Summary:
An eventful meeting between a wanderer, genin, and one of the Seven
"Blood and Fire"
Testing Grounds
Reina doesn't look as if she's spying on people. On the contrary, she sits in a scraggly tree off the immediate path. It's the lower branches that are thicker and longer. They make the best seat, but a fairly good vantage point for the entire area. It's not in the Genin grounds she has found her resting area, but right outside it, for some reason. And she's playing cat's cradle with thick yarn.
It's not like people can't see her. But she's just a young lady goofing off rather than working hard. Noted for a few moments then dismissed forever. She almost seems a villager without any gear and symbol of a shinobi to really make her stand out. And Reina is humming to herself, so lightly that unless someone approaches her they'd hardly hear the tune.
Kiji had spent the last few hours training in the Genin testing area. Thus his hair is mussed a bit and he's got some dirt and blood on his white tunic. Both of his arms are bared to the elements but he is still sweating lightly. It had been a good workout. He reached up then and ran a hand through his long black hair, his fair face combining with it to make him appear as though female from a distance. His eyes were blue rimmed in orange and his left arm had two long cuts that were still bleeding some. He noted the girl int he tree and walked over toward her, looking up and tilting his head to one side. "What are you doing with that string?"
Reina fumbles with the string and it becomes a meaningless tangle around her fingers. She untangles it carefully and looks up at Kiji. "Anyone can do it," she says. "You wind it around your fingers in certain ways and it makes patterns." She demonstrates. "It's red, like the story red string of fate," she says. "The first part of the story says the gods wind a string around the finger of two people. And those two people are destined to meet. Want to try?" she asks curiously. The girl slips down from the tree to stand on the ground. She holds the string out to him.
Reina has a way of looking directly into people's eyes. Not rudely, but not gently. "I'm Miira Reina," she tells him.
Kiji's face blanked for a moment when she refrenced the red string of fate, but her explaination was enough to explain it to him. "Ah.. the gods…." He waited and watched her as she slipped down from the tree. Curiosity had caused his eyes to slip into a purple tone while the ring of orange remains as it was. He blinked at Reina when she asks if he'd like to try the string game and he lifted his hands as if to try it but then pulls back away again and shakes his head. "I'm Shimizu Kiji and… well, I'm a mess." He gestured to the blood on his arm and hands.
Reina gives him an 'oh well, maybe in the future' look when he turns down the string. She blinks when his eyes change color, to make sure she's not seeing things. Now she's hallucinating. But no it's still there, purple and orange, and now Reina is intrigued. But it's nothing compared to when he gestures to the blood and gives his surname. "You're one of the Shimizu Clan!" she says, as if he'd just announced he was the Mizukage. "Your clan is known for their ability with blood release, their special blood, and the ability to use it both in healing and harming." She seems to know the basics of his clan quite well.
"I've been keeping an eye out for you," she says. And she has. This isn't the first place she checked. Sitting in the restaurant, touring the gardens, all normal things that wouldn't seem conspicuous. She's looking for a few others too, but Shimizu are among them. "Do the Shimizu's eyes change color?" she wants to know. "Or are you unique?"
Kiji blinked repeatedly when the girl suddenly went into full fan-girl mode. Women… He never understood women…. Slowly, slowly he nodded his head to each of her points about his bloodline. Yes, he was Shimizu. Yes, he had special blood. Yes he could control it in healing and harm. Well he could heal in theory anyway… He was about to ask her if she was alright, maybe she'd hit her head or something… When she said she'd been watching for him. His eyes narrowed then visibly and the color shifted from his curious purple into a dangerous appearing combination of yellow inside and orange lining it… The color wasn't solid either, he seemed to be sinking into a more dangerous mood, the yellow slowly deepening in hue as he grew more serious. He deftly side-stepped the question about his eyes and went straight into: "And /why/ were you looking for a Shimizu?" He knew she couldn't have been looking for /him/ specificly as she had asked about his eyes….
Reina has never seen his eyes before, but she can guess what those luminous yellow eyes mean. It seems they change with each expression. If they change that often, she would have seen more like him around the village. Likely it's unique? She says, "That eye color may be a great hindrance. You could give away what you might want to try and conceal. Still cool, though," she adds, as if she's comforting him. Sincerely? Mockingly? Her tone is hard to read, and unlike him her eyes stay the same. Curious, intrigued, but now slightly wary. Even though he sidestepped the question, she pressed it.
"As for why I'm looking for a Shimizu it ought to be obvious. I want to ask if you've mummified or seen someone mummified by your clan. If you can control the blood of others I imagine it's possible." Despite the morbid nature of the question, she asks it as if she raised her hand politely in the classroom. He did ask, after all.
Kiji listened coldly as she spoke about his eyes. Yes, yes, he'd been told that his eyes could make his life harder before. He hadn't honestly cared much since he was not facing missions away from home or where he'd be needed to conceal his emotions…yet anyway. He doesn't seem to care much at the 'comforting' remark either. All he says in response is, "Most people are creeped out by my eyes." And then he promptly drops the subject, his mind far more focused on her reasons for finding a shimizu….
She explained her reasoning and Kiji's eyes brightened slowly, the yellow fading into a pale tone, almost opalescent. He tilted his head as though thinking…. "Well, why do you want to know about mummification. It's a secret technique so it can't be talked about randomly…Maybe if you have a good reason…"
Reina rubs her chin. "If it's a secret technique it's a technique your clan has," she says. She considers Kiji for a long time. Five seconds. Fifteen. Half a minute. Not as if she doesn't know what to say, but that she is measuring whether to tell him. It'd be obvious…besides mentally measuring him she's looking him up and down from ankle to knee, across his shoulders, other places as if she's fitting him for a suit.
Then, she smiles. "I'll tell ya," she says. "There's two reasons. The first is because I found a mummified body on the mainland. I believe it's either mine or yours. No other clan is capable of such complete and natural mummification. Secondly, I wandered off before I could learn how to do it. I thought that if I knew your clan could do it then it would provide a clue for how the heck I'll perform it. Well, in the far future. It'd be that much quicker if I knew how your clan did it. Can you show me?"
Kiji matched Reina's stare evenly, giving nothing away despite his color changing eyes. In fact he didn't even twitch when she looked him over. He seemed to have nerves of steel. Slowly as they stare at eachother his eyes drain entirely of color until they were an opal white, similar in appearance to the Hyuuga clan's of Konoha.
Then she spoke and Kiji listened well, his eyes fading into a very very light purple. that orange ring was still there, however. His first show of emotion was a look of suprise at her claiming to have found a mummufied body. Interesting that. There were other things of interest in her words, though. Such as 'her clan' and that she'd left 'her clan' before she learned the technique. Kiji nods slowly throughout the first reason as though he understood where she was comming from, but then he tilted his head again, a look of curiosity and interest on his face. "So.. you know what clan I am from, what clan are you from, Reina-chan?" he left the main question alone for the moment.
Those eyes. Reina looks down at her string and makes a pattern for a second. It may be out of amusement, but it may be because she finds it hard to meet them. They're a kaleidoscope of colors. When she looks back up though her gaze is steadier than ever. And she listens to his words with the same deliberation that he listened to hers. She tilts her head slightly at the end, questioning. That's not quite the question she expected right off the bat. But she answers it anyway.
"The Miira Clan," she says, using her surname. "They're not as well-known as most clans, but I'm not offended. All Miira can do is heat stuff up. It doesn't even allow me to make fire." But if someone thought about it, really thought about it, there's plenty of applications for such an ability. She doesn't dwell on that however. "I need to find if this person is from my clan. I may not be in the cool group, but I can't have someone who dries up defenseless villagers, can I? I have another question. Why do most of your shinobi wear blue sandals? It'd be easy enough like yours to wear black."
Yeah. She's weird.
Kiji kept his gaze steady but filed the information she gave on the Miira clan away for future perusal. Being able to heat things up was indeed a useful skill. His 'threat sensor' faded slightly as she continued explaining about her problem. He crossed one hand over his middle and rested the elbow of his other arm on it, tapping his chin lightly with his fingers as he contemplates her situation. "Well, I can see the reason for wanting to figure out who is responsible for such a thing… I would like to help you…. Hmmm…" He flourishes his hand, the bleeding cuts on his arm already closed and scabbed over by now. "I can tell you beyond a doubt that this was not done by anyone in my clan. As for the sandals, it's quite a simple explanation…." His eyes were suddenly quite blue with very little hint of the orange ring left. "You see despite political differences between the various hidden villages, merchants service everyone and we all just buy from the same supplier." Yes, he said that with a straight face….
Reina has long, thick strands of hair hanging loosely past her shoulders. It's a pale red like a light apple, with long bangs that sometimes obscure her eyes. Her eyes are a bright cobalt that in some lights can be white-silver. She has pale skin, as if she doesn't absorb any of the sun's light or lives somewhere shrouded in mist. She has a hint of the smile, warm but faint.
Reina sometimes wears a sturdy cloak and hood over her finery. But beyond the occassional cloak, whether in rain, snow, sun or sand, she seems dressed for high summer. She wears a high collared, sleeveless shirt that ends above her navel. Her pants are shorts. Her long, slim legs are wrapped in fishnets from shorts to her geta sandals.
Reina listens intently. Dehydration and dressing. She learned two important things today. But she's not meeting his gaze. She watches as he scabs over quickly. What a wonderful technique that would be. For one, a running, bloody nose would only last for a short time. Someone would never have to worry about popping warts or pimples. All life's little bloody annoyance would be non-existent for the Shimizu Clan. She says, "I didn't think anyone in your clan did it. But why would you think your clan didn't do it? Because they're too honorable." She smirks up at him. "And that manufacturing bit makes sense. It must be a rich shoemaker, that's for sure.
Kiji moves in a little closer to the woman, his eyes still quite blue, but darker, serious and tht orange ring has returned. He seemed to loom for a moment despite being nearly the same height as Reina. When she seemed to mock the Shimizu by asking if they are too honorable to do such a thing as mummify someone he leans down slowly so he's close to her ear and speaks in a low tone. "Be careful, Reina-chan. If you said that to my cousin he would very likely kill you…. He takes the clan seriously…." He backed up a little, only so he could lift his hand between them. He dared to hover his hand above her chest just north of where her heart beat beneathe the bone. His hand was warm as he pressed it there and a dark sort of smirk plays across his lips. "Perhaps he would explode your heart…."
When he puts his hand over her heart, Reina doesn't attack Kiji. She doesn't even slap his hand away. Instead, she smiles. "You know, I don't know much about Kirigakure. So your cousin would kill me if I talked in such a way? Thanks. You're a kind boy, Kiji-san for warning me." Despite her kind words, her tone isn't cheerful. Then, she acts without warning. She'd grab the back of his head and draw him closer to give him a crushing, passionate kiss. And pull away after a moment or two. Her eyes are glittering, and her smile is absolutely incorrigible. "Boys your age shouldn't be threatening strangers," she informs him. "They should be kissing girls. Let's meet again, Kiji-san." Then she'd step back and flicker away, leaving the red string behind.
Reina looks closely at Kiji to see his reaction. However, her amused expression slips when she sees his expression. It’s not that her kiss didn’t affect him because he’s been kissed a lot. It’s as if he doesn’t know what a kiss is. From the look of it he’s actually considered the kiss’s combat potential. She does suppose that a kiss might be a clever way to introduce poison, depending on the poison and the target. Reina will have to keep that in mind…
She scratches her head, pondering that. She files it away to be studied later. In the meantime, he asks her why she knows so much and so little about her clan. She says, “I know plenty. But there’s much I don’t know about it.” She steps back from further kissing range, for the time being. “So is there anything you want to tell me about it? Stuff you’re proud of, stuff you wouldn’t mind I know? I wouldn’t mind learning more than there is to know from a dumpling seller.”
Kiji took in Reina's words and smirked a little, folding his arms, his eyes a pastel kind of blue. "So you just know we control blood…. And you shouldn't listen to dumpling sellers… They're pretty usually full of legends and myths." He backs up a pace himself and lifts his right hand, palm towards himself, to show her a nasty looking ring. It's metal with no jewel and is quite sharp. He then fists his hand and jams the ring against his left arm, drawing a line of crimson down his forearm parallel to the marks that had already sealed themselves. It takes just a second for the blood to start flowing and he focuses his chakra within the blood, forming a kind of crimson mist around the wound. Then he lifts his right hand and motions in the air. The mist follows where he directs… and then with a snap of his wrist, the blood forms into dozens of crimson senbon, heading right for the tree Reina had been in, neatly severing a small limb from the tree. He looked at her with those blue eyes, curious of her reaction to the simple attack.
She’s watching. She’s watching very closely as he performs this technique. She frowns at the amount of blood he’d drawn. That’s enough to make a normal person feel lightheaded from blood loss. Maybe they have some ability to generate more blood than the average person? Or maybe that’s less blood than it seems, as compared to the chakra infused in it. She’s rubbing her chin again as she studies the technique. Reina doesn’t look disgusted or scared. She looks confused.
When they spear the tree though, she gives a clap of delight. “Excellent,” she says. “A truly wonderful technique, where you can utilize your source material from any number of places.” Then she’d go over to the tree where the blood has splattered, run a finger through one of the stains, and lick it. Like licking frosting off. Then, she’d spit it out. “Doesn’t taste any different from other blood,” she notes. “Tell me, does your clan use blood for anything besides healing or combat?”
Ishino casually strolls through the area, pausing as he'd watch the interesting trick of Kiji. Blood. Well. They came in all types, right? He'd cross his arms over his chest, musing as he'd contemplate Kiji and Reina. Hmm.. must be a new graduate. He'll have to check the paperwork again, to be sure. "How often are you able to do that, before it effects your blood system?"
Kiji narrowed his eyes when she touched his blood, tastes it even… She was a strange one. "You should not take a blood wielder so lightly… I could pierce your finger with just that drop left behind." He meant the warning in a more friendly way than earlier. He shakes his head then looks like he was about to speak when she asks her question. His answer is simple and slightly defensive. "/I/ do not use it for anything but healing and combat…" When Ishino walks up the path Kiji lowers his arm and steps back, offering ishino a bow, for though he had not formally met the man before, he knew him to be one of the Seven. He aanswers with a shrug and faintly blue eyes. "At leaast two dozen times."
When the newcomer approaches, Reina's full attention turns to him. He's dangerous. And like most of the dangerous people in Kiri he doesn't try to hide it…couldn't really, since he stands about a foot above everyone else, including her. But her attention is only on him for a short time, as she turns back to listen to Kiji. Jeez, the Shimizu seems a lot more willing to divulge information to tall-and-shadowy than to her. Does Reina actually look…sullen? Just for a second.
"Really? I could think of a hundred applications for that kind of ability," Reina says pleasantly. "I don't take you lightly one bit. I just assume that if you do cut off my finger or tongue…then that's that. And I'll have learned one new thing in the process." She smiles, and her smile and gleaming eyes are like a sly cat. "I'm always trying to learn new things. Such as your name." She turns to Ishino. "I'm Miira Reina."
Ishino looked on in interest. An easy smile with a sweeping western bow given towards Reina at her introduction. "Please, let me introduce myself then. Doihara Ishino. Jounin of Kirigakure, genjutsuist and one of the seven swordmen." He'd straighten up with that light nod. "Miira. They are the ones with advanced control over heat, yes? A very useful tool, especially in a place such as Kirigakure." Looking between Reina and Kiji, he'd ponder for a moment. "Do you think you might be able to dry out the blood before he could consuladate it?"
Kiji looked entirely oblivious to Reina's pouting, but he does tilt his head curiously, his eyes shading into a brighter blue. He shook his head in amazement at Reina's answer that if he hurt her she'd have learned a lesson. "If you go about life that way a Jounin is going to accidently kill you…" Or maybe not so accidently.. he pondered the image of Reina kissing Ishino for a moment, wondering what the swordsman would do in such a situation…. Ishino's voice, directed at Reina, breaks through his thoughts though and when he asks her if she could dry the blood out before he form it. He looks at Reina curiously, eyes shading lightly into purple….
Reina's eyes scan over Ishino to see if he's joking. From Kiji's reaction it seems he's telling the truth. She's heard they're strong. Reina settles with a shrug of all things, as if at a loss for how to react…maybe salute or something? However, she does look impressed when he sums up her clan in a sentence. "That's right," she says. And since he got it, she gives a demonstration. The moist earth beneath her feet suddenly grows hard and cracked, and a nearby weed shrivels up. Nothing imposing, just interesting.
When Kiji warns her about the whole killing thing again, Reina actually smiles. "Why does everyone tell me that?" she wonders. "If I had a coin every time someone said that, I'd own a castle. And I could eat dumplings every day."
Ishino chuckles softly. "you get use to it." He'd muse as he watched how Reina was able to effect her surroundings. Interesting. Very interesting. He'd give a small nod in agreement. "Jounin could kill you, if you push too much. That's a valid answer. I know that if you were my student and late, I would punish you for it." Ishino shrugs then. "Both of you have facinating capabilities. Quite facinating. I'll definitely enjoy studying you both as you develop."
Kiji folded his arms, ignoring the blood still flowing from his cut, slowly accumulating around the wound and above it, prepared for use should Ishino tell him to do so. He watched her dry up the ground beneathe her and kill the weed with a curiosity that turns his eyes a bright purple. She was quite interesting…. Her ability would be one to be wary of in the future…. "I see how you thought your clan might be responsible for that body you found. Advanced use of that technique could possibly do what you described…. But I tell you again. my clan is not responsible." He pauses a moment then simply explains, "We cannot control the blood of others." So his earlier threat of an exploded heart was all an act.
Reina looks measuringly at Ishino when he talks about late students. "I believe you," she admits. "I'm actually not part of this village though. And your pitch doesn't make me want to join your class." She adds that last bit with a little irony in her voice. When he compliments their abilities, Reina says, "I heard you Seven have unique swordsmanship that Kumo swordsmen can't compare to, in variation. One-of-a-kind swords different as night and day."
Kiji earns a raised eyebrow, and a skeptical look. "I believe you about the victim. There was no reason Kiri had a reason to kill the victims. It was far away. But I think you could control other's blood. There's a clan who can control someone's entire body. Genjutsu that can invade someone's nervous system… from a range, even. You said not to take your clan lightly, so I won't."
Ishino studies Kiji, then Reina for a moment, before finally shrugging. He'd withdraw a scroll from inside his tux, unfurling it with a *POOF* of summoning. It left behind the Hiramekarai. The blade. "We can. We do. No one can mirror what this blade can do. Even beyond that, no one can mirror what I can do with the blade." It might be noted then that Ishino wasn't holding the blade, it stood on it's own. The entire length shimmered and started to morph, more like a liquid with a hilt, than a solid blade. "As for my class, you would have to earn the privilage to be taught by me. I don't just teach anyone. Time is precious. More precious than you may ever come to acknowledge and I refuse to waste it on those whom are not worth it."
Kiji stared at the woman for a long moment then shook his head. "Women." He looked to Ishino for a bit of help on this one. He'd evidently been quite convincing earlier when he'd suggested he could blow up the woman's heart….
Reina looks at the blade for a long while. "Thank you for showing it to me," she says, and she sounds quite sincere about it. It's not everyday you get to see a sword that has near-magical powers. She wants one. She wants to reach out and grab it. But until she knows what it does, she doesn't want her hand to be vaporized or some other equally dramatic consequence that might go with it. However, her faint smile drops when he puts forth words such as 'waste of time.' She doesn't look very pleased either when Kiji shakes her head at her. It's to him she speaks.
"Kiji you're rude. When I'm rude I accept something may happen. But you've insulted me numerous times. Delivered three death threats in the five minutes I met you. You've lied." She sighs. "You say if I talk this way to them your Jounin will kill me? Well, I've spoken rudely to you." She looks to Ishino. "Are you going to champion him and attack me for my big mouth?" she asks. She doesn't look afraid at all…she's either confident or crazy, but probably just the latter.
She doesn't look afraid at all…she's either confident or crazy, but probably just the latter.
Ishino looks at Reina, raising a brow. The blade would return to him, that *POOF* and it was once more sealed into a scroll. At the same time, that need, desire, want, demand to kneel. Kneel. KNEEL. would slam into Reina. "Do not be rude. Or I will kill you. I can. It's a matter of paperwork." Ishino shakes his head slightly. "Which would be the only reason I don't. It uses too much time."
Kiji blinked several times as Reina railed at him. In his mind he tried to count how many times he'd mentioned death as a possibility for her.. hmm the false threat…the suggestion the jounin would kill her.. ah whatever. However… "I havn't lied. I just omitted the truth." When Ishino pulsed with chakra, trying to send the woman toher knees Kiji's eyes lightened into a sunset appearance, curious to see what Ishino would do next…
Reina expected an attack. But it was more along the lines of a limb flying or ear chopped off. After all, he was called one of the Seven Swordsmen. Instead she feels an overwhelming need to kneel which she can't resist. And she looks…embarrassed. Intensely. If she kneels it should be her choice, not because she's abysmal at defending against genjutsu! And Reina is just stubborn enough that she might have chosen not to kneel given the choice.
She looks up at Ishino. Right into his eyes, gauging. "I believe you," she says. She sounds…surprised. If he didn't keep her forced down or attack her, Reina would eventually stand up naturally. And she asks curiously, "Is that true? You'll truly kill me if I say something rude to you?" She doesn't even look at Kiji…she's avoiding his eye. She'd probably say something offensive to him after all.
Ishino nods once she said she believed him and that need to kneel would vanish. He didn't say anything, nor offer to assist her in standing up. "Genin are easy to replace. A short term investment at your level. A few years, there's another to take that spot." Ishino shrugs slightly. "It would truly depend on exactly how rude you were. Enough to make me act more than a casual action and yes, I would finish it. Because I'm through. You learned the lession from that, which is what the goal was. If you couldn't learn, then you aren't worth keeping alive." He'd smile lightly then. "Plus your body would aid with experiments, so it's not like the resources would be wasted." Ishino looks to Kiji. "The truth is a resource. So is lying. Don't waste resources on something minor. Save it purely for when it is most needed." Withdrawing his pocket watch from his vest, he'd click it open. "Now. I am needed to look in on something, so I don't have much time left. Is there anything else I may assist with?"
Kiji noted that the woman seemed quite irritated with him. To Ishino, though he would bow. "I merely wished to glean information on this woman's clan as I knew nothing of it but she claimed they could mummify a person. It sounded dangerous enough to learn more about so I did so in the fastest manner I could. I will keep your words in mind from now on, Doihara-sama." He looked to Reina, his tone friendly… "I know you disllike me now, but know this…. You gave up information that was possibly quite valuable and gained none in return. It was your own beliefs that allowed me to do this. Be more wary of people asking about your abilities. Many only wish to use you for them."
Reina runs a hand through her fiery hair. She smiles crookedly. "I don't think there's anyone quite like me who could take my place. At least, my friends would agree." She looks at Kiji. She says, "I know. But that's what I chose to do. Anyway… this is probably the last time I'll see either of you. I'm sorry for trespassing in your lands. This is the first time I came to Kirigakure after all." Then she bows to Ishino. "It was interesting meeting you," she says. "And you," she adds to Kiji-san. "Goodbye." And then she'd leave. From the direction she's angling it's probably towards the exit of the village.
