Summary:
A Konohagakure mission turned out to be a trap for an assassination attempt on the Amegakure asset Kurayami Rin. The attempt is made, combat ensues, and the mission ends in failure.

Drenched Plains [Land of Rain]
The Drenched Plains of the Land of Rain are composed mainly of what one might expect in a country of near-perpetual rainfall — grass and mud. There are sections of gravel, some boulders scattered around, and similar, but most of the solid terrain is grass and mud. There is nothing else. This is not to say the terrain is uniform, however. There are cliffs and ravines, streams and rivers, burgeoning lakes, muddy waterfalls of various heights and intensity, and similar. But there are no clear roads anywhere, no signs of habitations other than the occasional hut, shack, or VERY small collections of low-quality buildings that are situated more or less near each other in what one might consider a 'community'. However, they do not even qualify as hamlets, let alone towns, villages, or any other large-scale settlements.
Truly, the Drenched Plains are a dreary, sparsely populated, and heavily-rained-upon part of the Land of Rain.
To the distant north-east lies a passage through a mountain-side, via a cave network. This cave network in turn leads to the Land of Fire.

The skies are raving, broiling. They vent their anger to the world below, their tears warm and plentiful, a deluge that leaves the earth muddy and swollen. It screams it's frustrations through the winds that whip, tearing at cloth and hair wood and thatch, tossing about the small things with no anchor. It's fury flashes, lighting the clouds above with lightning — a spark across the celestial forge of steel gray. It was dark this day, nearly too dark to tell this mid-afternoon from midnight.
And pushing through it was a heavily cloaked man, a rebreather held in his mouth and a wide brimmed hat over his head. The man spared a glance back at the two ninja following behind him, checkign to see how they were faring with the Land of Rain in such a dark mood. He was their guide and informant for a mission within Amegakure, where they travelled. Plotting usurpers planning to take the village over. He grimaces, looking straight ahead through the waterfall cascading from his hat. He's sure they could have waited for another day to do this. Nobody would usurp anything in weather like this.
It was good to be back in the land of rain, even if the weather was terribly abysmal. During her tenure in Konoha, Rin felt she had gotten soft and started to underestimate the weather again. It was good to be home. She was dressed as usual, but now had a cloak cinched tightly around her body to ward off the rain, and geta on her feet to make moving in the mud and water easier. She worried about her companion, Soren, as she did not know if he was experienced with such things. Their guide, however, seemed unperturbed with the storm. It just showed the staunchness of the locals when it came to such things.
"How are you holding up?" She asks Soren, half-shouting to be heard over the wind. Hopefully he was holding up. They had a long way to go yet before they'd reach their objective, and the storm would only make it seem longer.
Soren sighed. He hated the rain. Ayame refused to stick around in it, and it made everything just so much harder to deal with. Even the earth seemed to fight against his movement as he trudged through. "I'll survive." he half yells back to Rin. He had traveled through the land of Rain before. He didn't enjoy it the first time. But the people were strong, definitely an enjoyable bunch, so Soren had decided to take a chance that todays trip wouldn't be quite so bad. Well… the weather saw fit to crush that hope right quickly.
Soren wore his heavy cloak, but nothing parituclar to help with his movement through the mud and water. It had made his trip just a slight bit more difficult, but it wasn't anything he couldn't handle. He made his way closer to Rins side. "So, how does it feel to be back in the land of Rain?" he grins.
The guide and contractor lets out a quiet grunt to himself. Rin, he'd seen, definitely knows what she's doing as far as dealing with the land's weather. A local no doubt. Or a previous one, anyway, considering he'd taken the job with Konohagakure. That explains why she was coming along. He couldn't say he knew what in The Drowned Lady's name that other one was doing here, though. He wasn't so sure the man would be too much help in case the fight was taken outside for some reason.
He turned his head, shouting over his shoulder. "We need to speed this up a little bit! We've got a little ways to go and we won't make either shelter or Amegakure at this rate!" That said, his steps begin to pick up, the man's stride still small to avoid slipping.
"It's really nice to be back… though a nicer home-coming from the weather would have be great." Rin looks down to the ground and the water rushing beneath her feet and across the path they were walking on. "I did miss the rain though. Not enough in Konoha for my liking." Rin looks up towards the sky, the rain falling on her face and down the front of her cloak, getting her slightly wet before she looks back towards the guide. "It's not wise to rush in this sort of weather. Sloppy mistakes can get people killed. Last thing we need is for someone to get stuck in the mud."
Soren grins a bit, and nods. "Ahah! Good to hear! Well, enjoy it! Enjoy it enough for the both of us! Please do!" he says, his joking demeanor bleeding through, despite the obvious discomfort the weather was providing. "She's right you know. Relax. I know it's your job to guide us, but it's better to arrive late, than not to arrive at all." he says, picking up his pace a bit, using a bit of water walking to actually help him pick up his pace just a tad, to better keep up with the other two.
The guide and contractor scowls as he simply trudges on, muttering under his breath. "The nerve of these ninja. Thinking to tell me, -me-, who's lived in this land since the day my da rolled off of my mum, how to travel in the rain. Like I've been the one living in kushy Konohagakure all this time. It's insulting. Pure insult, that's what it is. I swear, I have half a mind to leave them behind and let them trek on without me. See how well they do. I'd bet they—" His mumblings suddenly break off and his foot sinks into the ground. He stumbles, stops…
The sound of steel on water fills the air, abruptly, the pair of shuriken cutting through the rain on it's way towards the pair of shinobi. The guide falls over onto his side, crumpling, revealing a shuriken of his own lodged in his throat. What once was a boulder was now a man. Okumo Meruin was dashing towards them, closing the distance in his ambush. But not as himself. He was henged, eyes blue, skin tanned, with a Kumogakure headband. He bore a sword in one hand, wearing all black, form fitting clothing.

As they continued onward, Rin trudged along, wishing that Soren had prepared himself a bit better for the possible hardships of the journey. His jokes about her enjoying it were proof enough that he was too soft when it came to traversing harsh terrains. Hopefully that wasn't the case for him in actual combat. If their mission went as planned, they probably wouldn't have to worry about it, however, things always had the chance to go sour, and if the needed to fight, she hoped that he'd be ready.
However, things went bad far faster than Rin had anticipated. She was never one to wander around in relatively hostile territories, especially places like the Land of Rain where most people were ready to gut you just for looking at them funny. She had her chakra floating in the rain around them, invisibly, but at a density that would be enough to at least detect anything coming towards them that wasn't just rain. The shuriken, for example. They were barely distinguishable from the rain, but they traversed the air in a different direction, and her chakra picked up on it. Without any warning, she thrust both of her arms outward and a massive wave of chakra fired out from her body, pushing the rain away from her and catching the shuriken before it could strike her.
"Ambush!" Drenchit, they even killed the guide. Hopefully Soren wasn't so weak that something like this would kill him right away.

Has Soren mentioned he hates the rain? Well, he really does. Especially when he focused on something other than the flying death whirling at him through the rain. When Rin defends, Soren assumes she's got it. It barely occured to him that she might -not- block the blade leveled at him. But when one blade stops, and the other keeps coming, well, it's rather too late for him to dodge. So as he attempts to leap over the blade, it collides hard, with his kneecap. Luckily, the bulk of the wound deflects, and Soren's left with not too much pain, just a nasty gash.
He lands in the mud, rolling back to his feet, and immidiately focusing chakra. "Well… how rude. Couldn't you see we were just on our way to deal with you mooks? I mean honestly! Could've waited until we got somewhere dry!" he yells, still making jokes. Hopefully it would bait their enemy into giving them a moment of talking.

The Kumogakure kenjuistic henge Meruin offered no verbal reply to Rin's shouts or Soren's words. Instead, he simply brings his sword up to bare, taking the hilt in both hands. He makes a low leap as he nears, body spinning. He lashes out with his foot at Rin, sending his heel at her face before landing. Still spinning, using a mixture of water and tree walking to stay on the surface of the ground, he takes a twirling step towards Soren. He lets one hand free as he takes a swipe at the man's neck once more, the end of his spin seeing another shuriken fly from his hand and streak towards Rin. Once more the neck is the target, the easiest place to kill at with them two wearing their cloaks. He seemed to prefer to get this done swiftly.

Rin was slightly concerned, and Soren being injured by the first attack didn't do anything to belay her fears of being incapable of defeating this opponent And because of that, her fears got in the way of her next attempt at keeping herself safe and she was unable to complete her clone technique and was forced to block with her arms, crossing them across her face to absorb the impact of the attack. Thankfully, Soren managed to get between her and the follow-up attack, so she hops backwards and slams her hands together. "Alright then" The rain around her is pushed away again as two waves of Chakra surge forth from either side of her, circling around and threatening to crush the attacker.

Soren's responses were on mark this time. His right arm bashed the blade away from him, before catching the Kunai with the same hand. "Look if you've got a death wish, keep going. Please. I've been looking for a decent punching bag." he grins. He summons 3 Kunai from the hidden storage seal in the palm of his left glove, before flinging two of them randomly int the air. He twists his body, stepping in to palm the assailants face with his false hand, his other hand twitching down, yanking the chakra strings attached to the blades, to arch them down towards the attacker with one quick motion.

The assassin regains his footing after his failed assault. Quick flashes of his cerulean eyes lead him to leap skywards avoiding the grab at his face and the waves of crashing chakra that tore through the earth and rain. The kunai above him are seen streaking towards him and his eye narrow slightly, sending his own kunai to neutralize them and ricochet down towards Soren… But such a precise technique would require more practice of him, it seemed, as his own projectiles missed completely due to wind interference, letting the three embed themselves in his raised arms. He grunts…
And twists his body. Tearing them from his arm, he tosses them at Soren before landing in a crouch. His hands find his hips and he grabs something before thrusting his arms towards Rin. Twin pairs of rope lash towards her, abrasive and coarse, black and he uses them to whip her.

The assailant was undoubtedly a capable fighter, and bold, taking on two opponents without so much as a hesitation. Rin's arms were still sore from blocking the kick earlier, but there was nothing she could do about the pain right now. She had to focus. The attacker was targeting her again, this time with ropes, and not just ropes, they looked more dangerous. She didn't want those things getting anywhere near here. Again, she moved her arms, the Chakra swirling around her and condensing, hardening around the ropes and stopping them before she releases the chakra and places her hands together in a seal. A moment later, two massive blades of chakra fired out towards the Meruin, threating to bisect him.

Soren whips his right arm up to block the Kunai. He catches them with his chakra strings as they twirl away from the collision, twisting his arm, causing them to spiral in on Meruin again from all directions, summoning one final in his right palm, charging the entire limb, and blade with chakra, firing the blade with incredible force straight at Meruin. "Last chance. Flee." he yells above the rain.

Meruin watches as his attacks fail and his targets respond, each seeming intent on impaling him, eviscerating him, tearing him asunder. His eyes flash, the blue of the darkening as he simply stood his ground. The muscles in his body tense and as he flexes powerfully, an anger on his features as cold as Kumogakure's mountaintops. The chakra blades strike his flesh and tear through his black assassin's suit but break against the skin beneath. The redirected kunai thud into his side, the final one simply bouncing off. The henged assassin takes in a breath and lets out a gutteral bellow as he tears the kunai from his body and throws them to the ground, echoing over the sound of the storm, thunder, rain and all. Some of his wound vanish and his anger does the same, a focused mask fixing over his face as he brings his sword to bare…

Realizing now that Meruin's attention was not on her, and that he was busy with other things, Rin takes advantage and plucks a handful of kunai from her garments and hurls them in his direction. If nothing else, she hoped to create an opening for Soren to make a decisive blow. Perhaps it would work, and perhaps she'd actually be able to aim for once!

*Sigh* Soren's luck always got bad with the weather. But atleast he knew a bit more about his opponent now. Time to kick it up a notch or two. As Rins attacks are launched, Soren's right arm falls off.
Wait what?
Yup, the prosthetic is laying limp, in the mud now. Two quick blasts of smoke erupt from Soren's person. "Allright then! Hope you're ready for this one." he yells, before dashing out of the smoke, following right behind the flung shuriken, swinging his hand and a half segmented blade at Meruin, following up with a slash from his combat ready claw arm.

Blending in with the forest, Miyako was as still as a bush. And she looked like a bush too! Being sent as backup for Meruin, she was waiting for the right moment to attack, and she believed it was coming soon. Watching as the battle between the two ninja and Meruin go on for quite a while now, she was getting impatient. Seeing Meruins last attacks towards Soren fail, it was her time to shine. Henging into a tall light haired woman from Kumogakure, she reached over her shoulder and grabbed for her sword. "The target is the girl, get her," Miyako thinks to herself as she jumps out of her hiding place, swinging her sword twice at Rin.

Meruin not looking directly at Rin proved to be no issue in regards to the assassin defending from her attacks. He jerked to the side once. Twice. slipped his finger into the third kunai's ring and sent it sailing back. And the last? The last struck him… flying right through the cloud of smoke the clone left behind and heading straight towards Soren. The true man was already rushing towards the prosthetic man.
He lifts an arm, batting the shuriken out of the sky with his rocky flesh before moving it to block the claw arm. It sinks into the limb, bringing up blood to get washed to the mud by the rain. His eyes flash as he seems to get bulkier, strength growing further still, letting out a bullish snort from his nose. His muscles flex in a sudden, powerful pulse and thin chains abruptly sweep from underneath his clothing. Their surfaces were abraded, rough, and they made no clinking as they rushed towards Soren, a nearly abhorent number of the thin tendrils sweeping at him.

Watching all of her attacks get blocked was a bit demoralizing for Rin, but at least Soren was having some success. Then, suddenly, another group of movement in the field of chakra Rin had put up brought her attention to the person coming at her from behind. As the first sword strike came at her, it passed through Rin, as did one of Meruin's attacks. However, as the clone dissipated, Rin felt the edge of a sword cutting against her, slicing a thin line through the flesh on her lower back, offset to one side.
despite taking some damage, Rin stumbled forward and then spun quickly, firing off two attacks towards her assailant, each ripping through the rain, parting it and tearing up a furrow in the mud beneath their feet. She wasn't going to let that go so easily.

As the attack comes hurtling in at Soren, his initial gut reaction is to flee. But there's no way he's getting out of the way of it in time. So time to Cou-OHGODACIDBURNINGPOISONPAIN! The chains licked at his shoulder sending blinding spikes of pain acrossed his body as the poison seethed through. Poison! Darn it! He leaped back, two handing his sword as the segments chinked apart. "Rin… we're leaving." he says, just loud enough for her to hear, before leaping forward, twisting mid air, an insane amount of chakra surging through his arms and along the blade as it swept the landscape, both MEruin, and Miyako in the path of the strike, as the blade cut a swath of destruction through the terrain. Hopefully that would knock them off balance long enough for Rin and he to get a chance and flee.

Miyako was very fast, too fast for Rin to get a hit on her. Swinging her giant sword to the front of her body, Miyako simply stabbed her blade into the ground in front of her. Standing behind it, she could hear the -CHING CHING CHING- of the chakra blades smashing against the shining silver blade. Raising her eyebrows, she grabbed the hilt and yanked it out of the ground. "Nice try," she yelled over to Rin, "but you can't hurt me little girl." Her voice cold and emotionless she began sprinting towards Rin, just a blur in the rain as her sword swung so quickly it cut the rain drops in half. Coming from a downward angle towards her shoulder and neck, Miyako notices the man about to hit her when just as suddenly Meruin was there to take it for her. Not stopping to see what happened, Miyako kept swinging down trying to hit the petite girl.

The henged Meruin smirked for his character's sake, knowing that the chains, truly silk, would actually be somewhat soft, though he'd twined it and molded it to be as hard and abrasive as he could. But the poisons… that's where the true work came in, potent enough to create open sores where they leached through clothing and touched flesh. But then the man is skyborn, heading backwards, and his response was… unexpected and swift.
Meruin looks to the side as a smaller geiser of mud and water lifts in the air, heralding his sword's chakra slice. His smirk turns to grimace and he brings his arms before him, looking to protect himself some. It hits him and sends him flying, skidding across the mudding ground… and then his eyes open and he vanished, reappearing just above Miyako.
Wind swirled around him, throwing the torrential rains that struck him in all directions as he floated there, arms crossed. Again the chakra strike hit him and again he went flying, hitting the ground, but at least this time, his wind barrier diverted it enough to leave Miyako unharmed.
Kumogakure Meruin lets out a low growls as he seems to get just the slightest bit bulkier, his henge masking the full effects of what changes his body undertook. He sits up, making his way painfully to a crouch, ready to move should it be strictly necessary. But first, he takes the time to flood his body with the regenerative substances it holds inside, straining it, and sending it coursing through him, reducing damage at the expense of energy.
He frowns at the targets.

Miyako's attack was so unexpected that even Rin's shield of Chakra was unable to defend against it. That sword being swung that fast was unbelievable, and she barely had time to step back and slow the descent of the blade with her shield, sustaining a minor cut across her chest that bled quite badly. She'd definitely need medical attention. However, again she reelases attacks towards Miyako. "Soren, this is bad!"

Soren growls. This situation just kept going from bad to worse. If they had any more reinforcements, Rin and he weren't going to make it. "That's why…" he started, his chakra surging one last time. "-WE'RE RUNNING!" he yells, as he spirals his blade out, tearing into the landscape and kicking up as much clutter and mud as he can to cover their escape, attempting to strike their assailants one more time to ward them off, before turning, grabbing rin, and Bolting as fast as his body would allow, with the poison running through his system. Hopefully it was still faster than these two could follow. And with the distraction of the last attack, that should give them enough of a headstart to be able to escape from this little fiasco.

Running towards where Rin was, Miyako had no trouble smacking the blades of shining chakra away from her with her own blade. Determination in her henged eyes, she was getting closer and closer to the target ready to strike yet again. Out of no where, dirt and dust, mud and water was flying in every which direction getting all over Miyako including in her eyes. "Where are you," she whispered to herself as she tried to clean her face off as she scanned the area for the two nin. They were no where to be seen. "Meruin, do you see them?" she asked calmly walking over to her fellow Kiri nin, "I no longer see them."

Meruin had recovered enough to labor his way back to his feet and started towards Rin, moving swiftly but noticably slower than his initial attack. But the mud and water suddenly kicked into the air, Soren's chakra attacks rending the ground. The henged chuunin stopped, lifting a hand to protect his eyes as he took a step back to avoid stepping into the grinder. A scowl took his face and he growled to Miyako as she stepped over. But when he speaks, it's his own voice, clearer and higher pitched than his other growls and bellows would make one think. "By the time all of the detritus clears, they will be gone." He turns towards Amegakure walking in that direction. "Come," he says as the mud and the tumult finally finishes crashing to the ground. "We have failed in our mission. Let us find shelter from the storm."
