"Traffic"

Upon the river, Land of Rivers

This country, founded upon its array of rivers and of course the great river that bound them was one of the easiest places to traverse on the main continent of the shinobi world. However this also made it have certain points where any form of trade or even travel could be raided just like the roads. Worse yet, getting away with it was made easy by the super highway of rivers that criss-crossed through and eventually left the country. This needed to be taken care of. But more importantly, hope for change needed to be instilled once again. It was going to be tricky… as nothing but violence is how they ended up where they are now.
Hanpa, Ieyasu and Kaede were dispatched in order to make sure that pirating ships were essentially caught and their goods seized and returned to the owners. It was the first step in the campaign to show that things were changing… perhaps even returning to the one time the land was stable in recent years. And what was the best method to do this? By boat of course. A cargo vessel designed to hold much. It was both practical transportation for the reclaimed goods and bait for the would be pirates. Today, Hanpa would be at the helm. "Kaede… I know that you have certain… urges… but we must keep it to a minimum in order for this to succeed. Loot before body counts, ok?" Hanpa would ask a bit directly at the still young man. To Ieyasu… Hanpa mostly just observed to see how he would react and perform on this mission. He had spilled blood with the boy, now he had to battle in a whole different way.

Kaede walks behind Hanpa in a confident way and chuckles at the comment. "I don't care about the body count, my lord." He says, "I am only here to make sure that these guys don't run away, and learn a lesson. That is all." He says, as he pulls his cloak tighter around his body.

Ieyasu was eager for this mission, if only to prove himself, could he face shinobi on equal terms while still holding true to bushido? It wouldn't be easy, and fighting wako, who have no honor and would fight diriter than anything will be a good test. He checks that his samurai swords are sharp and clear of the scabbard and says, "Leaving witnesses would be more effective than putting their heads on pikes. Dead men tell no tales, and since we are so few, we need to build a reputation to compensate for the lack of manpower or else we will quickly end up outnumbered and outgunned."

If only Hanpa could eye Kaede with a side glance he would at those subdued statements… but he let it go as it was said, a bit amused by it. Listening to Ieyasu's take on the situation, Hanpa could do little more than agree as he'd steer the ship towards a more secluded river route. "In this case yes. Overwhelming violence is a tool. Peaceful negotiations are a tool. The pain of defeat is also a tool. As is chilvalry and compasion. And yes… even the ways of Bushido are a tool. They are the tools that allow for us to achieve the things that we desire. What we use those tools for… is where morality comes in. To lie to a starving child that they will be fed soon is no more evil than handing out the free food itself… as long as it gives them the strength to carry on." Hanpa monologued shortly before they would begin to see another vessel closing in on them from behind. Their ship was large and unwieldy, certainly not able to manuver or reverse course on this narrower river. "It is time to put your tools in to action. Let us hope you have kept them properly sharpened and maintained."

Ieyasu glances over his shoulder and says, "Is it… "All hands on deck", "Battle stations" or, "Avast ye lubbers! Swab the decks or ye be feeding the fishes by nightfall after walking the plank" He says the last drolly and with a terrible pirate accent. He gets up and pulls out a small medallion that has a ruby drop in the middle surrounded by lined inlaid in a golden cast and says, "I never showed you this, my mother gave it to me when I left her, she said it was my father's, and it took me quite awhile to understand what it means and it is my answer to you." He pauses and then continues "The ruby is meant to represent a drop of blood. It is the symbolic representation of the way of the primary edict.
"It means only one thing, and everything: cut. Once committed to fight, cut. Everything else is secondary. Cut. That is your duty, your purpose, your hunger. There is no rule more important, no commitment that overrides that one. Cut.
"The lines are a portrayal of the dance. Cut from the void, not from bewilderment. Cut the enemy as quickly and directly as possible. Cut with certainty. Cut decisively, resolutely. Cut into his strength. Flow through the gaps in his guard. Cut him. Cut him down utterly. Don't allow him a breath. Crush Him. Cut him without mercy to the depths of his spirit.
"It is the balance to life: death. It is the dance with death." He says this almost reverently and says, "Fear for me not, lord Hanpa, I am prepared."

Hanpa quite literally replied to ieyasu, "I will do no such thing." and leaves it at that. Whether he was joking or not (not), he didn't even bother emphasizing. As far as Kaede was concerned…. Hanpa was very suspicious of how cooperative he was being and ready he was to not destroy them. It was actually setting Hanpa just slightly on edge. Oh the facial expression that man was not recieving right now… Then ieyasu enlightens Hanpa to his creed, his purpose, his drive, and his vow all at once. "Very well…" Hanpa would accept his words. "But due try to cut something non lethal today." Hanpa smirked a bit. "I would assume that they are pirates given how their ships is moving. No one is that curious a neighbor to chase you down at high speed simply to say hello. Tell me… how many of them are there?" Hanpa would ask as that was one thing he could not tell with his current senses.
The boat had 5 people on it, and it wasn't very wide, but was long enough to haul off a good bit of loot if they wanted to, though at the moment it still had the days haul on it. The people seemed rather … expectant of victory as well. "Also, hide your weapons. Let us be prey for the moment. It will be easier to secure their things when they believe they are securing ours." Hanpa would advise as he kept steering and moving at the same pace, "unaware" of their company.

Kaede shrugs to Hanpa and smiles. "I can't tell either. My senses are far weaker than yours, my lord." He says, as he too turns around, pretending to either not care about their company, or not notice them either. Though, Kaede didn't have any weapons on him- from the group, he probably looked the least threatening.

And Ieyasu looked like a boy playing samurai, young enough that one might think he was either Hanpa's or Kaede son. He does move his hands away from his swords and says, "It looks like there are several people, 4 or 5 I think." He raises an eyebrow, "It seems we better move astern and prepare to be boarded."

"We will need them to board before they see me. My mask will make them anxious and perhaps even flee. Unfortunately." Hanpa mentioned as the other ship gained on them. He remained at the wheel, but didn't face any where near the direction of the other ship. "Oy! These are dangerous waters for a fat barge like yours! Why don't we help ya lighten the load eh?!" would be shouted by one of the men on the ship as the others laughed. Hanpa muttered for Ieyasu's sake. "Possible leader, keep his confidence high and the rest will follow." Hanpa kept sailing as if he didn't hear them as three of the men began to swirl roped hooks through the air. "OY!!! We are doing ya a favor here… you should really pay attention to us fine upstanding gentleman. As you can see, we have lightened the load of several ships before yours and they were able to sail this river just fine after, right boys?" he'd ask to even more laughter in chorus.

Kaede nods his head to Hanpa and clasps his hands behind his back, awaiting the pirates in his unaware make-pretend. When all the shouting happens, he takes a few steps back and shows his empty hands to the pirates, signalling that he has nothing to resist with.

Ieyasu grits his teeth and mutters back, "Must we? These scum are even worse than the bandits we took care of on the road." He then turns and says, making his voice crack a bit and says, "Please… don't hurt us… my father's deaf…" Well, it's a plausible explaination, and it SHOULD increase their confidence. Ieyasu glances at their boat and judges distances and mutters to Hanpa, "Wait a minute… I have an idea…" He turns to Kaede and says, "Can you give me a boost?" Clearly, Ieyasu wants Kaede to toss him up onto the pirate ship, a quick strike surprise attack.

"Deaf you say? Well ain't that lucky for…erm… him. You can signal to him our peaceful like position and our work to help you guys out! We'll just be a quick jiff in and out I swear. Hahaha!" The three hook wielding men would toss them on to the railings of the ship, pulling in their smaller vessel as a boarding ladder was raised to be set up along side. Hanpa kept his covered visage away from them as Ieyasu would be preparing to try to get Kaede to help him strike at the

men preemtively.

Kaede ponders Ieyasu for a moment, apparently completely careless in the face of this danger. After a moment he shrugs, "Alright, but don't blame me if you break anything." But instead of a physical boost from Kaede's frail looking body, instead, the man performed a few handseals; It takes a moment, but from the moisture in the air, a dragon crystallizes underneath Ieyasu and launches itself towards the pirates' ship, with Ieyasu on the back of it. It was a pretty hardcore boost.

Ieyasu cracks his voice and makes it trembly a bit and says, "Ok… just a moment… If you throw us a rope I'll get our manservent to tie it to ours so that you can board us…" Just as he feels Kaede sending him flying to the offending ship, he narrows his eyes and as he lands, uses Iaido to do a couple quick draw strikes, one on the talker with his katana, the other on the man closest to him with his wakazashi and hisses, "LIKE GRIDLOCK! And thus.. with majestic crystal dragon in air… blades draw and cutting through the opportunistic one, and Hanpa's gleaming "face" now focused upon what is happening, he cannot do anything but sigh. "It was such a peaceful trip…" he'd murmur a bit. The second crewman that was attacked quite literally tripped over a bench seat, barely saving his life with pure luck as he ran away just as the other tried to do an instant before he was cut down. There was one guy remaining with the loot, and he was not blowing a shrill whistle yelling "SHINOBI! SHINOBI!" at the top of his lungs. Hanpa would rub the back of his neck a bit at that. "Kaede… do your thing. But leave one alive or we won't be able to find the other loot they have taken and they will go in to hiding. I will stay on the boat as I know what is going to come next. Ieyasu! Get finished with that skiff quickly and get that loot in to the cargo hold /before/ you assist either me or Kaede. We can't let this venture be a waste of time." The other three men who had hooked on to the cargo ship made their way across swiftly, armed and ready to fight now as they charged towards Hanpa, trying to take control of the steering of the ship. However, before they stepped foot near the helm, Hanpa swept low with the gleam of his swiftly drawn blade, cutting their feet free from their bodies as his momentum also carried a heavy swirling round kick to smash their skulls in to each other. Raising his mask slightly, he would spew just enough fire to blacken their stumps and cauterize their wounds… thought they still may not survive.

THIS MISSION HAS NOW BEEN ESCALATED TO A C RANK

Kaede looks towards Hanpa and ponders his instructions. After a moment, once again, he nods his head and says, "I will try my best." He looks towards Ieyasu landing, and the Dragon still sailing overhead. But surely, if there was somone on board that ship, that knew Ninjutsu or anything about it, there are a few things that can be safely assumed. Kaede is a ninjutsuist, and he has to focus his chakra to continue doing his thing. One of those assumptions was wrong— but, with most of the pirates taken care of, on that ship at least, Kaede ponders his options and then presses his hands together, focusing a minute amount of chakra.

COMBAT: Kaede finishes his turn.
COMBAT: It is now Ieyasu's turn.

Ieyasu grabs the one who tripped and tosses him overboard onto Hanpa's ship and says, "MAN OVERBOARD!" Yes, he's getting quite into the whole nautical thing. Acknowledging Hanpa, he rushes for cargo hold and mutters, "Why am I the one having to get the loot? Is this truly bushido?" Even with his misgivings, he starts grabbing bags of loot and tossing them onto their boat and as he looks up he shouts, "SHIP AHOY!" as he sees another pirate ship in the distance.

COMBAT: Ieyasu finishes his turn.
COMBAT: It is now Hanpa's turn.

A dozen or so would start rushing up on each side of the ship from the land, preparing their ranged weapons, primarily bottles of booze with rags in them, but also a few other means like explosive tags were made ready as they formed up along the coast line of the river. And that is what Hanpa expected. They controlled these river routes for a reason, and the ship was an easy target to fire based attacks. The new ship that was arriving was much bigger than the skiff and seemed to have a good sized crew of about 20 men strong on it, as well as a forward facing canon. It wasn't a massive ship, more like a patrol frigate in anything resembling a navy, but this was river combat where you generally didn't even have arms on vessels at all and where broad siding was a rare occurance so most ships wouldn't be protected well in the first place. Compared to the majority of ships on these rivers, this thing was a top of the line assault craft. And right now, it was blocking their way forward. Hanpa would focus his chakra now, deciding that being wasteful was better than being unprepared. The ship needed to be protected at all costs.

COMBAT: Hanpa finishes his turn.
COMBAT: It is now Kaede's turn.

Kaede pondered the ship in front of them. It sure was nice. But like all ships, they have weaknesses. One of them is flooding. Idly, Kaede pondered whether the ship had bulkheads and compartments. Probably not, but it didn't matter. His move was not focused on damaging the ship."Shake and bake?" He asked, glancing to Hanpa, as with his hand he pointed his finger out, and swished across; The dragon, already falling apart, turned sharply and launched back towards the assault craft.Kaede exhaled sharply and uttered: "Breaking the Clouds."The crystal dragon suddenly draws into itself, as if becoming denser and smaller, but the following backwards counter motion expands the crystal far larger than it was before, spawning spears and spikes in all directions that launch themselves along with small pieces of shrapnel flying everywhere and with supreme lethality.

Ieyasu finishes dumping the loot from the boat to Hanpa's skiff and then glancing up at the assault gunboat approaching and the two groups facing them on the shores of the river, Ieyasu makes a decision and cutting open a keg of gunpowder, makes a long fuse to the powder room and grabbing a lantern, tosses it down onto the powder, setting it ablaze as he jumps to one side of the shore, crying out, "Surrender or die in obscurity!" He then zips through the pirates, slashing and he misses the first group, kills one in the second, and kills all three with the third. Just as he finishes, the powder keg explodes, sending ship debris towards the other group of pirates on the opposite shore as the ship sinks, hopefully distracting them enough to keep them out of the fight until Ieyasu can finish with these cretins.

As the shower of crystal shards rained upon the other boat, it seemed that a very large sphere of water encompassed the ship at the last moment. Several shards made it through the orb of water, but lost all momentum and power during the penetration, clattering along the deck of the ship. "FIRE" was heard roared from the other ship by a female voice as the canon was shot and a large wave would suddenly rise to attempt to capsize the boat they were on right after.
During all of this, Hanpa found that the crewman left over from the thieving vessel had snuck up and was trying to gain control of the steering wheel. Though he would quickly find himself on his knees and knocked out cold by a vicious kick to the temple. "Kaede." Hanpa would say calmly, making sure he was paying attention to the captain's rebuttal to his assault. Just then an explosion would be heard from one side of the ship, startling the group on that side and making them draw back to keep their flammables out of reach while on the other shore the clashes of battle had begin. Several men drew and slashed their swords at Ieyasu, some sending in kicks or punches, but largely they dropped their fire producing arms in order to focus in on him. Hanpa focused on slowing the ship to buy Kaede an extra second or two to respond, Hanpa's own defenses not being good for this and his long range attacks not being useful quite yet.

There was a ninjutsuist on board that assault craft. Hanpa would probably be fine with that guy dead, or at least, so Kaede thought. The cannon shot digs into a wall made of earth, and then the wall crystallizes and expands, but it cannot deflect the tidal wave- at the very least, their ship is not sunk by it.Kaede is slightly hurt, but still, he seems eager. He walks forwards, to the edge of the ship, performing handseals, eyes narrowed. "You should have surrendered." He says, "Foolish one."He claps his hands together, and the crystal wall blows apart into a thin mist that turns madder red still and envelops the opposing ship. With a final handseal, the mist coalesces into spears in spiral formations, intent on piercing the ship and every occupant within it, and hold them still.

Water cascades over the ship as the crystal dam quite literally bursts and is over run by the wave. The ship bobs up and down, turnings heavily to one side before it evens out, luckily not capsizing as the pirates planned. Hanpa kept a steady hand o nthe wheel, though he also sent a kunai to snag the clothing of the knocked out shipmate they captured. Kaede's jutsu conversation heated up however as he would send crystal particulates in to action, essentially nullifying the effect of the water barrier by implanting themselves within it before they suddenly would coelece together in to spikes from every angle. The water barrier may have even helped seal the fate of the crew as all it did was help it to surround and distrubute around the ship more evenly. "Impressive." Hanpa stated as he'd step down from the helm and move towards the port side of the ship.
In the mean time, crimson would paint the young warrior quite thoroughly in many varieties… spatter, splatter, mist, streaks, and just plain gore. He'd tear everyone that was left alive a new one quite literally and be left with a few cuts to tend to later for his time. Hanpa would hear the crackling of the fire and the panic of those on the shore line trying to get it under control. The sound of canons being dropped and abandoned, of bottles clanking together as people tried to stamp out the fires. Hanpa however decided to help it along. A single seal would be used to conjure the winds of the area and direct it towards the flames… and the explosives near by. Some of them actually had the bright idea to try to get water as the wind picked up… but it was too late. A series of explosions would begin to sound and light up the area as half of the shore bound crew would be set on fire or simply blown up in the chaos of the counter attack. "I assume that you are still in one piece, Ieyasu?" Hanpa would question calmly as the flames roared on the other side of the ship. The few remaining survivors trying to pick themselves up.

RP: Hanpa uses WIND-MANIPULATION.

COMBAT: It is now Kaede's turn.

Kaede watches with keen eyes as the crystals implant themselves everywhere, trapping everyone inside it appeared. Capt'n Kraken maybe really should have surrendered. And with these many crystals? The following jutsu would no doubt be extremely effective. A thought crosses Kaede's mind for a moment though; Maybe they could keep their ship. But it was quickly dismissed as he performed a single handseal. The crystals exploded into deadly shrapnel from outside and within the ship. Kaede already turned around, striking the assault craft as a threat from his mind, and turned his attention to the other side, to see if he can help out there.

COMBAT: Kaede attacks target 1 with BREAKING-THE-CLOUDS with a roll of: 34

Ieyasu simply moves aside once the explosion happens and calls out loud enough so that he can be heard by the survivors of the explosion and those on the boat, "Yes… I'm fine, give me a moment and I'll take care of the survivors, we only need one after all… Now might be an excellent time for SURRENDER!" He shouts as he leaps across the narrow banks, using the wreckage of the ship as a jumping off point and landing in front of a pirate and placing the point of his very bloody sword at the man's neck, and calmly continues in a conversational tone, "Or die… you have 5 seconds to make up your mind before I cut you… what say you… scum?" He asks with a raised eyebrow, his blonde eyebrow a clash of color to the blood of the other pirates painting his face.

The sphere around the ship actually seems to continue to be maintained some how… though as Kaede shatters all the crystal inside in to killer fragments and shrapnel, the orb around the ship turns blood red before bursting bloodied water every where. Ieyasu would move to deliver his ultimatum personally and would find that for what ever reason, the remaining 6 were willing to cooperate. They bowed down in surrender after dropping their weapons. Hanpa would pick up the hooks on his cargo ship and toss them and their ropes down to Ieyasu. "Bind them, I'll get the ramp set up. Kaede, keep an eye on them just in case. It seems we may be able to stop the pirating after all with this many rats." he commented as he'd anchor the ship near the port side coast and prepare it for Ieyasu to walk the prisoners on to it.

Kaede nods his head slowly to Hanpa and does indeed keep an eye on the survivors who cooperate with Ieyasu. Though, what happens at the assault craft does not seem to bother Kaede at all. Not visibly at least, but who knows what goes on under the surface. "I don't think they are interested in fighting us anymore, my lord."

Ieyasu carefully watches the now surrendered pirates and wipes his sword clean on the body of one of the dead pirates and slides it back home into it's scabbard. He takes the hooks and binds the prisoners and puts them on a chain gang of sorts and marches them up the gangway and then shoves them, along with the unconscious prisoner he already got into a cargo hold, putting the loot they rescued in Hanpa's quarters and then looks up at the two and says, "Well… that went rather well, don't you think?" He didn't get hurt too badly and even though he's slightly exhausted from all the fighting, he did manage to handle this challenge very well, in his estimation at least.

"Well enough… but i need you to learn something from this, Ieyasu. We will have to interrogate these men. Some more of them may die in the end.. just so that we can track down their safe houses and other ambush points. They were guilty of theft, perhaps even worse things, but all that we are truly aware of is theft. And this theft was done in order to survive. They did not all ask for this life. Many of them may even be family men just trying to get by with what is available in this land that they can't escape. We fought 44 normal men and 1 kunoichi. Out of that, perhaps 10 will last through the night. If not… maybe 7 at most. It did not have to be this way." Hanpa stated as if showing a great deal of compassion for the men that they just wrecked.

"We will have to fight and kill many on this journey. What I want for you to learn… is the difference between wanting to fight and having to fight. The difference between desperation and malicious intent. For your path down the road of bushido… this distinction is very important. It is the very difference between a blade of righteousness and simply the blade of a murderer." Hanpa would have kept the three men that he cut the feet from under with him at the helm. He couldn't do much for their condition, but he'd rather they be monitored. "We have turned this river red with blood once before… but even that was out of necessity. Let us go home and figure out what we need to know to end this." Hanpa announced at that point their next objective.
