"Journey to the Land of Tea - pt. 1"
Between Konoha and the Land of Tea
Jun grins widely when he spots Katsumi coming up from Vine Street, and he waves his arms at her. "Hey Katsumi! I can't believe I beat you here!" His smirk of pride was apparent even to their Jounin sensei, who resisted the urge to roll his eyes at the boy. Though it WAS a miracle. Most days the team would be lucky if Jun was only ten minutes late.
As she made her way toward the gates of the village, Katsumi stretched her arms high above her head and let out a yawn. She had stayed up far too late, studying and training for a test that Kenta-sensei had made a mention of giving her as soon as she thought she might be ready. She was getting close. But she wasn't quite sure that she would pass, just yet. "Gomen.." she mumbled, running a thumb along the bottom of her eye to wipe the tear of strain that had found itself there. She wasn't going to make an excuse. She was here, now, and with a firm shake of her head her sea-foam eyes gave a gleam of determination. "Are we all set?"
Their sensei nodded and waved the pair of them closer so that he could brief them on their mission. "Our objective is to deliver a scroll to a representative in the Land of Tea. It is a bit of a journey, which is why I asked the pair of you to come well-equipped. I expect it will take some time to get there, but we shouldn't run into much trouble.. As far as we know, no one knows or cares about the contents of the scroll, so enemy ninja shouldn't be a problem. That being said, are you ready? We should head out while we still have plenty of daylight left."
Jun raises a thumbs-up and grins, nodding to Katsumi. "You bet, sensei! Ain't no way we'd let some thugs steal our scroll. This'll be easy!" The sensei smirks coolly, popping a scroll out of his flak jacket pocket and waving it in front of Jun's face before tossing it to him. "Great! Then you wouldn't mind looking after that for us. Unless you think you're too irresponsible for such an important task." His eyes gleamed challengingly in the Uzumaki's direction, and, just as expected, Jun took the bait.
"Who do you think you're talking to, huh? I'm not a kid anymore, sensei! Of course I'll protect the scroll, believe it!" Jun snorted heatedly and stuffed the scroll inside of his belt pouch, then crossed his arms. 'As if!' The Jounin smirked, then turned and waved the pair of Genin on. "Let's move out, then. We have a lot of ground to cover before nightfall."
A small smile tugged at the corners of Katsumi's lips, as she watched the jounin toss their ward - which seemed an ordinary scroll - to Jun for safe-keeping. Of course the guy to rise to the challenge. That was what Jun /did/, and when he was given a chalenge he didn't give up on it until he broke. And, well… She hadn't ever seen him break, yet.
With a giggle in her throat, the young kunoichi gave a skip and fell into step behind their mission leader. "Come on, Jun~" Excitement pumped through her blood with each step she took, just like with other missions she had been a part of. It felt good to be called to business. It was certainly a different tempo from her studies.
Jun files in, holding the straps of his green backpack and strolling along leisurely beside Katsumi. The way seemed clear to him for as far as he could see, and their sensei seemed relaxed, so why shouldn't Jun be? He whistles a little tune, kicking the occasional stone along the path. "So… Sensei? You said we shouldn't run into any enemy ninja. Is there anything that we /would/ run into?"
The Jounin turns his head over his shoulder to listen, seeming to take a moment to think about it. "Well, I suppose there is always the risk of bandits. Other than that, there may be some wild animals that cross our path. Nothing you two can't handle." Jun nods silently, though his imagination is reeling with the possibilities. A slow grin creeps across his face as he fantasizes about saving Katsumi from a group of thugs, and then how she would be so grateful that she might just plant him with a big kiss…
The genin listened studiously as Sensei gave a run-down of possible issues they may encounter on their journey, but none of it sparked any sense of fear. Bandits and animals were things Katsumi had grown accustomed to, in her recent months in her new rank. Granted, she didn't like the idea of having to fight. But she could, if she needed to.
With a casual glance the young girl looked to her friend and teammate, a brow lifting curiously as she observed his squinting eyes and smirking expression with a questioning look of her own. And… was he… blushing..? "Ju-kun," she said softly, trying to avoid having the jounin overhear her. "What are you thinking about..? You look weird.."
Jun's whole body stiffens when he catches the attention of Katsumi, and his whole face quickly turns red. He suddenly shakes his head violently and runs ahead of the group, pretending to have caught wind of something important rather than have to answer her question. He peers left and right, crouching and rolling and making quite a spectacle of himself, before lifting his nose to the air and sniffing like a dog. "Hmmmmmm…. I smell…. Roasted hare…." Sensei's brow raises as he watches the boy run about, but his eyes narrow when he hears mention of the smell of cooking meat. "Be quiet, then, Jun… That means someone has made camp close by. We are downwind, so if we keep to the trail, we will probably come across them… We don't know if they're friendly, so… Shut up."
As the Jounin continues on, he spies something glinting near the trees. Upon closer observation, it seems to be a broken trip wire with a bell attached. 'So, someone has been setting traps..' Rather than alert the young Genin to his discovery, the Jounin opts to keep it cool. No sense in riling the team up. They would find out soon enough if there were any ill-intentioned folk around.
'Roasted hare..?' There wasn't supposed to be anyone nearby, if memory of the area served her correctly. Had Jun accidentally found an encampment of bandits? Crouching down on her heels, Katsumi narrowed her eyes and tilted her head in a few different directions - managing to use the light from the sun through the trees at different angles to spot a few glints of silver in the surrounding area. One of which was near their sensei's feet, but that one appeared to be broken. "Jun.. Sensei," she said softly, pointing along her lines of sight to reveal an un-tripped wire near Jun's left foot, as well as a second strung between the trees next to the jounin's head. "Be careful.. Someone comes here often.." Maybe they really had found something interesting.
The Jounin's lips twitch in a sort of smirk, his eyes glancing toward the young Yamanaka. "Well done, Katsumi. Good use of Perception. Jun, I wouldn't move if I were you." Jun let out a choked sound as his foot froze right above the untripped wire, and his forehead beaded up with sweat. "U-uh…. Y-yeah…" The sensei nodded silently, and placed a finger to his lips. "Stealth, team. We are close. Let's move — carefully."
Jun gulped and nodded slowly, moving carefully over the wire and staying as quiet as he could. He couldn't see the camp yet - but the smell of roast hare was getting stronger.
They took their steps cautiously, Katsumi's eyes scanning the trees and the ground for anymore wires or gleams of silver that might cause them some trouble. However, being so focused on one sort of trap can make it easy for other ones to slip through your perception. Unbeknownst to the squad, they had passed through the barrier of a detection seal - an enemy's chakra popping in his ear before the twin tag beside him hissed into a flame.
The squad had thought they were being stealthy - that only gave the four bandits up ahead the chance to launch their attack before the shinobi team knew what was coming. The sensei was the first the sense that something was amiss. "Dodge!" he shouted, but not in time. While Jun was able to leap out of the way of the first shuriken that was thrown at him, but the second had made a sharp curve in mid-air and plunged itself into his upper arm, eliciting a sharp shout from the boy as he fell and clasped a hand over the top of the wound.
"Jun, stand up!" the Jounin barked. "Defensive positions!" The group of bandits walked up and sneered, grinning broadly at the team of ninja. "Well, if it isn't a couple of Hidden Leaf brats and their babysitter.. What are you doing out in our territory, huh? On some super top-secret mission? That's alright… We'll just take your goods and let you be on your way. We know you're busy people." The sensei smirked slightly, shaking his head. "You obviously don't know how this works. I suggest giving up while you're ahead. Unless you want to make an enemy of the Konohan army, I suggest you let us pass."
While the adults were talking, Jun was doing more than just standing still. He had already created a clone of himself which he'd sent into the trees. As long as Sensei kept them distracted, he might be able to sneak up on them…
At the sound of Sensei's voice, Katsumi ducked her head and dodged as she was told. She hadn't heard anything, but the wizz of two kunai by her ears was enough information for her to know that they were now in hostile territory. Having tucked herself behind one of the trees, the kunoichi poked her head out at the sound of Jun's shout of pain and bit her lip. He was hurt, but it didn't seem to be too bad - even if it was, she was pretty sure his adrenaline was pumping now. Her's certainly was.
'What!?' the girl shouted internally. If there was anything she hated beng called as much as "weak," it was a "brat." Even if, deep down, she knew she sort of was one. Alas, she bit her tongue and peered back to Jun with curiousness of how he was doing - only to find that the Uzumaki had already formed a clone, and was busy trying to plot a stealth maneuver. It made her grin. 'Such a smartie, sometimes…' She wanted to help him out on some way! But she needed to keep an eye out for the opportune moment to do so. Until she found it she would listen and observe, kunai in hand and chakra at the ready for her disposal.
One of the bandits noticed movement out of the corner of his eye, just as Jun's clone was passing him. "Wha—? The kid!" he shouted, causing all four of the bandits to turn around and attack the clone. "BAAAAAKA!" Jun’s clone cackled, just as the real Jun leapt into action and swept through two of the bandits with a diving swallow strike. Serves them right for turning their backs on their opponents!
Once Jun's clone was spotted, Katsumi smirked from behind the tree guarding her and quickly formed signs with her hands as she honed her eyes on a third bandit starting to turn toward her teammate. The kunoichi sent her mind out, attempting to stun the bandit with her Mind Lock ability. She felt his mental wall buckle under hers, and quickly seized the opportunity that it granted her. "Mind-Body Switch..!" she whispered forcefully, pushing her mind out once more to overwhelm her target and take command of his body. It was as easy as pie, since he had been taken off of mental balance just before.
Her body fell, then, behind its guarding tree just as Sensei swooped in the keep her from hitting her head on a rock. She was in a man, now… and she had to admit, it felt very odd! Still, the kunai in her hand felt familiar… and with a swift throw of her arm she launched an attack toward one of the bandits targeted by Jun. The only thing was, this body wasn't one she was fully prepared to compensate for - it was slow, and her target dipped below her strike without even realising what he had avoided.
Jun's dive hadn't gone exactly as planned. At the exact moment that he swooped in to cut the bandit's legs, they had turned and caught his arms, forcing him onto the ground, helplessly prone. He could only watch as one of the bandits seemed to get dazed for a moment, then turn an attack toward his teammates. 'Heh,' Jun smirked. He knew what that meant. Katsumi was on the move.
While his attackers were distracted by the attack of the comrade, Jun used the trusty escape jutsu that he had learned in the academy to wriggle out from their grasp and regain his footing. Then, with a fist full of rage and a shout to go with it, he aimed a pair of mighty punches right at those bandits' faces! "Take that, you JERKS!!!"
Meanwhile, bandit number four had seen his comrade's possession, and his face darkened. "Raiki, buddy… Snap out of it!" he yelled, as he swung a fist at the possessed bandit's face. If Katsumi wasn't careful, she would get injured, too…
Katsumi heard the bandit at her back call out to the one she possessed, glancing over her (his) shoulder to spot the fist aimed for what was currently /her/ face. On instinct she moved, pivoting around to avoid the punch and using the momentum to throw out an arm in attempts to attack her attacker with the kunai still in hand. He was quick, though, and blocked both strikes she cast at him from being lethal at all - instead all she managed was a couple deep gashes on the arms that had been used to protect.
Instead of making contact with the bandits' ugly mugs, both of them blocked his fist before they grabbed him up again, the boy writhing and kicking in their grasp. "You stupid ass holes, lemme go!" he shouted, as sensei sighed and walked forward calmly with an exasperated expression. "Very well, playtime is over, gentlemen… Now, IF you don't mind…" With that, the jounin wove together a series of seals, locking his gaze on the enemies and exposing them to his own brand of genjutsu. The bandits would feel that their limbs were made of jelly, and that they were slowly melting into the earth. The bandits gradually released their grip on Jun, and once they were all three useless lumps on the ground, sensei nodded once to Katsumi. "Let him go. He shouldn't bother us, now that his partners are in this state.”
Turning to look at their sensei, bandit eyes blinked as Katsumi felt herself internally sigh. That had been awfully easy for the jounin… and she couldn't wait until she had that sort of strength of will. Giving a nod, the kunoichi released her hold of the bandit's mind and let her own drift away; after a few moments her physical body let out a small groan as Katsumi returned to her own state of consciousness, slowly rising to her feet behind the tree that had been guarding her and stepping forward to near her mission mates with a sigh that said 'Wow… That was intense.'
Jun blinked around to the incapacitated bandits and swallowed lightly. He'd have to remind himself not to piss off their sensei. Standing up on somewhat wobbly legs, Jun walked closer to Katsumi and glanced her over slightly, clearing his throat. "Umm.. Katsumi.. Would you mind…?" He lifted up his injured arm a little. "Just bind it or something..? So it doesn't get in the way.."
At his voice saying her name, the kunoichi turned her head to Jun and laid her eyes on his injured arm for the first time since it had happened. It wasn't anything too serious, but she was going to have to make sure that it got treated to prevent infection whenever they got to their destination. "Oh.. Yeah, of course," she responded, reaching into her pouch for a basic iodine solution and letting a couple drops fall across the injury before binding the wound as securely as she could. They probably weren't going to want to stick around the area for much longer, so she felt as though she couldn't take the time she wanted to to treat him. But, alas, she still felt like she'd done a good job when she finished.
"Thanks," Jun mutters, as the sensei nods. "Well done out there, Katsumi. You executed your skills beautifully. Jun.. Try not to be so reckless and straightforward. Learn how to use deception, bluff your enemy, and keep them guessing. The reason none of your attacks were successful is because they were all so predictable." He sighed slowly, pinching the bridge of his nose a bit. ".. Alright. Let's keep going. We want to get out of bandit territory before nightfall, and then we can set up camp."
Jun grins widely when he spots Katsumi coming up from Vine Street, and he waves his arms at her. "Hey Katsumi! I can't believe I beat you here!"
