"The Usual Suspects - Puppetry Traps"
Land of Lightning
Yori has been assigned to Hanami for the time being. It's likely that she doesn't know the patrol routes, so the two have been told to pack for a week-long trip that could, potentially, extend longer than such. The two were to meet up at the village gates for a 'mission briefing' of sorts, as well as to see just who their 'chaperone' would be. Genin were, after all, still forced to travel with someone who was a rank or more higher than them. At the gates was Unnamed Chuunin, waiting patiently for the two to show up.
Yori is packed and prepared to go on the trip. Thank god spring is well under way otherwise this could be a very cold trip. Instead it just might be mildly unpleasant at night. The young Saito comes out of the gate and bows deeply to the Chuunin, "Saito Yorishiro." He introduces himself to Unnamed formally. "Reporting as requested."
Hanami arrives shortly after Yori, packed and ready to go. She heads over to the two and bows to Unnamed, "Shinatobe Hanami, reporting as requested."
The Chuunin nods in greeting to the two. "I'm mostly along for the ride, actually… Since you guys can't go out on your own. Saito-san, you're in charge of this, okay? You have to get us through some of the patrol trails and show Hanami-san everything." He offers a map to the Saito. "The first few trails are only a few hours long, each. Mostly filled with wilderness and the like, from what we've seen. The outer paths are more prone to bandits. And then we have the wild beasts that come in between towns that you need to watch out for." He turns his gaze to Hanami. "Make sure you remember the trails, as you'll be patrolling them as well. If you can't remember, at least be familiar."
Yori takes the map and unfurls it briefly to give it a look over and get at least the first days worth of travel in his head. It doesn't take more than a few seconds. "Thank you Chin-san. I think we'll be okay, although I'm glad to have you along." He says as he rerolls the map and puts it in his backpack. He looks back to Hanami and smiles before offering a bow. "Nice to meet you. I look forward to working with you."
Hanami nods to Chin-san, "I will sir." Then she returns Yori's smile and bows back, "Nice to meet you as well, the same. I look forward to this experience, thank you." She straightens and then makes a quick, final check of her gear. She has everything she needs, so she's good and ready to go.
As the trio sets off, they would find that much is peaceful in the world around them. Of course, this is only the beginning of the journey. Yori would be able to show Hanami some of the sites that people enjoyed hanging out, such as the Waterfalls, the Lake, and the bridge. Not in person for all of them, but certainly give a brief overview of each. Chin stays silent, letting Yori do all the work. Occasionally he would pipe in with a random tidbit or fact, but other than that, he's quiet.
And indeed, since Yori had been made aware previously of Hanami's unfamiliarity with the village and it's surroundings. He has no problem explaining where certain things are, showing what's around and, occasionally, venturing just slightly off the path to actually visit places. But one can't forget their patrol and the fact that time is a wasting as well. "How are you enjoying being in Kumogakure?" He asks after a short while.
Hanami follows along quietly for the most part. Aptly listening to what Yori has to say about the surroundings, enjoying the sites as much as she's doing her best to remember the patrol paths they walk. She blinks at Yori's question, "Oh uh, I like it. I'm still familiarizing myself with the city but it seems like a good place so far. I imagine I wont have any trouble enjoying being here and training, and helping as a shinobi. It's a bigger place than I'm use to, but it's not too bad." She smiles.
The two wouldn't notice much for the time being. As usual, everything is peaceful for the first leg of the journey. Chin decides to pipe into the conversation as well. "So, you're a new genin, Hanami-san? You liking the life, or do you find it too stressful?" he asks with a small grin. "As long as you work hard, though, you'll be fine."
"That's good." Yori nods as Hanami fills him in on how she's doing in the village. "Glad you like it. It can be kind of overwhelming at first." When Chin-san starts talking the boy falls silent and just watches around to make sure things are still going okay. Nothing surprising on the horizon…hopefully.
Hanami nods, "Thank you. Um, and yes I guess I am enjoying life. It isn't easy sometimes, but I'm trying. It helps, having a goal to work towards though. Keeps me focused I guess." She notices Yori watching around and does the same, not wanting to be unprepared or let her guard down, "But yes, I'm doing well. I walked around a good part of the village today, trying to better familiarize myself with it, to get use to it which'll help."

Chin nods lightly. "Good, good. I-" He cuts off as he notices something… Interesting. "Hmm…" he comments, looking around a bit. "Hmm… We should be a bit quieter… The animals around here…" He shakes his head a bit. "If we're unlucky, you'll see what I mean." Off the path, the two genin would probably see a large bear wandering around. It's just awoken from that winter hibernation thing, so it's scrounging about for food right now.
Yori falls silent as he notices something is a bit off as well, eyeing the surroundings warily until it finally dawns on him. Of course. When he sees the bear the boy watches it carefully before motioning for them to continue on in silence. If they're lucky maybe they won't attract the attention of the scary beary.
Her lips thin as Hanami closes her mouth tightly, giving a curt nod to the other two that she heard their advice, keeping an eye on the movements of the bear while she goes along.

The bear snuffles around in search of its food, the shinobi not catching its attention as of yet. It's a very sleepy bear if it's just passing up these tasty shinobi! The bear waddles off, eventually, apparently sniffing out some berries. Yummy, berries. Chin looks a bit relieved, not wanting to hurt the bear. "Good job, you two!" he says with a small nod. "Right, so… Yori, where to, now?"
Yori watches the bear and waits for it to wander far enough off that they won't catch it's attention by talking. "Alright, from here we're going to head out towards the border, according to the map." He says, recalling from memory. Of course it's really not a dangerous part of the border, one more used by merchants and travelers, but that was probably a good thing for now. "We ready?"
Hanami watches the bear move along herself, exhaling quietly. Though she didn't necessarily fear the bear's wrath, of course, it still would've been a bother if it had attacked. She starts a bit at Yori's question, "Oh, yes. Yes, ready to continue."
Chin nods lightly and wanders along, guiding the two genin while also nudging Yori to the front and center. This was, technically, Yori's mission, right? Chin is just here because they can't be out here without some form of supervision. The man yawns just a bit as he says, "So, looks like everything out here is pretty quiet. Good thing or bad thing, d'you two think?" he would ask, trying to lighten the atmosphere.
"You can't ever really tell whether it's good or bad this soon after a war," Yori responds without thinking, moving along the front of the small group and keeping an eye ahead as well as around them, depending on Hanami and Chin to watch their rear. "It could be quiet because people are at peace or rebuilding. But it could be quiet because people are dead, or an ambush lies in wait." Is that the answer Chin was looking for or is Yori giving too much information? He tends to do that.
Hanami follows along, listening to Chin as she keeps an eye out around them. She's about to respond when Yori speaks up, causing her to pause and listen. She looks ahead at Yori, studying him and biting her lip. After a moment she clears her throat, "I think, so far it's a good thing. We don't want to bring on unwanted or needed trouble. Like having to deal with that bear back there, if it had decided to attack. All just for the sake of a little excitement," she takes a breath, "But Yori's words were true in a sense as well, and I guess something that should at least be considered. There's the quiet of a peaceful journey, and then there's the silence that can herald an attack, like if the animals suddenly get really quiet. That sort of thing. It's important to consider as well." She smiles a little, "But it does seem like a nice patrol so far, being the normal quiet. What do you think Chin?"
Chin admittedly wasn't expecting a lesson to come out of this conversation. But he rolls with it! "Uhhh, yeah… You both put up a good point. Or five." He nods. "Anyway, you're both right. Just remember that you always need to be aware of your surroundings." Um… So, then. Right now, I want you both to do a quick scout up ahead. Yori, you take the left path. Hanami, you take the right. If you see anything odd or something of note, call out. If you can't call out… Uhh… Well, I imagine you guys can take care of yourselves until I come to help."
Yori nods a bit as he listens to what Hanami has to say, seeming in agreement with her words though he doesn't say anything further on it for now. Instead he keeps his focus on their surroundings and only pauses once they reach the intersection. When the chuunin gives his instructions the boy turns to nod, then looks to Hanami and smiles. "Be safe Hanami-san." He offers before turning to head down the assigned path.
Hanami doesn't say much else after that, wanting to keep attention to the area around her as they come up to the intersection. She gives Chin a small nod at his instructions, then smiles lightly back at Yori, "Yes, you too Yori. Be safe." Before she slips off down the right path.
Yori would find nothing of interest. A fallen tree from a storm, a few paw prints from a bear. But other than that, it was quite boring. If Hanami is perceptive enough, then she would notice a few things on her path. There was a broken shoe that was chewed up, an already sprung bear trap, lots of blood, and a few trip lines set up. Apparently someone had gone bear hunting and forgot to take everything down…
Hanami takes her time going along her path. Wanting to make sure she keeps a sharp eye out. When she notices the chewed up, broken shoe she pauses to study it. With the shoe spotting she finds the sprung bear trap and the blood. She looks about, as if to see if anything stands out around the area given the signs of someone being through here and severely injured. Or else maybe an injured animal, that too could be the case. She debates about leaving the bear trap, moving forward a bit she nearly misses the first trip line. Smacking her head for being careless she takes her time to discover the rest of them. Since she doesn't have much experience in disarming such things, aside from just cutting the string, she decides it'd be best to return and get Chin or Yori. Better to at least have then around even if all that's done is cutting the strings. So with that she gets up and quickly returns to Chin. She pauses before explaining, "I found a sprung bear trap, and lots of blood including a chewed up, broken shoe. But there were also a couple trip lines still set up along the path. I wasn't sure that I should just cut the lines, so I figured I'd return to you. Hope that's okay?" She looks a little nervous, unsure if her action gave her the appearance of being incapable of handling the situation or not.
Chin's eyes narrow a bit. "Hmmm… Alright. Go grab Jiro, and I'll go check it out. Meet back here in five minutes." The Chuunin makes his way towards the path, looking around with a practiced eye and just considering everything. The man also stores a bit of chakra up, unsure if there's something bad around…
Yori has started making his way back along the trail after finding nothing of real interest part of the way down. Not having heard any excited cries or shouts of pain or fear he doesn't exactly hasten back but takes it at a normal pace that allows him to watch around and also continue to look for anything out of place. He spots Hanami just after Chin leaves and blinks. "Is everything okay Hanami-san?"
Hanami nods to Chin as he takes off, turning down the trail Yori went just as he comes into view. "Oh, Yori! Good, didn't have to go find you. I found some trip wires along the path along with a sprung bear trap and blood. Anyways, I came back to tell Chin and he said he'd go on ahead and meet him back here in a few minutes after going to get you. So should we wait, or just go catch up with Chin do you think?"
"Traps?" Yori says, hmming softly to himself. Tripwires, traps and blood. He's not sure he likes the sound of all that. "We should go in case something has happened where he can't return. I'd rather not wait. Just be prepared and watchful." He tells the other Genin before leading the way down the path the way that Hanami had originally gone, and Chin was now going.
Hanami nods, "Right, I'm glad you said so I didn't want to leave him alone, though I'm sure he can handle himself but…you know." She shrugs and takes off after Yori quickly, keeping her senses alert and ready to act in case there is trouble.
As Yori and Hanami move along, they would find that the forest suddenly had a lot more traps than they thought. One in particular sent kunai flying at both of their heads! In the meantime…. Chin is poking around some bushes while he explores, though no traps have sprung up on him yet. Somehow the Chuunin has all the luck!

Yori is trying to be careful as they walk down the path but when the traps go off that all goes out the door. Instead Yori is simply moving, the elongated sleeves of his shirt sliding back to reveal the metal armguards underneath. One raises to deflect the kunai coming at him while the other arm goes up to deflect the kunai that was aiming more towards Hanami. Good thing she stayed close. Once that's done he looks back at her with a small, if grim, smile. "That trap wasn't meant for an animal so we really have to be careful now."
Hanami saw the kunai and was shifting to move when Yori moved in and deftly deflected it. She returns his grim smile, nodding, "Right. And we need to rejoin Chin as soon as possible." She sticks close to Yori, keeping an eye out behind them. She keeps her hands free and ready to act, taking a deep breath and trying to stay light on her feet to dodge any more traps at a moment's notice.
Watch your step, everyone. Everything is a trap~. Hanami gets to deal with more shuriken aimed at her head while Yori has to jump to avoid the things going for his legs… Or he can just move out of the way. Or crouch. Regardless… The two just have a lot of traps surrounding them. It's almost like someone is weaving it as they move, trying to drive them into a certain spot…

Yori hops back a few feet when something starts going for his legs and the boy frowns deeply. Something is very wrong here. Why hadn't these traps been trigged by Hanami before, or by Chin on his way by? And how were they just appearing? Surely the two genin aren't /that/ blind. The hop takes him away from helping Hanami this time but it doesn't give time for Yori to gives a good look at his surroundings. "Hold." He tells Hanami after she does whatever she needs to in order to avoid her own traps. He doesn't want to move until he has a sense of what's happening.

Hanami's anticipation paid off as the shurikens came whizzing for her head she twists and slides out of the way like the breeze. Eyes sharp for anything more she eyes Yori and nods, "Right." She was starting to worry herself, mirroring Yori's thoughts about how there could be all these traps now but not before. Or at least they hadn't sprung before, which meant maybe they weren't just traps but attacks from hidden enemies. She speaks quietly, "Yori, I may be inexperienced but I should've at least tripped some of them or seen them. What if we aren't tripping traps, but if there're enemies out there they're watching and attacking? Waiting till all of us were on this path at the same time?" She gives her head a brief shake, feeling unsure about what she said and just keeps her focus around them.
Yori would notice a man in the trees, perhaps. But not much else. Of course, Chin comes up and attacks the man, which would make him a lot more noticeable. "You two! Help me gang up on this guy!" he instructs. "It's just him here, so we can take care of him. But he's also kinda strong. I think he knows how to use Kugutsu style jutsu (puppeteer) too." Chin makes a handseal, which results in lightning appearing around his body. "First Field Test, okay, Hanami? Just stay behind us for a bit and don't panic. Get a hit in when you can."
Yori sees the man and prepares to move towards him, motioning to Hanami to point him out quickly - but then Chin is just all up in the dudes business. At least the chuunin is still alive. "Be careful Hanami-san. If he really can use puppets he could have many other traps hidden." With that he launches himself forward quickly, hands forming into fists and pulling metal over his knuckls before he gives him a quick one two punch in the air.

Hanami nods quickly, focused on the man in the tree so she doesn't say anything. The puppeteer wasn't thinking that genin would join in the fight! Yori gets in a good strike before he gets blocked by the man's puppet, which opens its mouth to reveal a poisonous kunai flying in Yori's direction! Two, actually, because fortune sucks. Hanami's kunai are also blocked easily by the puppet while the puppeteer focuses his energy on fighting against Chin with a different puppet, who is doing surprisingly well against this guy. Either Chin is actually capable or the enemy is… really terrible. Either way! Hanami is perceptive enough likely to notice that there are strings all around the group. In fact, those two kunai she threw happened to hit the strands, which meant… more activated traps… Hannah gets to dodge two more poisoned kunai.

Hanami frowns as her kunai miss, but blinks when she notices the strings all around them. Before she can open her mouth though two kunai are shooting right for her. She gathers the wind around her, shifting with a blur out of the way followed by another dash out of the path of the second kunai. "Guys, careful. The whole area is trapped." More kunai drawn, wind laced and whipping through the air at the puppeteer.

Yori's hit knocks the puppet's arm into a sort of jumble, and Hanami's well-thrown kunai ends up getting stuck in its joint for a moment, rending the hand itself rather useless. The puppeteer continues to have his puppets face off against Chin, but he's starting to realize that he is, technically, outnumbered. The only reason he's not dead is likely due to his ability to use two puppets. The man grumbles a bit, and he takes off. Those looking around carefully would notice that the various trigger strings are all disappearing as the puppeteer tries to escape.
Of course, that doesn't mean that they can just stop fighting! Nope! The puppeteer wants to give them something to remember him by, after all. With a flick of a few fingers, kunai get sent once again at the trio, one of them slicing Chin's arm.

She eyes the man and inhales but when Yori flickers ahead of her to hit him she lets out the breath and channels the chakra into a couple more kunai, aiming for the legs. The puppeteer almost- NOPE! Yori makes sure to knock the man backwards, and Hanami ensures that he won't be running away. "Good job, you two," Chin compliments, seeming pretty proud of the two despite not knowing them until today. "Now, let's just see who this guy is…" Chin walks over to tie the puppeteer up and knock him in the head.
Yori lands with a slight wince as the poison continues to coarse through him. Not cool. But first things first. He goes to check on the others before worrying about himself. "Are you okay Hanami-san? Chin-san?" He looks them both over carefully, a hint of worry tinging his tone.
Hanami sighs with relief as Chin ties up the man. And can't help feel pretty good at having helped stopped him, even a little. She comes over, nodding to Yori, "I'm good. The wind was with me, not even a scratch. Unlike you." She frowns at the cut on Yori's shoulder, "You should get that looked at, we're fine. You're the one hurt."
Chin nods lightly. "Yeah, I'm fine. Here, though." The man finds a pill and offers one each to Hanami and Yori. "Eat this. It'll get the poison out faster, if you got cut. And eat it even if you didn't get cut. I don't want to take chances." The man waits for them to take it and then stands up, popping the pill into his mouth and swallowing. "Alright… A village is up ahead. We'll take a break there and then get a cart to transport this guy."
COMBAT: Yori heals Yori for 225 with FIRST AID.
Yori seems relieved the others are alright and he nods slightly before turning back to Chin and taking the pill with a nod of thanks. After consuming said pill he takes a moment to pull out some gauze and wrap his two cuts, just to keep them from bleeding more for now. Once that's done he stands and nods. "I'm ready Chin-san."
Hanami nods, "Thank you." She pops the pill, swinging her arms forward and back a couple times and smiles, "I'm ready to go whenever, sounds like a good idea to me."
Chin nods lightly and hefts the captured puppeteer onto his shoulders. "Alright. Let's move out, team." The man sets off at a jog towards the nearest village, his pace making it take about 10 minutes to get there. When they do, the village elder seems to greet them with distrust and scorn once he sees the shinobi headbands. But he does let them in grudgingly, allowing them to take a cart should they so desire. "In the morning," Chin says. "We won't make it back to Kumo in time. Thank you, though, for the hospitality."
Yori follows after, of course, and bows to the village elder when they arrive. And of course he pays their way, and for the cart as well because that's just what he does. "Thank you ojii-sama. I'm very grateful."
Hanami brings up the rear as they make their way to the village. She's a bit curious at the looks they get, but doesn't say a thing just politely bows and thanks the village elder for his generosity.
