"The Road to Remembrance"

Unknown location

As I lay in the hospital bed, staring out the window, a nurse knocks on
the door. She walks in and hands me blank notebook.

"Here. Maybe if you start writing, it'll help you find yourself."

"Thank you, but I don't even know where to start."

"Just close your eyes and write about what you see."

"I'll try…"

As she walks back out of the room, I close my eyes, and visions of battle
flash through my mind. Explosions and thousands of shards of crystals,
blood and broken bones… Two beautiful faces, faces I feel I should know.
Were they important to me? What are their names?… So I must begin:

'When the war of the beasts brings about the world's end

The goddess descends from the sky

Wings of light and dark spread afar

She guides us to bliss, her gift everlasting'

As I wander the land, unfamiliar to both myself and others, I have yet
found nothing of who I am. The winds of the desert have carried all clues
away from me. All I have are these visions, the voice of the man speaking
to me in my head, and this notebook I carry with me. Nothing else is
working. If I must, I will embrace his power to find myself, find life
once more. I must not fear the darkness of the abyss I must leap into….
And so I write on.

(Prologue)
'When the war of the beasts brings about the world's end
The goddess descends from the sky
Wings of light and dark spread afar
She guides us to bliss, her gift everlasting

(Act I)
Infinite in mystery is the gift of the goddess
We seek it thus, and take it to the sky
Ripples form on the water's surface
The wandering soul knows no rest

(Act II)
There is no hate, only joy
For you are beloved by the goddess
Hero of the dawn, Healer of worlds
Dreams of the morrow hath the shattered soul
Pride is lost
Wings stripped away, the end is nigh

So, my name is Maikeru. A man from Kirigakure came and found me to bring
me home. Apparently, I've been missed. I am beginning to piece things
together now. Slowly, but surely… I am becoming whole, but who I will be
when I reach the end of this road will not be the same man they once knew.
Still, the meeting shall be joyful. Even a monster must come home, yet…
Still I must seek those who are responsible for what has been done.

(Act III)
My friend, do you fly away now?
To a world that abhors you and I?
All that awaits you is a somber morrow
No matter where the winds may blow
My friend, your desire
Is the bringer of life, the gift of the goddess
Even if the morrow is barren of promises
Nothing shall forestall my return

As I write on, I have come to realize something. From the effects of
one fateful evenings, I have become what I spent my entire life trying not
to be… But it is time I accepted what I am. There is no changing, no
turning back… I am a monster. From the moment I chose to taken control
of and embrace Jigoku's power, amnesiac or not, I chose to become a
monster. This is not all bad, though. For once, I am at peace with myself.
I have become whole, more myself than I was before the fight. Soon, Hell
will rain down on those who caused this. You could call it vengeance, but
I feel something much deeper pulling me.

Act IV
My friend, the fates are cruel
There are no dreams, no honour remains
The arrow has left the bow of the goddess
My soul, corrupted by vengeance
Hath endured torment, to find the end of the journey
In my own salvation
And your eternal slumber
Legend shall speak
Of sacrifice at world's end
The wind sails over the water's surface
Quietly, but surely

Act V
Even if the morrow is barren of promises
Nothing shall forestall my return
To become the dew that quenches the land
To spare the sands, the seas, the skies
I offer thee this silent sacrifice'

"Kaede…. Uma…. Soon you will learn that there are fates worse than
death… and then I'll come for you." I lay down my pen and close my
notebook, looking out into the night. "Even if the morrow is barren of
promises, nothing shall forestall my return."
