a while, can at least open communications that lead to a possible better world. Thank you for taking the time to hear me. As always, if you no longer need my service, then command me to take my life and I will. I serve at your command.
Yamanaka, Nori
Uchiha Narusegawa-sama,
I ran into you today in the woods outside of Kadomai. People inside Konohagakure say you have defected. I don't know what to believe. On the one hand, you have sided with the villagers in an effort to protect them. On the other hand, you have sided with the TFM villagers who are at open war with Konohagakure even. While the TFM would have been crushed by the Daimyo's armies in a direct confrontation, that is usually not the nature of such fights. Villagers, with smart generals, would be better off performing hit and run tactics, which could easily do just as much damage. So, in essence, I'm not sure you were needed to protect them if they had good enough generals. Seeing as they were just villagers, maybe you thought they didn't have the experience to be good generals? If that is why you joined, then so be it, but if not, I personally think you could have protected them better if you were in Konohagakure, voicing your opinion to the Hokage directly. I tried to persuade her not to allow us to use lethal force, but I think it fell on deaf ears. If you were here, maybe that would have changed…which is the only reason I feel that maybe you did defect. I do not think you did so intentionally…but only the future may tell.
Dearest villagers,
As you leave Konohagakure today and venture out into the Land of Fire once more, remember that we were here to help you through this whole ordeal. Whether you picked up arms against us, refused us supplies, or just walked away, we were still here. No, we weren't just here, we were actively trying to save and protect you to the best of our abilities. Sometimes there was still bloodshed, but only if we were provoked and had little choice (there are always alternatives, but in the heat of battle they are hard to think through). So, next time there is a battle, or a civil war, and your land is ruined or your family is hurt…know that we feel the same pain as you do. If you are weakened, we are weakened, because without you, we have no one to protect and our lives are without meaning. I was happy to give you all I have, and if it means laying down my life to give you that much more, I am at your service, both in this life and in the next.
Yamanaka Nori
I wish I knew where you were. Satoshi, Natsumi & Natsuoko, and I headed to Kadomai as soon as we could, but your fields and house were burned down. We haven't found your remains yet, and we are desperately hoping that you fled early and got far from home.
In the dark news of the burned fields, I figured I'd provide some light. I was transfered to Team Shadowstrike under Nara Satomi-san. She goes a little over-board when it comes to anyone coming within a click of any mission she's in charge of, but other than that she's a good leader. She's been teaching me a whole lot about controlling myself. Through her I'm noticing that I tend to be a blabber mouth, my emotions get the better of me more often than I'd like, and I see the good in people more than most. Now, the first two are definitely issues that I need to work on. That last one is still up for debate.
If we have time soon, we were going to start a search for you outside of Kadomai. We want to know where you went. I love you and miss you Father, Mother, Osamu, and Kazue.
