Due to the larger dimensions of the weapon, a kenjutsuist can use their oversized weapon as a shield or something similar to provide more protection from incoming attacks. The thickness of the sword combined with the strength of the kenjutsuist are used to fend off, withstand, or simply divert a larger variety of attacks than a normal weapon block, shielding them from harm or at least minimizing the damage that would be received.
